Bag Insults - Ever Had One?

A co-worker told me right in my face that she finds me materialistic as she cant stand me changing my handbags every few days. I told her...the term materialistic is meant for people who loves branded things/finer things but could not afford it and try ways to buy them. I appreciate the finer things in life and sweety since I can afford it..why not?

I always used to get bag insults at work. One of my colleagues kept pestering me on the price of my Gucci and I told her it was pricey but she kept hounding me until I gave in and told her. Then she said to me, "I can't justify buying any bag at that price. It must be nice not to have anything to pay for. Your parents must be giving you money."

I was like wtf? I've been buying my own clothes, bags, makeup, etc. with my own money that I worked for since I was 13 years old!!! The irony is that another colleague of mine is always coming in with different pairs of CL heels and more expensive bags and yet no one ever makes those comments at her!!!

YUP! mean-mouthed jealousy

It's your money, you spend it your way and she can spend hers her way

I think people that make snippy remarks are a bit jealous. Why else would you say something rude instead of something nice. Or how about nothing at all.....that would be even better. If you can't say something nice, then don't comment. That's the way I see it.

Hehe all the time. But it's because I'm at this point where I appreciate beautiful but expensive things, but I'm not willing to shell out for them. So my sis pokes fun at my ugly cheapo bags. She also gifts me or hands down to me nice bags, so I don't mind this setup!!

umm..hate to say it, but you're materialistic. everyone here is. i am too.

materialistic has a bad connotation to it yes, but by definition it means to be concerned with material things, nothing more nothing less. but that is not what ALL of us are concerned with. we're all good people, well most of us anyways. some are doting mothers or caring girlfriends or hard working students, but we're all materialistic. Being materialistic is a part of who we are, but it is not the ONLY attribute that defines us. because really, if we weren't materialistic, if we didn't care at all, we wouldn't be on this forum.

that said, and back to topic on hand.

i can't recall a time for myself personally, but my sister gets a lot of comments like that, even from adults, and she's only 17.

For example, she was out with her friends the other night, and she started talking about how she was filling out the customer card at Tom Ford, and when she explained what the card was for (cause her friends asked) her friends proceeded to go, "Oh, we don't have customer cards at the places that us poor people shop, like Target and Forever 21." in a very sarcastic manner.

The most uncalled for, IMO, was not about clothes per se but just a really snide comment. My sister was at her friend's house for dinner, (the same friend who made the comment about Target/F21), and over conversation my sister mentioned that there's this bakery in north county that has really good cookies. Her friend's father then replied in a very demeaning and sarcastic manner, "I'm sorry we all can't hop in our $40,000 BMW, and drive 40 minutes just to get a cookie like you can." Which, between adults that comment wouldn't have been as insulting, but between a 50 year old man and a 17 year old girl, it takes a new level, especially when the comment was uncalled for, and how talking about a cookie turns into an insult.

i get the 'how much did you pay for that?' followed by 'i would never pay that much for a bag.' i feel its a back handed insult. :s

Well, I like to repsond to statements like that as:

"Well, not all of us are comfortable carrying junk"

sit back and lurve the look on their faces when they realize what you just said:biguns:
