Does anyone have black box from the 80's that can describe their leather?
I just received a BBK 32 sellier in near perfect condition however I am feeling a bit disappointed in the leather. I know...the horror!
It is different than my BB HAC from the 90's. The K has a sheen but feels thinner, has a fine grain and almost feels like there is a coating where the HAC is smooth and glossy. Is this a variation of the leather from different eras?

Not having luck getting a good close up pic, I will try tomorrow in natural light to try to show the difference.

Maybe the leather was treated?

I had a Bbk from the 80's and the leather is thinner and shinier. I can confirm that. I also have box calf from the 60's (the thickest) and the 90's (more matte) and the 80's Bbk feels flimsy compared to the other 2.

Do you have a box Kelly from the 70's?
My first Kelly was from that decade
It has a nice feel to it.
I'm curious to know your thoughts if you have one

Just like Keren, I like to hear you out on your opinion on 70s boxcalf. I have 60s,70s, 90s. No 80s. So far I'm really liking the 70s best. 90s is indeed less shiny.

Hopefully this works. It is from 1982 and as I look closely at the grain, I am starting to wonder whether H embossed this. That may account for the slightly strange feel too. There is no evidence of a coating, seams are clean and there is no over-spray or masking. The texture is smooth and very consistent and running horizontally across the bag. K is left HAC is right

That's creasing/wrinkling under the glossy Box finish. It's fairly common on older bags and even on newer box. I have a Celine Box bag and it gets that horizontal creasing where the flap opens.

You can try moisturizing the leather but I have an 1979 box bag and the creases never went away with treatment.

That's totally normal, it is leather and movement will cause creases. Since box is smooth, you see the creases, whereas you don't as easily with textured leathers. With my first-box bag, I took it to H and the craftswoman laughed and said that was totally normal, for the reasons I stated :)

I thought that too, but on the K it is so perfect and consistent across the entire bag, not just at the points where there is stress - such as the flap opening. On my HAC, the wrinkles are all over and look random, they go all different directions. But the K, the grain pattern is perfectly straight horizontally and exactly the same on the front as it is on the back, and all over the entire bag, even the sangles. To make it more interesting, the bottom has the same grain pattern but running vertically. I don't plan on returning it, just as I look more at it, it seems there might have been a change in manufacturing during the 80's.

I think it might be because the pressure points on a B are different than a K. With a B, you must carry it with the handles, and the handles are secured on the body of the bag, whereas the K has a top handle and can be worn with a shoulder strap or top handle.

I have box leathers from different years, and they are definitely different.

I don't think it is anything but normal wear on the leather, it is so beautiful, enjoy it!

Come to think of it, I have a box calf draw from the 50's, a kelly from the 60's, constance from the 70's, bbk from the 80's and a dalvy from the 90's!

Love Box Calf from the 70's. I have Rouge H Constance and I love the thickness. It's shinier than the 90's but not as shiny as the 80's. I think the box calf from the 50's-70's were the best!!

Thanks for your reply! Omg can I see can I see your 50s? I'm eyeing on a rouge H b30 Boxcalf 2000s. From pics, she doesn't look quite as luscious as I would prefer it to be but maybe give her time to patina nicely.
