Hi,
Got this KP from an H store a few years ago (date stamp N in a square) when I was a real H newbie (still am). I didn't even ask the type of leather and color of this bag. I suspect that this is a box leather. Am I correct?

Also, can anyone tell me the color?

I wished I have the receipt but DH got this for me as a gift.

Thanks a bunch!

Hi! I'm no expert but it looks like Rouge Vif, and box calf. Beautiful!

Thank you for your input, QF! My Constance is black so it is definitely very classic and it was a very unexpected buy. It's funny you mention developing the patina or keeping it in a box; I have a Cartier Love bangle and a lot of people say the same thing about it but I have never worried about the bangle scratching. I always thought of it as getting battle scars that were unique to me. For some reason, scratches on the Constance just make me so nervous! My DH talked me into keeping it ("What are you going to do with that much credit anyway? What if you don't get offered another bag for awhile - time value of money!") so I'm just going to brave any potential scratches and hope it doesn't hurt too much when the first one lands.

Juliet, thank you for posting those comparison pics! It's definitely exciting to know that that's what my bag could become in the future. Also, that Raisin box is to die for! I love purple so that Kelly definitely drew me in the most.

I've looked through some of Docride's posts on box calf care; would you ladies recommend waterproofing the bag to prevent potential water blisters? The thought of doing something to my bag by myself versus going to a professional makes me nervous (do you sense a pattern here? :sweatdrop:) but I definitely want to take necessary precautions to prolong the longevity of my bag.

Hi Ellie, your Constance sounds beautiful and I would definitely keep it. I can't sing the praises of docride and her methods enough-- she is a true expert and artisan but also conservative and cautious in her treatments. I believe in her waterproofing and conditioning methods 100%, and it's all stuff you can easily do yourself (and enjoy doing). Your box Constance will be a treasure and will only improve with age! Keep her!!!!!!!

Juliet your comparison pics are amazing - all smooth butteriness and shine on their glory. The natural would seem to be chamomix I remember an earlier mention that natural doesn't come in box but it's amazing how gorgeous chamomix ages to become. I have to rethink getting a chamomix bag now.

have anyone noticed bbk from the 80's leather is significantly thinner? in the pic, rough H in chamonix, and left vintage kelly in black box. I've compared these 2 and my chamonix is a lot thicker and feels heavier too.

She's definitely stuck with me :p I'm definitely going to have to sit down with DH and meticulously go through Docride's posts. One of these days, I will post a picture!

Here are some comparisons - all are K 28's:

1977 Rouge H and 1992 Natural box or chamonix (buttery, no pores):

Black 2002 Sellier (tough and thick but basically indestructible and very smooth mirror-like shine):

2003 Raisin and 2008 BBK retourne - smooth but not soft, sheen and shimmer to the leather, no patina yet:

Sorry for the long post but I just find this so interesting!

Savouring this! :faint: will be back when fully recovered. Thank you so much for posting.

I also (I'm a geek) wanted to add to my prior post: it's interesting that box leather from the same period seems like it may differ depending on the sellier vs. retourne construction. Whether different hides are chosen for sellier or there's another factor at play, I'm not sure. But comparing the box from my raisin retourne 2003 (shimmery, slightly thinner- shown on the last page) to the thicker, tougher, but more mirrored patina of my sellier from 2002 is pretty dramatic. Possibly different skin is chosen for sellier? Or treated differently? Anyone?
Here's the 2002 sellier again- no shimmer, lots of shine:
