Cartier Chinese New Year Promotion - anyone know the details?

I think that would be fair if they also did a promotion for the "american new year" with gift cards...why celebrate one and not the other?

I am not sure if most Americans give gifts for New Year's, though I could be wrong. I think Cartier sends out xmas GCs while many in Asia don't celebrate xmas, so I guess it's even??

I guess you are right about that one...but would they exclude chineese from receiving an xmas gift card?

I just think its weird for Cartier to do this...but what do I know lol

At the end of the day, it's all a marketing ploy and we eat it up no matter what cuz Cartier is just so darn irresistible! :p

I'm not Chinese and I don't really see what's wrong with Cartier targeting certain Chinese customers with their Chinese New Year promotions. I mean it is their new year after all and the people that celebrate it are Chinese. If Cartier opened up this promotion to everybody, I imagine that they'll lose more than they gain. I think it's smart marketing b/c gift giving is a big component of that celebration and these customers will be more enticed to buy even bigger ticket items due to the discount. Just saying.

Still, better than nothing :p. Did you end up going to the party?

Well, what's wrong with it is that there are OTHER ethnic groups that purchase Cartier products just as much as the Chinese customers.

So why treat one group of customers better than the others? Doesn't seem right or fair to extend privileges in such a way.

For sure, I agree that there are other ethnic groups that purchase just as much but from a business standpoint, Cartier sees dollar signs flashing when they know that a certain ethnic group ups their purchasing power during a key holiday. I can see why they would completely take advantage of this and make offers that you can't refuse to someone who was going to drop more coin than usual to begin with. As for extending privileges, do you feel the same way about Cartier VIPs? If the main thing is about missing out on a discount, it's simply a question away :smile1:

Well, from what I heard, and I called several stores, they said to me on the phone "we only give discounts to our Chinese customers. You have to be Chinese for the Chinese New Year promotion," which, I think, is blatant, illegal, discrimination. If they'd said, "Its for our $20,000/year customers" or whatever, that's fine, but to make it about "ethnic origin" is illegal.

That said, those of you lucky persons of Chinese origins who received coupons--A very Happy Lunar New Year to you and your loved ones and I hope you get something really great from Cartier to celebrate!

I can see how Cartier may want to "cash in" during certain cultural holidays, I was simply pointing out that there are other cultures, such as my own, that shop A LOT at Cartier who would also appreciate being acknowledged by receiving gift cards and such during their holidays, new years, etc where gift giving IS part of the tradition.

As for the bolded part, I may be missing your point, but I believe you are asking if I feel that VIP privileges are unfair? If that is your question, my answer is NO. How much one spends is very different from one's ethnicity. I feel it is VERY fair to receive perks and benefits based upon how much money you spend at a business. That makes total sense. Many stores have point systems, rewards, etc based upon how much is spent at their establishment. If you go to Vegas and get perks for being a high roller, top dollar gambler, that's great. Happens all the time. If you get perks just for being born Italian, for example, um thats discrimination.

I wish Cartier would do some sort of incentive in the UK as I am desperate to get my second love bangle & I think if Cartier were offering money off I could pursuade DH & he also wants the yg love ring with diamonds so we could get both if there was money to be saved.:yahoo:
