^^That being said, my advice would be to start with what a bag your really LOVE using , and then built your collection, only from what you really love.

It's a bit like building a scarf collection :
You may buy and accumulate all the scarves you can , or decide you love scarves say with white background and then, buy only the white background color ways, each design, each season.
You'll build a collection of WHITE scarves, which totally make sense as collection.

This is great advice! The idea of capsule collection is different for different people. It depends on your personal style/preference, lifestyle, body shape and even the climate where you live can play a part of deciding what bags to buy, and what leather to buy. My collection is built mainly around Birkins in different sizes and that's because I really like using a tote, with a few shoulder bags (Kelly and Massai) thrown in. I find Jige is a casual day clutch rather than formal evening wear. I shy away from box / barenia because I don't deal with scratches very well, etc etc, you get the idea.

I am afraid I'd be the minority here, but I thought I could share my views about this capsule collection.

I have managed to cover all my needs with various versions of the Kelly bag.

Casual day bag, workhorse : Kelly retourne 35.
Over the years I have owned, Box leather, Togo, Barenia , Gulliver, Matte Croc, Ostrich...

Formal day bag : Kelly 32 sellier. (Ostrich, Box, Croc etc...) (35 and 28 work as well)

Afternoon events : Kelly 28 sellier (box leather) (25 works as well)

Night : Mini Kelly. 20 or Mini Mini Kelly 15 ( any leather looks perfect)

Hermes clutches do not work for me for evening, I much prefer wearing my Jersey Chanel with the chains hidden inside.... or nothing.

Love your kelly oriented universe.;) I think it takes time to create a good capsule collection that actually gets used. It's not a matter of turning up and buying 4-5 bags in one go.

Your collection sounds really lovely tbh. I would add perhaps a large open top tote like a GP or even a Birkin (less practical as harder to put on your shoulder) in a Gold-type color and a clutch as Arabesques says, a Jige or a Kelly Pochette. And since I'm dreaming out loud here, both a black Kelly and a Barenia Kelly for your day bag as those are two very different but VERY useful bags.
Colorwise, since you have brown, etoupe, and burgundy/Rouge H plus a pop pink, and are planning on black/gold - I might add one of the great Hermès "off neutrals" like Indigo, Graphite, or Raisin - or a fairly dark blue bag like Bleu Saphir.
Who am I kidding, why stop !?

Thank you for the kind comments. I have seen your bags and they are absolutely wonderful. I am definitely aiming for a barenia if I can find one and I would love to find a kelly sellier as perlerare has suggested. And yeah that stopping business is very tricky ahahha

ladysarah, I agree but I kinda like to know what I would like and need and so if out comes by will not hesitate and whilst waiting, will not get distracted...

I absolutely agree and when buying my first couple of bags, Went with what I needed for my lifestyle and also what I fell in love with. Hence I have always lusted over a lindy and bought that in a neutral colour to fit my lifestyle, then the burgundy box cos it just looked so elegant and it could be dressed up or down, then the chocolate box as a casual day bag…the other three were a bonus.

I love your kellys and tbh, am secretly stalking the bag in your avatar…TDF!

A collection is really first about how much discretionary income does one have for handbags. Then, lifestyle. Lots of dressy day events, work in an office which is "dressy", casual/family time, evening social life? For each one, there is a bag, except for truly dressy evening events - Hermes doesn't do this.

I'm an old lady and I have very little discretionary income these days. My first Hermes bag was a 32 Sellier Kelly in Cocoan Chèvre de Coromandel with GHW. This is my everyday bag. It works with leggings and a cashmere t-neck and Barbour jacket, it can go out to a "dressy casual" evening - just about anywhere I go. It's amazingly good in rain/snow but then I'm not in a large city using public transportation and walking a lot - it's going from car to store for me. It's a gorgeous bag and I enjoy it very much. Cocoan is a good color for me as my winter wardrobe is all grey/brown/black/navy. It works with all these.

