Best Jewelry Decisions You've Ever Made?

1. My tank francaise and tennis bracelet. I love it to death and it just goes with everything.

2. Marrying my husband lol! He does not have sisters so his mother and grandmother have given me some of their pieces. I plan to pass it down to my future daughters or his brother's daughters to keep it in the family but for now they're mine! I've gotten 2 VCA's (always loved from afar but never could afford) from his mother and my engagement ring was grandmother's.

3. Quitting costume jewelry. Like what most of the ladies mentioned, it was just not worth it. It really was instant gratification. Thinking about it now gets me sad, I could've gotten a nice holiday out of it.

4. Lurking in the tpf jewelry forum and price scope. Everyone's thread (questions, problems, polls or reveals) and pieces of advice taught me so much about jewelry and the art of looking elegant. I still have a lot to learn but I'm already in the right forum.

1) buying CZ earrings instead of diamond (I lose the backings all the time)
2) not buying anymore gold-plated pieces, even cheap fun pieces from F21. hate that the finish turns green/fades.
3) *not* getting a halo on my e-ring. I had the hardest time deciding but I think I will regret getting a halo setting.

My T&Co 18k open heart earrings have been a staple since 2003, along with my ladybug necklace. My vca 5 motif vintage alhambra bracelet is awesome, and my jade bangles plus my 2 jade pendants. So happy with these!

They are stylish and it just fits to every occasion flawlessly.

Wise choice, haha, wear them in good health!

Amen. I have gone down the same road. Focusing on what is really precious to me has made me feel much more content and accomplished.

That is true. There is so much knowledge amongst TPF. It makes me humble and glad to learn. And it is fun to read and take part in discussions.

The best decision I have ever made re purchasing jewelry is to not give my money to any brand or company with completely horrible customer service. I don't care how pretty a piece is, if a brand won't stand behind it or has a nasty attitude, I won't buy it. Too bad for you, Hearts on Fire.. your customer service is rancid and i don't regret spending my money at Tiffany's instead.

Great thread!

My best jewellery decisions are:

1. Finally buying my Cartier Love cuff last June. I lusted after this for ages - thanks to TPF! - and am so glad that I disciplined myself to save for it (something I find really hard - so many other distractions!). I wear it almost every day and love how versatile it is. It always makes me feel put together.

2. My diamond studs. I have several pairs of earrings that I rotate on a regular basis but always come back to these. They are classic and elegant and although I would like to upgrade to a bigger pair at some point hopefully later this year I find the size of these works well for everyday wear.

3. Curating my jewellery collection so that I have a smaller selection of pieces that really work for me, my tastes and my lifestyle - and selling the rest in order to free up funds to buy more said pieces :p

4. Quitting both silver and costume jewellery. I was never seriously into costume (just cheap throwaway stuff when I was younger, never designer costume jewellery as I have always thought that is a waste of money) but bought a lot of silver at one stage in my twenties. I have since sold it all at a huge loss and wish I had used the funds originally to buy gold and other fine jewellery pieces.

I decided to stop waiting to get great pieces of jewellery as gifts or waiting for when I have lots of money to buy for myself. I've always believed in buying what I liked for myself but this extended more to simple, everyday pieces. In the last year I've actively looked out for great deals and special prices and feel pretty happy with almost all of what I've got, even if some months money was pretty lean! I never would have got them if I waited for "extra cash".

I've also made a few good jewellery contacts that has led to some extra discounts and special treatment! My next purchase will be either a white gold tennis bracelet or a love bracelet before the end of the year. I may explode with happiness then!

Replacing the screw posts on my diamond studs with regular posts and butterfly backs. Not only did the screw posts hurt my ears, I couldn't be bothered putting them on so I didn't wear them. Now I wear them all the time.

Good point!

Some of my best decisions are ones you ladies have made, too!

1. Getting rid of costume or pieces that I didn't wear.

2. Extending the length of my favorite necklaces. 16 inches seemed juvenile as I got older. I tend to get more wear out of necklaces that are longer than 22 inches.

3. Not getting carried away with multiples of my favorite designs. At one time I had such a long list of H bracelet colors to acquire. Now I'd prefer to have different options from different designers - as well as more pieces with sparkle for that price.

4. Selling clothes and bags to purchase jewelry. Much easier to mix and match jewelry pieces --- and they get worn daily!

5. Trying on rose gold and yellow gold pieces. I was anti-yellow gold, but it looks great on me. I think of rose as somewhere in the middle, so I've become a convert.

6. Prioritizing, shopping around or holding out for sales (when possible). By establishing a wish list, I don't impulse buy and wait till the right time to acquire a piece.

I find it interesting that so many of the ladies in the thread have given up silver jewelry just as I'm getting back into it. I bought nothing but gold since I was out of high school until last year. Now I'm splitting about 50/50 between classic items in gold and more quirky silver artisan items.

And back on topic, my MVPs are my diamond stud earrings, my RHR, and my ruby and diamond ring.

I love silver, especially chunky pieces that are well designed. It doesn't blemish as quickly with me as it seems to with others. I make sure I clean mine often and properly to really see the beauty. There are some outfits I have that I find look best with silver.

Purchasing estate jewelry. My wedding band (18 DAYS LEFT!!) was from an estate section, and appraised at double what I paid. A tennis bracelet that my fiance purchased for me as a future gift (hoping for birthday!) appraised at triple what we paid. ALL BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE WORE IT! I'm obsessed.

1. Buying classic pieces, rather than things that will date (trendy costume jewellery) or with low resale value (anything that's not gold/platinum/precious stones)

2. Diamond studs - I wear them with everything. Related to that...

3. Buying from online diamond vendors. Obviously, I did a lot of research and went with trusted and highly recommended ones only. It was a nerve racking experience the first time (overseas transaction and all), but I literally saved thousands on my diamond studs and they were better quality than anything I have found here.

4. Buying a nice designer watch (Cartier BB) which glams up anything I am wearing at the time. It makes me smile every time I look at it (almost 2 years later!)

5. Antique/vintage jewellery sites. Haven't bought anything yet, but stalking on a regular basis to find THE perfect art deco RHR!

6. La Pousette earring backs. The security of screwbacks with the ease of removal of butterfly backs.
