Katierose- looks like from your pic that you have some pretty nice charms! Do you (or anyone reading this) by chance have the original safe charm (i.e. from a JC or department store?) I have a question about it

Thanks

Oh, this is embarrassing! I typed in "safe charm" before I registered, but I guess I did not scroll down enough :blushing:

I received a safe charm from ebay recently that does not feature the mechanism on the inside of the door, and was concerned about its authenticity. Now I realize it is not authentic

Thanks so much for your help

Hard to judge from the one photo, more photos including a photo of the inside would help.
Mine does have the LE 2008 tag, but if this one came from the outlet it may have been one of the ones made for the outlet and it wouldn't have the LE tag.
If it doesn't close correctly, or stay closed, I'd return it for that reason alone. It's very annoying to have the charms opening whenever they want, especially when they are being worn.
I also recently purchased one that I believe to be fake on ebay. I am new to this forum, and am trying to figure out how to post pictures of the fake egg that I got, so a verbal description is all I have for now.

The one I received is a BAD fake. Compared to an authentic egg, the blue color on the end caps and the green color where the shields are are both different. The chain that the yorkie is attached to is a different gauge, and the length of the chain itself is different.

Also, the rhinestones protrude more, and there is not good definition of the shields. There is not LE tag, but I realize this is not definitive of a fake.

I may be thinking of another fake charm I recently obtained, but the width of the lobster clasp, across where the crown logo is above the clasp opening, is less on the fake. And that's easy to compare with any JC charm that you know to be authentic.

I do not know proper protocol, and would rather not begin my forum membership by outing certain ebay sellers. But, if this seller is also selling BAPE (bathing ape) hoodies (also fakes) then it is the same one I dealt with.

I am about to send mine for a return. The seller insists that their charms are from a jewelry store that went out of business, but I was finally able to get a return address.

I hope you will forgive my inexperience with posting, in case of errors. This is my first detailed comparison, and I hope to post more if I can.

I want to show some comparisons using three of the yorkie w/ egg charms I had. The fake ones (two different ones!) are variously compared side by side with one that I believe to be authentic. Disclaimer: All of these were purchased on ebay. However, I have done some research and believe one of the eggs to be authentic.

The photo above shows the fake on the right. The rhinestones protrude more, and the lines encompassing the rhinestones are gold, not silver. You can also see that the J shields are not as broad, and the gold dots/spots are a different color and shape.

Above is an even worse comparison. While the green color surrounding the shields is different than the authentic, this fake egg looks like it isn't even trying to match. Moreover, the middle of the egg closure is not as precise as that of the authentic one.

This photo shows the discrepancies between the yorkies. The fake one has less definition, and the ring attaching the yorkie to the chain is bigger. The nose and tail differences are pretty obvious as well.

The chain is longer on the fake!

This photo shows the slightly different colors on one of the blue ends. I am embarrassed that my winter hands are so HIDEOUS to look at.
image_zps6533984f.jpg

This is the other (different fake) blue end comparison, which is even more obvious.

There are some other differences, which are not pictured-

One of my fakes has speckles inside, like the original. The other is just plain off white. The diameter of the lobster clasp is thinner on one of the fakes (the diameter I am referring to is right near the opening, across the crown logo on the clasp.)

There is brassiness present in both fakes. Neither fake has a limited edition tag, but I know this is not necessarily a prerequisite for being counterfeit.

Axion, good detecting skills!

The fakes can drive us nuts sometimes. When I first started collecting I was after the slice of chocolate cake and received two fakes before finally landing the real one. I got my money back, but that was a good learning experience for me.

One thing we all have to remember is that these JC charms are made with precision and are finely crafted like any better piece of costume jewelry. In my opinion it is this fine work that determines that the JC charm cost more than a $10 charm which is not as finely crafted. Sloppy workmanship is a good sign of a fake because they can't/won't put in the detail that JC does.

I can see you love charms!
Again, welcome to the JC board, and please join us in our charm discussion thread below.

This comparison is for the JC dessert tray charm. I thought for the longest time that I had an authentic charm, until I got a good deal on another for my mother in law, who also collects charms. Both charms came from ebay.

