Brass Smell?

The smell is from the canvas and I found that using a scent and alcohol-free baby wipe helped, along with leaving the bag open and unstuffed so that air could circulate in and around it. It passes quickly and it's interesting since some people cannot smell it whereas others will be bowled over and nauseous.
Your bag may be cute and you may love her to bits, but she's being a stinker and needs to go for a timeout in the corner

Hello and happy New Year to everyone ! My SpeedyB 25 from 2015 has also that metal smell. I’m sure is the zipper pull, because every time I open the bag, my hands get smelly. For that reason, I haven’t use my bag in a long time. I spoke with LV, and they will change the zipper pulls, but they need to send the bag for repair and might take 1 or 2 months. I have yet to take it to the store . In the meantime, I would love to add one of those leather straps that hang from the zipper (in order to make it easier to pull) like my Dooneys have. That could help me, because I will not be touching the zipper pull. i just don’t know where to buy them.

Yes, they changed the hardware material in the 90's.

Can I ask you, how do you find this information? Every time I want to search for something like "decline in canvas quality" or "hardware changes" -nothing come up... have no idea where to search..

At this stage, I am looking to have the hardware replaced. It looks like some of the hardware can be replaced for FREE! Though the zipper can't be replaced for free and will be costing around US$ 150. Which, considering everything, I actually think is not too bad!! THey will do a thorough assessment, which I am happy with.

So it does appear LV was willing to come to the table with something, and I am not unreasonable to pay part of the work that will be done.

There is no proper place for that. Big players like Vogue could do large-scale info-rich articles on brands, lines, bag models and trends, but they don't. And until they refer to the Monogram canvas as 'cowhide' (as they did in an article in December), I don't consider them serious. So basically nothing comprehensive is out there. What is left are the official books Vuitton sells, their magazine, the older SAs who where there in the 00's and 90's too, and there are some black-belt vintage shop owners out there who sell trunks and classics and know a lot! But it takes years and years or reading and research to put the pieces together.
That 'decline in canvas quality' is a myth made up here on the forum. Both the canvas and the hardware are constantly researched and improved. In some aspects, they are different and might feel worse (for some), but in many others they are improved and way better and longer-lasting than the ones made decades ago.

I’m a few years late to this but I too bought my speedy in 2017 and have been smelling Pennie’s too!!!! Like an awful brass metal smell. I had it lined with an organizer and has been kept very clean and somehow still suffering from the same thing. Did you ever resolve the issue?

I came here because my beloved OG bumbag has this icky metal smell. I just watched a YouTube with Jerusha on this exact issue. My bag is clean but has terrible smell. I think I need to replace all the hardware and leather! None of my other bags older than this one have any smell at all. 😷

I confess my first LV bag purchase from 2016, a speedy 25B in DE, purchased in Paris has this exact same issue. The metal zipper and zipper pulls on the bag have always reeked. The lock also tarnishes really quickly after cleaning and always shows a fingerprint (not mine). The day I bought the bag it was very hot and humid and the store was under construction so I always thought that had something to do with the metal smell and oxidation. I try to clean periodically it but nothing seems to remove that strong metallic smell. It gets on my hands every time I touch the zipper pulls.

Good to know I’m not imagining this. I’m very sensitive to weird smells and gets on my hands too. Mines hanging in the garage cuz I can smell it if it’s in my closet. Ewww

I tend to avoid bags with zippers because of this. It’s the worst! I had a speedy and it was very difficult to get into it without touching the zippers. And once that smell is on my hands it’s hard to remove
