Bloomingdales offering 20% off your first purchase

I had checked my blooms account online and talked to credit services and it all worked out. I opened my account online so the max credit is $500 and so you cannot charge 30% of your purchase on the card. What happens is: say your credit is $500 but your purchase is $4000. What happens is they charge u for the full amount at first and the discount appears on your statement. So with the $4000 bag (assuming no sales tax), $500 gets charged on your bloomies card and the rest ($3500) on a separate visa/mc/aa/discover. Now since your discount is $800 and more than your credit line, you have a $300 credit (or negative bloomies card balance). You can now call credit services and they will send you a check for this credit once they confirm your address bc after all, this is your own money owed to you for the discount. So, you don't even pay the $500 that was put on your blooms card. I did exactly this and Am now awaiting my check in the mail. Also, you can use this $300 credit toward other purchases but I don't plan on buying anything else from and wanted the cash back.

Congrats on your new bags and thank you so much for explaining this. I was wondering how this worked after reading they would put a $500 limit on the credit card initially.

Does anyone know how many times a year Bloomingdale's has the 20% promotion? And about which months they occur in?

I think it's twice a year and it's typically March/April and September/October. And since the 20% just passed, I'm assuming the next 20% won't be until the spring. There is a 15% promotion going on right now and if the 20% isn't being offered again until spring, getting a bag during 15% is not a bad idea since prices will most likely increase by the end of the year (at least that's what I've been reading here on tPF). They offer 15% pretty often (I heard from my SA they do it twice a month) so it's not like you have to decide right now that you want to do it and I'd recommend you call first and make sure they actually have the bag you want in stock before signing up.

Just a little fyi, there are only 3 Bloomingdale's locations that carry Chanel and they are South Coast Plaza (California), Chestnut Hill (Massachusetts) and 59th St. New York.

Also, to get around the whole maximum credit of $500 online, I was told that if you sign up in store, it'll be easier to get a higher credit limit since the $500 online limit is an online and security precaution.

Oh and I wanted to add something in case someone comes to this thread and doesn't feel like reading though the 25+ pages of this thread...

If you open up a Bloomingdale's card to take advantage of the 15%/20% off, you have to wait 3 years after closing the account before you can re-sign up for another card and take advantage of whatever discount they are having at the time. The discount only applies to the Bloomingdale's store card and not to the American Express card for anyone who was wondering whether or not signing up for the store card and the American Express gives you 2 ways to get the discount.

I have always wanted to find out about the time overlap you need before you can reopen an account. Can you clarify again about the AE card you just mentioned? I don't know if I get this right. If you have the Bloomingdale's Insider AE card you don't get the new account discount??

I talked to someone in Credit Services and in the regular Customer Service department and they said that the American Express card is not included in the 15%/20% off promotion and that the discount only applies to the Bloomingdale's store credit card. I've talked to numerous CS representatives and SA's in person and over the phone but I could be wrong and could have been fed the wrong information. So, definitely call and speak to customer service yourself before taking my word for it.

Did you open up an AE card as opposed to the store card for the 20%?

I have no idea what I opened! I just told them I need to open a Bloomindale's account with major purchase account as instructed by the SA from Chestnut Hill. So I went to the store near me to open the account and specifically told them I wanted to get this Chanel that costs $4300 and want to use the 20% with it. So I have no idea what I opened. Then I just called Chestnut hill and gave him my info so that he could process the Chanel.

I really hope they didn't mess up this 20% thingie because I would be really mad if they did. No one told me if you have the AE card you don't get the 20%. Never knew that. This is new info I just heard from you and I hope whoever told you that is wrong.

I'm sure you're okay then if you were instructed by your SA. I was initially instructed to open a major purchase account as well, but I don't live anywhere near a Bloomies so I had to open my account online and then call credit services to verify my account before purchasing.

BTW, who was your SA at Chestnut Hill? Mine was Jane Simon and she's absolutely wonderful!

James was assisting me with my purchase. Super nice SA. All of them at Chestnut Hill are nice.

lipglosschic87 and yodaling1, you guys are the best and most helpful.

I was just wondering about how long it takes to re-activate a closed account to take advantage of another round of 20% savings, and you read and answered my mind! So maybe another new bag in 3 yrs??? :)

I also went to the Chestnut Hill store, and worked with Laura, who was super nice and patient. I got a jumbo black caviar with SHW, but keep going back and forth thinking it's too big for me. Maybe I ought to exchange for a M/L? Also I wished the new jumbos were not double flapped.

ohhhh the M/L is my next purchase hopefully...I want it in beige claire caviar with GHW.

What do you plan to use your flap for? Everyday or just going out/special occasions? I feel like the jumbo is great for everyday if you carry a lot of things with you. I got the jumbo with GHW during the 20% and since it's my first chanel bag for myself I really wanted to make sure I got a bag I could wear everyday and use it to its fullest. If you are someone who doesn't carry much with you, then maybe the M/L would be perfect for you.

Also, if you are looking for a smaller purse like the M/L, you should check out the Timeless Classic Clutch Flap...it's a bit bigger than the M/L in length but smaller than the jumbo overall. There is another thread on here talking about this clutch and it contains pictures to compare the sizes. It's also much more affordable ($2100).

But getting back to the topic at hand, both the jumbo and M/L are beautiful bags and whichever you decide to get, you will be very happy because they're both timeless and classic pieces. =)

I def carry alot more than I need to, so the size and dimensions of the jumbo is not the issue. It's just the weight of the bag (with all the items in it) that kind of bugs me, which is why I question if the double flap adds unnecessary weight to the bag.

I did look at postings of the clutch, and am considering it. I saw a bag similar to the m/l and clutch size in the store, and it's from the Orient Express line and retails for $2650 (I don't have style # though). It's in the softer lambskin leather, so am considering that too.

But, like you said, the flaps are timeless and classic. I will probably wind up keeping the jumbo. Can't beat that!

Same here. I wish they weren't double flapped. It makes it so much harder for me to grab my wallet (i.e. credit card) to pay for my Chanel purchases. LOL!!!

Like what lipglosschic87 was saying, jumbo is really more for everyday use and medium is more for evening so you have to decide how you plan to use the bag. The compartment in the medium is rather small.

Just like lipglosschic87, medium would be my next Chanel too so it will be something more vibrant like red with GHW for me. If not, I have to settle for red with SHW.

I don't know if closing my account and reopen in 3 years would be helpful since I don't think I will be able to afford anything from Chanel in 3 years with the price hike trend that is going now.
