my hubby just got the classic flap for me from the chanel boutique in beverly hills.. he asked the SA abt the increase in price and they told him its true.. the price for the medium classic flap will be about 3k after the feb increase.. wow! lucky i got it today...
That is OUTRAGEOUS. I'm not sure if I'm ready to accept this, I guess I'll wait to hear about what other SA's say across the nation... I don't think I'd ever spend over 3k on a bag unless it was Hermes.

I'm kind of glad I've gotten most of my Chanel collection already. I'd really love at least one or two more colorful Chanel bags though. With these increases though I don't know if I can keep up. :yucky:

This is a huge pain with designer handbags in the last year and now for the years to come.

I bought my Black Pantent "Rock" at Nordstrom in Early December. It was a punch to my wallet, but well worth it. Save up and buy fast. Best to get a classic in black or a neutral tone so it will appreciate with time.

The low US dollar is driving the cost up for luxury items, which makes it easier for non-US residents, but a issue for Americans. You can thank our IDIOT prez for that!

Wow, so many conflicting dates. I just called the Bellagio boutique today to inquire about the price increase. The SA said that he hadn't heard of a Feb price increase for the classic bags and that surely they would have let the SA's know. :confused1: I guess we'll have to wait until Feb 1st.

I don't really understand this elitist attitude...just how exclusive are they trying to be? And how do they plan to increase profits by merely targeting the highest tier of upper class? As much as I love Chanel's style, these business tactics are a real turn off...not to mention the high-browed SAs.

I don't mean to sound offensive, I just wanted to vent because as a broke college student it will probably be a long long long ways before I can afford my coveted Chanel bags.

Chanel's bags are NOT exclusive as proven in this subforum and many others online. Also the retailers, gray market and online auction websites continue to expand their inventory. So much for "exclusivity." :amuse:

Ms. Chiquet has NOT reached the desired demographic she and her crack "consumer research team" aspire to in spite of the (soon-to-be 3) price increases of the past year. Sorry Chanel...the handbags are still not exclusive.

Well, I think that's the point. Chanel isn't as exclusive as they'd like it to be (still) so they are raising the prices again.

You're right...it is the point and yet Chanel is still NOT exclusive. It's a marketing mind game, albeit a brilliant one too. They'll have to raise the prices a lot higher than 3K to be "exclusive." And they will raise their prices again to see how far they can lead the customer into buying again at the frenetic pace of 2007...just to attain that "perceived exclusivity"and a false impression of wealth.

Chanel knows exactly what they're doing. They didn't spend all that money on consumer research for nought. Remember they brought in an American CEO from the Gap (she worked there for 15 years.) This "manipulative niche marketing mantra" was her brainchild along with the help of her consumer research team.

Chanel also went on record and announced to the world what they are doing so everyone would think, "I have to buy now before the next price increase, if I want to be perceived as exclusive like everyone on the planet." Oh, the irony.

well- one way to beat the system is to buy the dirty flaps on *bay for cheap, and then have them restored! even then they probably wouldn't be last year's price!!! time to start thinking outside the box if you have severe tunnel vision for Chanel! lol~~~

Isn't 2K and 3K enough $$$ for a bag???? I love Chanel bags. It is sad, but as these increases keep coming I am edged out of purchasing them new fp. I just can't bring myself to spend over 3K....

Ugh, I've been trying so hard to ignore this....if they want to be exclusive than they need to also be harder to get.....if they do go through with all of this I would LOVE to see their profits drop due to a decline in sales, even if it's just a bit, I don't care how much money people have, we are going through a tough economical time in the US and a lot of people aren't spending money on things if they don't think they are worth it. IMO a flap I could have bought a year ago for $1,500 selling for $3,000 is just not worth it to me........ I just think GREED when I hear this. Then to further put it into perspective for myself:

-small leather handbag with metal chain (not gold or sterling, just silver metal which I've seen tarnish terribly with excessive use) $3,000 VS. new professional series viking range for kitchen remodel $3,000

-same $3,000 flap VS. my H VS 2 1ct diamond and platinum anniversary band @ $2,000.

-same $3,000 handbag or a new viking stainless steel refrigerator for remodel $2,500,

I can go on and on, things do increase in price that's life, but I don't see other luxury goods increase at this rate, I just feel taken advantage of..... We are all going to have different views, I think I'll just have to focus my spending on less Chanel:sad:

Its not about affording it or not, but I just don't feel comfortable carrying a $3000+ handbag which is why I've never gotten into Hermes. Its just too easy to steal a handbag off someone's arm. I wear a Rolex, but its securely snapped onto my wrist. My most expensive bag currently is $2495, but for some reason any higher seems uncomfortable at this point in time.:girlsigh: Maybe I'll change my mind next week.

I agree with this as well, it is a little uncomfortable, right now my most expensive bags are around the 2,000 level, I'm most comfortable with the 1,000 range to be honest. If you can't wear a bag without worrying about it what's the point of owning it....I like to use and enjoy my bag not keep them in the closet. I wear a rolex too but it's not like I have a few of them to switch off like my bags, I don't need my handbags to cost the same as my rolex did.

Love your avatar bag, had my hands on that a couple weeks ago:drool:

Well said Lola24.

You are not alone in your thoughts of: being taken advantage of, Chanel's greed and that Chanel handbags are readily available.

Sadly, sales continue to skyrocket because of this brilliant niche marketing mantra of the past year. It has been used to manipulate everyone into buying their goods at a faster rate and increased price. This story of Chanel's business practices and marketing mind games should be studied in the future by all aspiring business & marketing students in their MBA program.
