Box Leather??

thanks for the thread!

i've been looking at some pre-loved box items and would love to acquire a box birkin soon if the condition is right!

back to OP's question, i think one thing to consider is that if you are someone who can live with the scratches while the leather is developing its patina. if you can't, then the leather might not be for you! my understanding that patina will take years to develop. so unless you buy a preloved patinated box item, you may have to live with a scratched up box item for years!

good luck!

I started my box bag process with a preloved bag as I had the same reservations as you. I do say that I am clumsy, but generally there has been no issues for me after almost 2 years. Definitely got me hooked line and sinker. I will definitely be acquiring more box leather bags when opportunity allows.

Hello Gorgeous!!!!

"Our" baby is well!!!! Very well, indeed! She gets a lot of love here! Still one of my all time favourite bags!

SO good to "see" you again, Duna!!!!!:yahoo:

Well, I'm very happy to hear that! You know, of all the bags I've parted with, that's the only one I've regretted.....so I'm glad she's being well loved, lol!!

Aww, I'm sad to hear that...but not sad enough to give her back! LOL! I can promise she is WELL loved here, my love!

Do you know, I've had strangers come up to me and offer to buy it! And someone in the H boutique was desperate to order the exact same bag when she spied mine (ours). She kept stalking me around the store after she was told "no longer available in box". Spooky!

On topic: Duna and I have both had custody of a very beautiful boxcalf piece, and I tell you, it's ageing like Demi Moore. It gets more supple over time, and glossier...buttery. Even my SM purrs over it and strokes it!

I'm not sure what the word "furphy" means. But I do know from personal experience that once horribly worn corners of a very old black box back kelly (sellier) came back from the spa looking brand new. A lot of the existing deep scratches (as I stated above) were covered, but not erased, but the old girl looks nearly perfect. I have already added my own new scratches to it.
One of my recommendations would be if you were to consider box, never, ever, carry the lock and clochette, because the lock can scratch and the keys can make their way loose from the clochette and scratch the bag. That was my theory on my bag. Also, I would not carry a cadena on a box bag that you want to keep pristine as possible. That's just asking for trouble and scratches on a bag that you want to keep unscratched!! But, it will scratch and it will grow more beautiful every time you use it.
I was told by the craftsman that the repair would bring the bag back to 90%. Not bad for a bag nearly 40 years old.
Where did you bring it for spa?

Hi, may I know what did you use to dry it? Do you leave it in an aircon environment?

this happened to me many times and I just used paper towels or my clothes, whichever came handy. One time, the rbox ring bag was rained on pretty badly and I saw blisters. I thought the bag was ruined and was ready to take the loss. Surprisingly, when the water dried, the bag was as good as new. I don’t know about box leather nowadays, though.

I know there are lots of members who adore box leather, but before I invest in a Black Box Birkin, I would like to hear from those who tried box and did not "fall in love"! I am wanting to prevent an expensive mistake.

If you tried box leather and it just did not work for you, please share your story and your reasons.

Thanks in advance!
I’m one of those people you asked about. I did not “fall in love” with box leather. It’s a classic black box Kelly as well, so I thought it would be the holy grail. Perhaps my expectations were too high based on how classic it is.

The look of box leather just didn’t go with most of my wardrobe. I could not make it work with what I already have in my closet.

In summary, it’s beautiful to look at from afar, but hard to use for me.

Years ago, on the way to my car, I was caught in the rain with a box calf bag ! I quickly dried her off , and later she was as good a new.
Similar story- I live in Ireland where it rains constantly. The first time I got caught with my BBK in the rain I nearly died as blisters appeared. I lightly dried them off with a paper towel and now I couldn’t tell you where those original blisters were. Box is hands down my favourite leather but I suspect the chances of me getting another from the store are slim enough. We live in hope!
