Bags you don't get

The conversation seems to be fun so I'll brave the waters.

My perspective on bags changes over time. So, styles I didn't "get" years ago, I may love now.

For example, at one time, I really didn't get bags with simple lines. I wanted some studs or buckles or doodads of some kind. Now I really appreciate a clean, architectural design in a wonderful leather...and I'm not so much for the doodads.

I also didn't get spending more than a couple hundred dollars on a bag. Now, I'm comfortable spending what I need to for the bag I want.

But, specifically, the bags I currently don't get are:

• Givenchy Pandora - I really don't like this bag. But, beyond that I don't get how the slouchy box thing warrants paying premier dollars - even if it is in a great quality leather.
• Longchamps totes - I know these are super popular. But, honestly, I think they're so very ugly. I don't care for the shape or the contrast colors with the trim. And, the little stick out tabs on the ends of the zipper look unfinished. I can see how these may be functional. But I don't see any beauty in these bags.
• Goyard - I can't see any beauty in this pattern either. It's kind of sad. Add the coated canvas and I'm done.
• Coated canvas mono prints - I don't see the overwhelming appeal. I don't hate them. I could even buy one some day. (Ironically, I like the pochette metis that the OP doesn't like.) But, I would think this would be a niche material / style. Something to have when you really need a carefree bag in your collection. Not a go to or something to aspire to.
• Chanel Gabrielle bucket / tote / whatevers -These bags are a train wreck. Quilting, hard bottom that's easy to scratch, multiple chains in multiple hardware colors, zipper, logo'd pull tab.... Chanel needs to keep innovating and offer "youthful" or fresh designs but this is isn't the way.
• Very embellished bags - Gucci, Dolce & Gabanna, etc. have gone crazy. The bags aren't elegant. They look like bad craft projects.
• Celine Luggage Bags - they look like they have robot faces which I would think I'd like since I'm a sci-fi fan. But, I think these bags are just very, very unattractive.
• WOC's - I need to carry more than cards and a lipstick. Also IMHO the proportions look off on most people. Why not get a small bag that offers more flexibility?

But, I want to put in a vote for a bag I don't want to own because I actually do "get" it - the Neverful. I don't like open top totes and I don't particularly like the mono prints the NF usually comes in. But, I can see how these would be super functional. They're lightweight with large capacity and the mono prints are considered a neutral (even though my eye can't make that happen) So, it's not surprising to me that looooots of women have or covet that bag.

Yup! This thread is meant to be that! Just lighthearted.

I agree with the Goyard print. I didn't know it was expensive until I read it was.

And also the brown LV monogram - I also can't see how it is a neutral.

Saw a pochette metis again earlier - I suppose it's ok, I just don't get why it's so expensive.

In terms of aesthetics, I don’t get hobo bags. I find them so ugly, especially that BV one.. in my head, it just looks like a ball sack with a hole in it (no offense to anyone that likes them :flowers:). For functionality, I don’t get designer backpacks. Regular backpacks are for lugging around heavy books/items and are meant to be durable, so it feels weird seeing backpacks in delicate leathers and hardware that can get scratched. Also I absolutely don’t get the LV Palm Springs hype.. especially the mini one. I love mini bags as much as the next girl but a mini backpack is just so strange to me :confused1:
There are other bags that I dislike but I can see their appeal to others.. hobo bags and tiny backpacks; I just don’t get it.

@immigratty, I laughed out loud reading your post! It's so descriptive and funny. I must admit to being a fan of the Chanel gramma quilts, but I do see your point.

and there are a couple I like, especially the boy bag, they just seem repetitive. like I can always point out a Chanel, but not bad bags [obviously given the tremendous amount of loyalty the brand has] and thx lol

I love a good Peg Bundy moment. I always tell people that leopard print is my favorite color. I even have zebra and leopard print keys! LOL! Because of my job, I don’t own much.

I don’t get anything Céline or Chloe. I adore how the bags look, but I have yet to find one that’s functional. I can’t deal with a bag that’s more form than function.

I also don’t get tote bags. I’d rather carry a backpack which I do have for work.

LOL whoever said Peggy Bundy is Correct, and I have mine too hahaha

The JW Anderson Pierce bag is probably the most popular bag that I really don't understand. In any way.

Other than that I do agree with a lot of comments here, but I also know that I have changed my mind about a lot of bags (especially LV that I hated for a long time and now love, even the monogram....).

yes I've been seeing that lately...your bag has it's flap pierced lol

hopefully it stays light hearted, and the people who do THEE MOST remain outside of this thread. for the life of me I can't figure out where the Goyard price tag come from...and more importantly why ppl pay it. and yes, when ppl say the LV mono is "neutral" I'm standing their like :confused1::confused1::confused1::confused1:

lmao @ hobos...you are spot on in your description. and designer backpacks wholeheartedly agree. I ride a motorcycle [crotch rocket] so a backpack is a staple. I saw a cute Gucci one I wanted, then looked at the Jansport I've only used for 2 seasons [and I do not live in a warm place where you can ride all year, a season is roughly 4-6 months] and it looks like a DISASTER!! why on God's green earth would anyone pay that much money for something that is made to basically be destroyed. and mini backpacks, ur argument is spot on.

