HH, i think QM posted that just as an example of hermes saddle leather -- the Essentielle saddle is acually covered in buffalo hide. saddles do end up with a gorgeous burnished look because of the constant friction from riding and leather care (clean after every ride!). though black leather, used a lot in the dressage world, doesn't get the glow that brown leather does.

i've posted this before -- but for reference here's by barenia kelly that gets a lot of use next to a barenia clutch that's in new, unused condition.

DQ,

Yep, just an example of saddle leather and how it wears and how barenia as a saddle leather will look over time.

I love your bags...but I must know why the clutch looks so new, do you not use it? It's so unique...don't think I have ever seen one...

i just never use it -- it's too small for a purse and too big for a makeup bag. i really should sell the bugger, but the shooting star clasp is just so cute that i haven't been able to make myself do it. want me to bring it next weekend for you to meet?

ETA, it looks bigger than it is in the photo -- it's very, very narrow, like an envelope.

DQ i have not seen that pic before. wowee. the gh on barenia is such a clever touch, glamming up the rough leather. beautiful.
i always imagine barenia showing dirt but your kelly looks very very clean.

so, over time, does barenia soften enough to have some give, or does it stay super rigid??

HH, it's actually a pretty squishy leather -- i think it's tanned over several months soaking in leather oil, so it emerges quite supple. which may also be why the marks give it a beautiful patina -- the 'finish' goes all the way through the leather.

when you look at it closely you absolutely see spots and scratches, but it doesn't really look like dirt -- i'm not sure how to explain it, but when the patina develops it's almost like looking into the finish, which is made of various layers. and the shiny surface is the end result of all the different events that left their mark on the bag.

yeah, THAT was clear as mud. :p i'll go take some pictures.

Thank you all for your nice comments.

DQ, please give your lovely kelly a little rub for me!!
QM, love that barenia picotin. Here are pics for ref of one with vermillion that I did not buy. DANG, it is cute!!

HHeels, you know, I am surprise at how stiff the barenia isnt, IYKWIM. The design of the evelyne really eliminates any possibility of slouching, but the leather is really not super stiff. You can see that in the picotin....
If you had a sheet of it, you could easily play around with it... Which would be fun!!

CB,

HOW could you pass it up?????

I'm totally in love with this leather...and I've also compared it to Coach leather (pre CC coach from 15+ years ago)....it's soft...maybe H's closest leather now is Swift at this point as far as texture??? But I don't think it will slouch like swift will.

I'm debating on changing my SO from a Trim to a Kelly...just haven't made the leap yet....and don't want to even know what the wait would be...

WOW DQ!!!   ... That Kelly is incredible also.....Whoa, I would sleep with a Barenia Kelly on either side of me....but, now it may be clear why I am single, ;). Those are two amazing treasures!!

^^ mrs.m, you crack me up!

ok, here's what i mean -- some close-ups of spots and marks, and then some regular shots with and without flash. in six months the spots and scratches visible now will be covered up by new patina. and i left the stuffing out of the bag so you can see the squish factor and how it caves in on itself without support.

I had asked for pics of scarves, and she emailed me a ton of them, then I opened up this pic, so I called and said, Hey Yeti, this isnt a scarf, whats up :graucho: ...But I CANT, I must SAVE!! And I have never tried on this style.... I want a barania HAC!!! 32. Natural. I really would use that bag! ~~~sigh~~~~

Barenia Kelly.......sigh, drool, sigh.......worth its WAIT in gold, I'd say! The trim is so classic. What a choice!