I must say that the fake charm is pretty good quality, and I had no suspicions until I got the second charm and did some research. The bottom of both charms is identical, with no giveaway brassiness. The lobster clasps looks the same, down to the tiny diamond on the oval connecting part.

All photos show the authentic charm on the right.

Above, you can see that the silver rhinestone-studded dessert on the second level has bigger rhinestones than the fake. The setting on the neighboring light green dessert (rhinestone) is different as well. You can see that the lowest level chocolate has thicker whitish topping on the fake.

The photo above shows that the chocolate dessert (eclair?)on the second level is a different chocolate brown color. There is a sprinkling of rhinestone topping on the eclair, which has a completely alternate conformation on the fake. The fake has no pink rhinestone at all, which is present toward the center of the dessert tray on the original eclair.

You can observe the variable setting on the pink rhinestone dessert on this second level.

Likewise in this photo, there is a good view of the green desert on the third level. You can see that the fake has some sloppy paintwork.

*This photo appears as though the pink rectangular rhinestone dessert on the top level is in a different position, but that is not the case. Moreover, both charms seem to be tilting, but that is just my bad arrangement.

This last photo shows the color differences between the yellow desserts on the third level. Furthermore, the rhinestone arrangement is markedly altered.

Well, I hope this comparison can help others to not fall into the same trap that I did. I have seen so many high priced dessert tray fakes on ebay. Unfortunately, it is far too late for me to return my fake, which was purchased last year.

If you note any discrepancies, please let me know.

This authentic v. fake comparison is for the JC treasure chest charm. The fake treasure chest charm is actually pretty good, and I would have bet money that it was the authentic one, until I did some research.
Disclaimer: These charms were both bought from ebay.

The first difference in the photo above is seen on the inside of the lid. In my opinion, the authentic charm lid (L) actually looks brassier than the fake. Also on the lid, differences in the script are apparent. The authentic charm has bolder lettering than its fake counterpart, and the banner's shape is not consistent.

Likewise in this photo, the lid appears higher on the fake (R). I measured them, and they are actually the same height. The reason the fake lid seems higher is because the nails/tacks which hold the gold "straps" protrude more. This is especially apparent on the left side of the open lid.

If you haven't noticed yet, the most remarkable alteration observed in this photo is in the treasure area. The crown is set at a completely different angle and direction, and is brighter gold on the fake (R).

The preceding photo shows the variations in the trunk bottoms. The authentic charm (R) has thinner and more even gold edging. The fake edging seems thicker in some areas, especially at the top/front of the trunk.

This photo focuses on the lock differences. The keyhole in the authentic charm (R) is a little wider and more pronounced than on the fake.
cb354ba8a8a358ceb79363e008e33b84_zpse82816c6.jpg

In this photo, you can see that the fake (L) charm lid does not open as wide as the authentic lid. However, I am not certain that this effect indicates a lack of authenticity.

The reason I have included this photo is to show how the handles differ. The authentic charm's handles (R) are much shorter than those on the fake charm. Sorry that my authentic charm has damage on the handle shown, as it is distracting.

Below is an even better picture of the handles:

08f28d05c33f0399e000488f87b220b7_zps46cfcfec.jpg

The photo above shows the details of the jewel placements. Aside from the striking crown misplacement on the fake (L), you can observe that the light purple/amethyst jewel is rotated relative to the authentic counterpart.

And, the big pink oval at the front of the chest actually touches the front panel, only in the authentic charm (R). The arrangement of the coins is inconsistent as well.

In sum, if you have to make a snap decision about whether an item is a good deal (e.g. a BIN item for a great price on ebay), look at the crown placement, then the JC lettering on the inside of the trunk.

If the photos don't show the inside, you may not have much to go on, other than the protrusion of the tacks or the keyhole on the lock.

Finally, keep in mind that while there is only one authentic JC style of a specific charm, sadly there may be more than one variation/fake created!

Hello everyone! I was told this was not an authentic flower pot charm. Hope it helps someone from not buying.
