Brass Smell?

I just received my new Speedy b 25 in DE from Louis Vuitton. It's absolutely adorable and I was so excited today for the UPS man to arrive. The Speedy came without plastic covers on any of the zippers and it smells BAD! Sort of plastic like? It's hard to define. I sent my SA a text but he's off today so I'll just wait to hear from him. I've purchased direct from the boutiques and have had bags mailed and they have never had an odor.
I know that smell; it's very potent and chemical-y, almost to the point it hits you in the back of the throat and could give you a headache, but without any of the charm or satisfaction like a new car. I had one bag arrive and you could practically see the fumes rising off of it and another one smelled just of new leather, both DE, but thankfully the smell does go away fairly quickly the more you use it/air it out. I also don't think it's isolated to just the DE print since I've personally smelled it in store on DA and Mono as well.

You've described the smell perfectly. It was overwhelming when I opened the box. I've been fortunate not to encounter this before in the boutique or in any of my mail orders. It's such a cute bag. I am far more enamored with it than I expected. There were no DE Speedy's in the boutique so I wasn't able to try one on. It's absolutely perfect. Or will be when the folds and stench are gone.

I have heard of this issue before with bags from other brands. Hermes had an issue with bad bag smells...skunk bags they were called. I’ve read stories where the bags smelled so bad, ladies were having to ride with the windows down in their cars. It was found to be the leather after many complaints and exchanges. The stories are on this forum in the Hermes thread. Not sure if that helps but I mentioned it to say I don’t doubt what you are going through and just because others haven’t heard of or experienced it doesn’t make your issue invalid. I am so very sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing and hope LV does something to make it right.

The smell is from the canvas and I found that using a scent and alcohol-free baby wipe helped, along with leaving the bag open and unstuffed so that air could circulate in and around it. It passes quickly and it's interesting since some people cannot smell it whereas others will be bowled over and nauseous.
Your bag may be cute and you may love her to bits, but she's being a stinker and needs to go for a timeout in the corner:lol:

Oh thank you!!! Yes, just because it hasn't been reported does NOT mean it isn't happening. Not all LV users are in this forum nor does everybody who may have similar issues post about it. But I do feel like putting it out there.

But don't worry - I am very unlikely to be dissuaded by naysayers here or even the SA being blase about it - making it out that I am imagining it even. I know speedy and this isn't right at all. I have a 12 year old speedy that smells divine even after all these years! But it is in the DA. This problematic speedy is with a DE, so I don't know if that could be a factor. I have been LV user for about ~15 years roughly and this is the first time it has happened to me. I mean the reissue chanel for example has more hardware and does not smell at all!

My mum has a vintage Hermes but doesn't smell - I am fairly convinced now that there are issues across ALL different luxury houses.

Mainly the hardware. THe lining has the faintest of the smell. The canvas does have the smell too.

I described it here - but it smells like an old coin which has oxidised and/or tarnished. That is what it smells like! It is possibly hand oils coming in contact with tarnished metal and getting into the areas where my hands come in contact with. BUT .... even after being professionally cleaned and hardly using, the smell has come back! You would think it would go away right considering it's been cleaned and not handled!

The team in LV has offered to change hardware now.

It seems really weird that the hardware makes that strong of a smell on the Speedy since there is not much hardware on there? I don’t get what smells? The lock, the zipper?

I had to laugh out loud to this. Oh yeah, the little stinker - that's my speedy alright. Cute but stinky. :(

I'm wondering if maybe you are unusually sensitive to certain smells? I mentioned in an earlier post about the extremely potent smell that comes off some canvas batches and that not every bag is affected and for those that are, not every person smells it or is triggered by it to the same extent as others. My SA/CA thought I was imagining it because she couldn't smell anything for the life of her but knew what I was talking about since other clients have occasionally mentioned it.
This could be a very real possibility for you; LV has changed to cheaper hardware for some of their items like the Speedy and the unique chemical traits/compounds of your body oils has caused a reaction with the metal which is causing it to smell (it happens if I wear extremely cheap jewellery sometimes because my oil is particularly acidic or if coins have been exposed to a corrosive substance which strips off their overcoat). Because you're more sensitive/aware of the odour you naturally smell it so pervasively to the point it's driving you nuts, but other individuals are more than likely not and therefore cannot smell anything out of the unusual and hence why you feel that your concerns are not being taken seriously. Just a theory, but it would make a lot of sense if correct.
