I purchased a beautiful Prada handbag at Nordstrom. When I got home I saw it had a bad scratch in the leather. I went right back to the store and exchanged it. The SA said they would not put it back on the floor. I went in a couple of weeks later and was surprised to see it on the shelf again.
I assume because not everyone cares about the scratch...and maybe they discounted it to make up for the scratch. Some people don't have a problem buying damaged/slightly damaged goods.

I rarely make returns for refunds. I usually buy online, or for my children while shopping without them. In the case of items that don't fit, I'll take them to the B&M store to exchange. Usually, I'll end up spending more.

I used to purchase a lot of Coach. They had a ridiculously liberal return policy that people took advantage of. You had to be really bad to get a letter from them. I remember people returning bags that had a stitch on the strap loose and Coach gave them a brand new bag. The bags were used to death.

I remember buying a $1000 bag from them and I wore it into the store (the day after I bought it). It had all of my stuff in it too. The SA asked me how I liked it and I told her it was a little awkward to get into and heavy. She took the bag from me and told me to pick out a new one.

I don't know if their policy has changed though. I rarely shop "in store" anymore.

I don't return often but I try things on before buying. I worked some retail during college and the returns were awful... i.e. used bathing suits and clothes purchased from other retailers with tags replaced. I can see why the policies are in place but still feel bad for people who don't live near good B&Ms and have to gamble with online photos.

Dooney and Bourke outlet in Las Vegas (Premium Outlets) did the same thing to my mom's friend. She bought a large brown tote and used it the day after she bought the bag, then she complained to my mom that it was heavy (she's a small gal, probably about 5'3 or so). So the next day when she returned to the outlet, my mom complained to the Sa's about the weight issue and they let my mom's friend exchange the bag. Her friend exchanged the brown tote for a large drawstring bag. I think the Sa's decided to keep her used tote and resell it, I think. They were being too nice but I wasn't happy that my mom thinks it's ok to take advantage of the return policy like that.

This is ridiculous. Department stores are only hurting themselves. Women who work have very little time for shopping so they go in buy stuff for their kids and themselves try on at home and return at their convenience. They are trying to make innocent acts criminal ones.

I cannot stand retail people who have issues with people returning. If it's their commission they are concerned with they should work at stores that pay decent wagescrather than stores like restaurants who don't pay their employees enough and expect customers or diners to make up the difference! I also cannot stand when I go to stores like bergdorfs when I am hounded by commission crazed sales people. They are fake and woukd tell you a trash bag looked good on you to get a commission..I don't understand why stores don't get it..most women prefer to shop in peace

Because they have certain sales goals they have to reach otherwise they might get in trouble, they'll get talked by the manager and if they don't meet their sales goals at all, they have a chance of getting fired.

I'm 5 feet short and 98lbs w/ size 34 shoes...I just realized I am probably the shortest girl here w/ the tallest DH!! He's 6'3 w/ size 13 shoes!! LOL

I've got you beat, lol! I'm 5 feet exactly and my DH is 6'4 1/2 tall. But my shoe size is a 35. I'm exactly a 4 1/2. You must have just as difficult a time finding shoes as i do! You and your hubby must be adorable! Tall men seem to love short girls...

I was just going back and revisiting this thread since it popped up. i don't mind restricted return policies but the problem i have is that some of these stores (Victoria's Secret for example) don't keep track of purchases as well. The return software programs they use only track your return history and not purchase history. So if you return $200 worth of items they could ban you. However you could have spent $2000 and you'd have only returned 10%. It just annoys me so much. They need to improve the software and track everything, like Louis Vuitton does. It would also help cut back on shoplifting...

I would love to know where these mythical jobs you speak of exist...But anyways, there are lots of honest, good commissioned sales people around, don't disparage everyone trying to make a living because of some personal experiences.

It is funny to hear about other couples with the same height differential as DH and I. I am just under 5'3" and DH is 6'8", so the difference is about the same. I always love that I can wear any shoes I want to and never have to worry about being taller than DH.

Regarding returning and the possibility of being banned from somewhere, I guess I've just never thought about it being a possibility. Sure, there are times I buy on impulse and return items I never should have purchased in the first place, but I've always figured that there are people who buy SOOOO much more than I do. I look at items that other tPFers have purchased, for example, and realize that my buying habits are pretty modest. So I've always figured that my chances of getting banned from anywhere were mostly non-existant!

years ago, when I worked retail, there was this one customer who would buy and return everything... not worn or anything, tags intact and everything.. we often wondered if she was just lonely and needed an excuse to come in and chat.

even though we felt bad for her, it was a real nuisance and obviously, we'd chat and be friendly, but not go out of our way to help with a purchase because we knew it would come back.

One day, she saw a jacket she wanted and she saw some flaws.. after going back and forth with the manager, she was finally offered a really good price on it..BUT her receipt would be stamped "final sale".. absolutely, positively no returning it.

Here comes the shocker... after ALL that, she didn't buy it.

I totally agree!

I'm a chronic returner....especially with really high end goods. I will examine the items as best as i can in store but always miss something. For high end prices, i expect perfection. Other times, I bring the item home only to find it doesn't work for me.

I hope that SA's don't brand me, I don't mean to be annoying but with prices of high end goods, i have to make sure i am going to buy something i will use and not have it sit in a closet b/c I'm concerned about being judged or recieving letters from companies.
