If the increases are as significant as we are hearing (which I think they will be) I think it’s basically pricing out a lot more people than Chanel has priced out. As frequent and high as the price increases have been at Chanel they drop many collections and there are still plenty of unboxings and reveals… multiples for one season. It’s not the same for jewelry and the purchases are not as frequent. I think a 1k+ increase can be pretty detrimental to their sales for a regular love bracelet given the competition… I think it’s more likely a consumer will spend that money on bags over jewelry to keep up with what’s trending, the new “it” bag or color. Just my opinion.

It’s definitely not a matter of “if” but “when,” but for me it’s more of a matter of “by how much.” The rumors were of a drastic, substantial increase and that is what is incredibly frustrating. I can do a little increase, but when you’re talking 12-15%, that is price gouging at its finest.

As some of you know I pulled the trigger on the JUC regular as I didn’t want to be caught blind-sighted. However, if the next increase is as high as the rumor goes, it could just put me off entirely. (I want the Clash but there is a limit to how much I can take.)

It seems like all the luxury houses are converging all at once right now (Chanel, Hermes, LV, Dior) and it puts such a bad taste in my mouth. Hence I have stopped shopping from those places. But in the world of fine jewelry, the increases have been modest and more steady over time, which is why I’ve stuck around. However, if Cartier and VCA start imitating Chanel, I will just respectfully bow out as I have enough right now anyway. At some point, you just have to wonder how much longer the consumer will put up with this. I have already heard Chanel’s classic flaps have not sold as well recently due to their insane increases lately.

this i agree with. If the price increases is like less than 10% in a year then it is still quite acceptable.

As for Chanel it is still crazy in SG here. I do not have any Chanel here but i really liked the mini classic so i went in to the boutique recently and i was told there is no minis at all available and they dont do waitlist as of now. I asked about the classics in other sizes too and i was told there was no stock for all sizes. Not sure if they were smoking me since i am not a regular. I don’t think I will look at Chanel anymore.

I think it’s a matter of what you prioritize your spending on. If someone wants to purchase a coveted item badly enough, in the long run, the difference of x amount of dollars won’t stop them from buying an item that was already priced very high. This isn’t the first increase and certainly won’t be the last. Their targeted audience will remain loyal. The bottom line is, we are all speaking from points of privilege as most people could not afford these items even before an increase.

Todays Richemont figures are just impressive - especially VCA and Cartier. In the US @ +55%, no wonder why there is almost no stock available. Good for my Richemont stock but seeing these numbers I can see them moving forward with the increase.

People are spending a lot on luxury these days due to the ongoing restrictions. Not sure this will be the case once we go back to normal, if this ever happens. But if so, these sales figures might go down with people’s other priorities back and discouraging prices set by the luxury brands. This is a tricky game they are playing and long term perspectives shouldn’t be forgotten in my opinion!

Yes, thinking the same way. However, price increases tend to be sticky.

That would be amazing, but I’ve never seen luxury prices go down. I know Cartier has done so with certain pieces, but it’s highly unlikely. And I have never seen other fashion houses lower their prices after an increase. We’ve entered a phase of inflation that has catapulted us 7-10 yrs forward. I hope and wish prices for everything would go back down, including groceries, but sadly I don’t see that happening even once the world goes back to “normal.”

I don’t think of prices going down, that would be insane hahaha! But maybe the increases could slow down in percentage and occurrence ;)