I just remembered another: Valentino rockstud bags. I don’t get how sharp studs are attractive on anything. Same goes for the shoes which are super popular with Instagram folks.

I also dislike designer backpacks, esp the minis. I was a 90s kid so seeing them back again makes me wince.

And for the record I do love Peg. Just not her style :heart:

Omg ball sack!! [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24][emoji24][emoji24] lol. Now that is all that I will think of when I see them.

Also the Lady Dior bag. It looks cute but it looks hard to pull off for some reason. It's shaped like a toy or something, I can't explain it.
I love Dior bags (though I'm pretending the current designer's offerings don't exist). And I've been planning to buy an LD for a while. But, for some reason, I haven't pulled the trigger.

Now I'm like  Wait, did you just read a hidden part of my brain. Er, I think you're right! Ruh roh, Shaggy. I can't explain my hesitation either. Toy? Weird Box on a string? I need to regroup cause I still want my LD!
I agree with animal print. Never liked it, always thought it looked tacky. Every time I see leopard I think Peggy Bundy from Married with Children. Sorry, but that’s all I see.

The Givenchy Pandora I never liked, either. I actually saw it twice today at two different department stores and I still don’t get it.

Definitely don’t like anything highly embellished, either, although if it’s a floral print I will give it a pass.

Not into the Gucci Marmont line that has taken up a storm with so many YouTubers. I think it’s the heart that turns me off the most. The GG looks like a CoverGirl emblem and when I felt the bags in person, the leather felt cheap to me. Shame because I do like Gucci.

Anything patent leather. Don’t like it.

I can understand why people wouldn’t like Chanel; I love the brand but I will admit it has a “granny” look to it. I never liked it in my teens and twenties for that reason. I appreciate the brand now that I’m in my 30s.
This is cracking me up!! I have always been such a fan of animal prints. But, my "eye" just sees it as overdone and tacky right now. Kind of a "bitter first wife" vibe? Which is killing me because they're so cute...I think?
I think this is cyclical. In 2-3 years animal print bags will come back in style and those of us who are dormant fans will be right back - suddenly trendy and not tacky
Speaking of CoverGirl, this compact brings back memories! Every girl in my junior high class had this exact pressed powder. My color was soft honey.:love:

This cannot be unseen!!:wtf:
I don't get bags that aren't soft slouchy leather..
LOL! I have a haaaaaarrrrrd time wearing slouchy bags. My stuff disappears never to be seen again. So I have to have some structure.

This is a great thread! It’s been fun to read all the comments....without the snark.
As previously stated, I am a bag junkie. I can talk myself into almost ANY bag.
After reading the entire thread, I thought I would throw in some history of the bags most people say “WTF” about.
LV- originally started as a luggage company. The mono print came about because of the large amount of knockoffs of the checkerboard print. The iconic “Speedy” was invented for women to travel with, like a train Case. Servers were becoming less common and women had to carry their own stuff so they made it lightweight.
Chanel- women are joining the work force. Simple Un fussy clothes were needed. Classic styles that were of good quality material. Back then, women of 35 were “over the hill” and as a result, these bags were often seen as old lady bags as they were the ones who could afford them.
“Nut sacks”. Sorry I will always call them that now [emoji14] became popular in the 60’s with the emerging hippie movement. Young women didn’t want the structured, rigid bags their moms and grandmas carried. Frye motorcycle bags were in huge demand as women wanted a free and easy lifestyle.
The 70’s brought women to the workforce in unprecedented numbers. Military style pantsuits and multi pocket bags that could be thrown in a giant work tote were seen as workwear.
Disco bags became hugely popular. Small enough to take clubbing and hold only a few essentials.
MTV changed how many dressed. Loud colors in weird fabrics that showed to advantage in “fast moving” dance montages.
The 90’s brought the advent of plain. Clothes and bags in neutral colors with simple lines that at first glance made it hard to tell if they were expensive or not.
Because of new EPA regulations, it became cheaper to make and ship items from overseas. Quality control for some companies just went out the window.
The Aughts brought us minimalism. Women want simpler, easier to manage wardrobes. And with it an all purpose bag that carries them through their day.
Companies don’t make money if women only need ONE of anything, so they change it up every season. Create a “need” for an item even if it doesn’t fit our currant lifestyle.
so they look to the past for shapes and colors that the current gen hasn’t seen.
This makes for a fun flip through magazines, but no practicality for a modern women.

how could I forget the rockstuds  they remind me of s & m, do they come with whips and chains?

thx for the history lesson. And for LV now ppl r bootlegging the mono. I hate bootleggers.:panic::mad::facepalm:

Bitter first wife vibe...hahahaha, I love it!

I'm surprised CoverGirl didn't go after Gucci. That is technically their old emblem after all. FYI, I'm being facetious. ;)

I love the look of the Lady Dior personally but cannot get over the narrow opening and the fact the handles need to be upright when using it as a shoulder bag. Pretty bag, but again, I can see why it doesn't appeal to some.

Fun thread! :girlsigh:

Sorry. I DID get a little carried away.
What I was trying to get at is that designers fall in love with “retro” and never think that the modern woman doesn’t live in way that so many beautiful bags are useful.
