Chanel GST to keep or to sell?

I’d keep the GST. It has all the elements of a Chanel classic in a tote style bag. It may not be on trend today but it’s a classic tote. Also, trends are cyclical so it will come back in no time, especially since it’s been discontinued and Chanel’s starting a game on its classic flaps with its consumers so alternatives to it may increase in demand. Vintage Chanel totes pre-GST that has the same big CCs with the chain never lost value. And if you recall, several years ago the GST, the Medallion tote, and classic flaps were all in one category called “classics” in the chanel website. Plus, it’s your first Chanel bag so that’s some good fashion milestone!

I wouldn’t call the Louis Vuitton a classic but it’s a statement piece that wouldn’t lose its luster since it’s a monogram with an unusual shape. But I’d still choose the GST over the Vuitton.

Good luck on your decision:smile:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The GST is a tough call ;) I must agree withh you It does have all the classic elements of the classic chanel.

I would keep it especially if you see yourself wanting a Chanel tote down the line. I actually had thought about purchasing one from Fashionphile as a tote for when I need to carry a lot, ie travel or long weekends, and wanted a Chanel. I see it as a classic and was even looking at the Medallion totes. Currently, my large tote bags are a Dior Book Tote, a LV Neverful, a vintage Fendi tote, and Hermès Evelynes. Like you, been trying to curate my closet. I used to own a Chain Around Maxi (CAM), but I sold it due to me not liking the chains around the front anymore, since my style is changing, a little less edgy, more classic. The price you were offered of $2400 is pretty good since the GSTs were selling for just under that on Fashionphile, so I am pretty sure those who sold their bags there got a fraction, most likely 70%, of what you were offered. I sold my CAM for $3000 which was like new, only used a few times, and I had purchased it at retail $3800 plus tax. I also sold my Celine Micro Luggage Tote for $1300, which took me a year plus to finally decide to let go of. I see you also mentioned Dioramas, I actually kept mine which I still love and see as a classic… a gold metallic micro-cannage print.

I say keep if you see yourself wanting and/or needing a Chanel tote sometime in the future.

Yes, I love totes too! I was very tempted for the Chanel canvas tote that was released recent years but constantly out of stock (the navy and the light pink) It has thinner chain strap comparing to the GST. If I were to sell the GST, I will eventually get the canvas tote (not sure if it is any more classic though)

I think you made the right decision to sell the Luggage, my black phantom in like new condition was just quoted for $900...Should have sell it long time ago since it was just sitting there and it is such a heavy bag.

As of today, I like the Medallion tote, actually prefer it over the gst. I think it feels more timeless to me because it is clean and doesn't have the hardware. The hardware can be tricky...

I guess I’m on the “outdated” side. This has been a tote bag that I wish I had $$ to purchase back then and am sad that it got discontinued. I guess larger bags are not popular now anymore? $2400 wasn’t bad actually. If you think you no longer need it, better to let it go, right?

I find the size to be fine since I like totes a lot. I think it is the chain or its structured shape that makes it too outdated?....

I was looking at the deauvilles as well and was tempted. But as much as I like them, I don’t think they are timeless either and would rather buy a mini for that price. And, I could honestly see myself tiring of it sooner than other bags. If I were to get one, I was thinking leather.

Since the bag it’s original to you I say keep… I don’t think it’s worthwhile to sell when you can’t get the money back… they won’t go for much unfortunately. Plus I think the gst is beautiful and classic! The tote shape will never actually go out of style and it’s practical on days when you just need a big bag. My vote is to keep for now :)

I guess I am in the minority here, but I say keep because I think the GST is a timeless design (Chanel still does big CCs... see this recurring style - the one I’ve linked is from 2020). It has the classic woven chain, quilting, and the CC logo. I personally think it’s a super practical tote bag that they will definitely bring back in the future (at 5x the price...). Even if they don’t, I don’t think this style looks dated, whereas the Medallion tote brings me back to the early 2000s immediately (not that the Medallion isn’t an attractive bag - but it definitely seems like more of a trend bag to me).

ETA: I’ve actually been casually browsing for a GST because I like the style and want to get it at a good price now before Chanel brings it back and the preloved prices skyrocket. Re: LV, agree with above posters that it seems like a definite trend piece (not bad but something you should consider)

Thank you for sharing the 2020 version, it is actually my first time seeing this style. I do see it has a similar feel comparing to the gst and I actually prefer the gst over this one...

I agree with you and other on the LV, I am a bit hesistated mainly due to its shape,
and especially after Fashionpile rejected my friend's quote request for the same style.
I have sold couple of items to Fashionpile before and they almost never rejected anything,
some are quoted very low, but not a complete rejection.
I find it hard to believe they wouldn't take in the LV boite chapeau.

I’m keeping my GST black/gold because I consider it a classic, was my first and a gift from DH. I don’t use it as often now but still enjoy taking it to work and meetings. It fits my essentials and paperwork. The LV chapeau is too trendy to me but if you love it, why not?!

Thank you for sharing;) the GST is an iconic Chanel piece indeed.

I don't love the LV, but I like the size of the monogram on the Chapeau. I have been looking for a monogram LV for my collection since it is so iconic, but none of the popular canvas styles looked good on me and I always end up getting the Checked canvas or plain leather.
The chapeau is the only one in monogram that actually looked good when held in hand...
I will wait a bit longer to see if I really like the shape of it.

I'm actually kind of in the same boat. I bought a GST back in '08 for about $2100. I've debated whether or not to sell it over the years, but it's my first chanel, so I decided to hang on to it. And I do believe fashion is cyclical as well. I still adore totes, so hopefully I'll take it out again soon.