My 2nd Hermes bag is a Black Box Retourne 32 Kelly with GHW. It is a vintage bag - 1973 - and is in amazing condition with the most gorgeous patina! It's the bag that makes my heart sing the most as it's just so iconic. I love the lighter weight - an issue for an old lady with back and breathing problems. I carry it just about anywhere I carry my Chèvre Kelly, but would not take it to anywhere where dampness/water might be an issue. It also goes to church with me sometimes.

My 3rd is a Clemence PM Picotin in Chartreuse. This is my May-to mid-Oct daily handbag. I could carry it in the fall and winter, but I prefer to save it for summer. Chartreuse is such a great color. In the summer, I go from neutral to lots of orange/hot pink with white shorts of pants, and it's perfect. At one point, I thought I might like a 2nd Picotin in Orange, but I really don't need it. In the summer, I also carry a 1964 Nantucket basket made for my late MIL and given to me by my late FIL after her death. I adore it and treasure it! It's for nicer occasions, not everyday.

I would adore to have a gorgeous Black Croc vintage Piano bag. I turned down one a tpf member spotted for me as I just couldn't justify the expense for a church bag when I had others that served the same purpose.

In it's place, I have 3 vintage Lederer bags I found on ebay. One is black prosorus croc in a style similar to one Hermes used to make. It is in perfect condition and is a gorgeous bag. I paid $225 for it on ebay. The 2nd, is also posorus croc, this time in a taupe color. It is very similar to the Piano - $175 on ebay. The 3rd, is a pale bone box leather bag in the same style - $150. These are bags of superb quality when Lederer's bags were made in Paris. The insides are lovely soft leather, and they all came with their own coin purse.

With an evening bag that hasn't been carried in 13 years and probably never will be again, I have all I need or have room to store! I'm not big on purse changing and don't like the purse liners many tpf members like for ease in changing bags - to me, it cheapens the inside of the bag - even the one Hermes makes, is not to be liking. I don't live in a house with huge closets so storing 20 Hermes bags would be impossible for me, even if I could afford them.

Hermes bags, like antiques, should be collected over the years based on changing taste/lifestyle/finances. When does it all at once - sort of a "binge" - one tends to tire of them and then move on to something else. Hermes bags are meant to be for life, not the moment.

I absolutely believe this and very well put

I agree with some of the other posters have made about not rushing into a purchase just to round out a collection. I have amassed my Hermes bags over a dozen years, adding when I have extra discretionary funds and a hole to fill. I don't like to purchase with the notion that I can just sell it if I tire of a bag so I don't make decisions hastily. I have turned down many bags offered to me by my SA as a result.

I don't know how long you have had your Hermes bags but if they were acquired recently, I would suggest you use them for a while and use them well. And then see where the holes are in your usage: this will become obvious to you (ie I could use a day clutch as I don't have one for afternoon events; I could use a bag that allows me to be hands free when I am with the kids ...). Unless, of course, you are building a collection just to "collect". If you are, then the analysis is different.

It's hard for me to say what your capsule collection should consist of as everyone has different lifestyle requirements and expectations.

For myself, I need bags that work with four season climate, can handle rain/snow and are not super delicate (no box or croc for me!). I am also aware of what colours I will absolutely not wear, no bright colours like pink, yellow or orange.

Here is mine which is very small, but more than enough for my current lifestyle that mainly conists of work, running around doing errands on the weekend and the occasional social events and evenings out.

Everyday workhorse - clemence etain K35
Shopping/weekend bag - rouge H doube sens in sikkim leather or etoupe Evelyne GM
Social outings - epsom rouge casaque B35 or ghillies anemone K32
Evening events - this is so rare I can't even justify an H clutch, so I stick with my Chanel pieces or Dior

Hope that helps! I know it's a relatively small usage of H, but I use other brands to meet my needs as well.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write so many pertinent points. I totally agree about looking at first ones disposable income and then at the uses of the bags. I agree about the binge buying and to be honest only started when my lifestyle changed and the family moved to Asia. Before I had a single lindy that has been with me for ages…In Asia, H bags are offered literally on tap and hence important to know what you want. I do have an idea of what I want but am grateful for all the thoughts that have been shared by others more experienced that have been used to build their collection.
