Can anyone explain the skull jewelry thing to me? :)

I agree with you on all points, Jen! :smile1: And I've often wondered the same.

When Keith Richards wears a skull ring I get it. He looks half-dead already. It works for him. But for anyone else who's not a pirate and/or rock star....no.

LOL! Thank you for my early morning chuckle. Almost sprayed the computer with coffee. And I like Keith! I think he's going to outlive all of us, personally.

What an informative thread! Personally, I like some skull items - love the McQueen scarf and would wear it. However, the other day I saw a website with skull rings with knives through the top of the skull. That was a bit too scary for me. It's all what you like and what you can get away with.

I don't like skull jewellery. it's just not my style! I'm a pretty big girlie girl but I do like an edge, I just choose to do it with leather jackets and motorcycle boots mixed with dresses.

even with McQueen scarves and stuff, I prefer his butterfly prints to the skull prints.

I Love this!!

Totally agree! I don't understand Hello Kitty at all. I've also though about asking on here for someone to explain it to me. It's probably where I live. Here only 5 year old girls have Hello Kitty things.

This is what I heard. Someone please correct me if I have it wrong.

Hello Kitty was created after the atomic bombings of WW2 to cheer up the Japanese people.

Hearing a story behind somethings creation makes me appreciate it more.

You peaked my interest so I went searching. Best I can tell Hello Kitty was developed in 1974 when Sanrio was a young company. But I like your history better :-)

I love hearing the meaning or history behind things as well. I even love hearing what meaning certain pieces have for people. Like for me, I never liked Tiffany's keys, then I was in a religious gift shop once and they had cheapo key necklaces with a tag on them about how God gives us "the keys to the kingdom". Now everyone in my family wears a key to remind us of our faith and that we will all be in heaven together. My key has brought me much peace.

So while my key might remind me of what is to come after death, skulls do remind me of my mortality and to live this life to the fullest, but this life is only part of the journey.

Skull, skeleton and other memento mori jewelry has been around for at least 500 years. The original intent was to remind the wearer of his or her mortality and the need to live virtuously. Since then, it has evolved to have many different interpretaions and is now popular with a wide range of people, from rock stars to Goth teenagers to collectors of antique jewelry. Personally, I see the skull/skeleton motif as a reminder to cherish the day and live fully because you never know how long you will be here.

I don't own any skull jewelry, but I like a lot of it. Some of the most interesting antique rings, brooches and necklaces have the memento mori theme. If you do a search for Georgian and Victorian jewelry, in particular, you will see some really intricate and fabulous designs. Having said that, I can see why some people would not be attracted to it. It's all a matter of personal taste.

This ^

I don't own any either, but I like some of it. And I'd own a skull ring WAY before I'd have anything with Hello Kitty on it. I just do NOT get HK at all. Or owls. Just a matter of personal taste. And tastes change, too. When I was little, I loved butterflies and now I cringe. Well, not at real ones, just at butterfly jewelry. :smile1:

ETA: Just finished reading about the story behind HK and I do actually appreciate it much more knowing that! Though I still wouldn't ever own any.

If you saw me on the street, you would not think I'm into momento mori jewelry.

But, some of my pieces have delicate gold skulls or skulls from mother of pearl. I like the surprise element and they remind me of my favorite lyric from "Boys of Summer":

"Out on the road today I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac. A little voice inside my head said, 'don't look back, you can never look back'"

One of my favorite wedding gifts is the pair of Elsa Peretti for Tiffany bone candlesticks. I love them and I love how formal, but unstuffy, they are. Perfect for my kind of dinner party!

So the story this was Prime Minister Tojo's idea isn't true?:shucks: Almost bought a HK item just cause I thought the idea behind it was so sweet.

I'm honestly so curious... and hope this does not offend anyone here! I know that not everything is beautiful to everyone, but I would love someone to explain the SKULL thing. All those McQueen rings and scarves and jewelry and tattoos... and okay I'm a pretty girlie girl, I know - but I just don't get it! But I would love to understand what others see in it. :shrugs:

To me it is scary. Is that the point? I honestly look AWAY from them. I don't think they're beautiful at all ... they remind me of death and evil and dug-up-rotting-haunted bodies crawling out of the pool in Poltergiest. :wtf: Skulls and skeletons give me nightmares! If I saw one on my hand all day or engraved into my skin (or DH's next to me) I think I wouldn't be able to sleep!

Why do people love skulls? Please enlighten me! :)

Momento Mori literally translates to "Remember your Mortality".
It reminds me "This too shall pass." All the luxury in the world, all the accomplishments I achieve will mean nothing if I do not contribute to those around me.

Ni conversus fueris et sicut puer factus
Et vitam mutaveris in meliores actus,
Intrare non poteris regnum Dei beatus.
Ad mortem festinamus peccare desistamus.

I especially appreciate the irony of the McQueen and Wylde skulls, in addition to Victorian jewelry - something that is rejecting luxury is embraced by the luxury market.
I also collect images of La Calavera Catrina - the Mexican Day of the Day elegant lady, also for the irony.

How about a Hello Kitty skull!? That would be awesome.

I think skulls/skeletons are just something you like or you don't. Just like some people wish that Halloween decorations were appropriate year round. It's not that we're morbid or evil, we just aren't into the super straight, sweet, bland world.

I have always loved skulls, but I am very interested in the supernatural, old religions and myths too. I'm fascinated by old style potions & poisons, but I like flowers & hearts too!

They did to the Tokidoki-Hello Kitty crossover. While they focused more on the food animals images, they did do one of the heart-and-crossbones figures.
I love tokidoki, with its chibi-death, and machine gun cows...

Love this.
I get some people might only think death when they see skulls and don't want to think about that sort of thing. For others though being reminded of our mortality helps us make more of the time we are here.
To each their own.

Oh that's funny! I always thought Don Henley was referring to fans of the Grateful Dead who are known as deadheads, and imagined a hippy sticker, not a skull on a Cadillac that no deadhead would have ever been caught ...er...dead in. I guess I'm showing my age.:smile1:
