Whoever is always pushing to make counterfeits into planters...Want a watering can to match?? (Not a Coach, but I had to do a double take and take a picture as proof!)

Some studs and sequins would make it extra special. :graucho:

Thanks Whateve!!..I know I shouldn't have bid on it..I'm weak today..and I'm getting to the bottom of the pile!! I'm hoping I'll get that spot gone!! scrub-a-dub dub &lots of elbow grease.
.ya never know.. night night!!
You're welcome!

Whenever I mention the great deals you ladies find, DH always says "you're not buying anything, are you?"

yes!!..I would like to add that you must do your own research and write your listings in your OWN Words..Do not copy & paste listings from other sellers, do not EVER EVER Use other sellers photos.. and do not ever ever ever steal other sellers WORDS!! Good Luck to you....

So...Occasionally, and everyone does this, you use some of the same words because they are a good way to describe something in that product line -- plus -- if you aren't an expert at something....like me with purses.....I assume that others know the correct words. So, as long as my listing is different why can't I use the same words. Couldn't you consider it a compliment too? It's not like it's an essay in college, it's an Ebay listing. I guess it's how you look at it and how sensitive you are. ;)

Putting something in your own words is kind of like a backup so you don't get into trouble with eBay. What if you don't read something all the way through, and the seller has a return policy you don't agree with or if you copy and paste somebody else's words and there's a flaw in the bag that they mention but you miss it? A lot of sellers also don't know the correct names for bags, and that's how the wrong names keep getting perpetuated.
Sure, it's not like we're turning in college essays here and "everyone" does it (I personally don't), but just because everyone's doing it doesn't make it right. If you get pulled over for speeding, a cop isn't going to accept the "everybody's doing it" excuse. That being said, eBay typically sides with buyers if there is a dispute. If there is any hole in your description of the bag, you're most likely going to be found liable if the buyer says that you misrepresented something.
Copying and pasting somebody else's words or pictures is a VERY touchy subject here.

How it's looked at? Just plain dishonest. If you need any information on a purse, why not ask the experts at the Forum? Seems like it would be more accuate than info from another seller who might not have much experience.

I just learned about the purse forum. Okay so not everyone does it. Generally, I do more research then just eBay. I understand you can't trust all the facts that are listed. I actually enjoy doing all the research. Coach is just really confusing b/c it isn't clear and I had some older purses. I had a bunch of Native American jewelry and I loved doing the research on all the stamps and different artists ect.
Most the time I use someone else's posts for guides so I don't leave anything out. Or if I can't think of what something is called ie: Trigger clip.

Amen to that! Unfortunately there are a TON of sellers who make major mistakes in their descriptions of Coach items because they've been reading the wrong online Guides or because THEY copied incorrect information from someone else's listing. Every day we find listings where someone has misidentified the style of an item, or doesn't know how to read a Coach serial number to find out when it was made or the right style number (there are a lot of bags being descibed as Vintage, Bonnie Cashin, 1960s or 1970s vintage, etc, that are nothing of the sort).

Someone making that kind of mistake is setting themselves up for a SNAD claim when a buyer finds out that the bag they bought isn't anywhere near as special or rare or old or valuable as the seller claimed. Why take the risk of p1$$ing off a customer who'll file a claim with Ebay or browbeat you into giving her a partial refund? It isn't worth the agro AND the seller that the description was "borrowed" from can report it to Ebay and get your listing pulled since it violates Ebay's Images and Text Policy:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/image-text.html#reporting

"Policy overview

We don't allow our members to use images—including photos and other pictures—or text they didn't create themselves. The only exception to this policy is if the owner of the image or text, its agent, or the law has authorized the member to use the text or images.

You can use images and text descriptions from the eBay product catalog in your listings without violating this policy. The product catalog may include, at our discretion, select seller-generated images or photos from seller listings. Unless the seller opts out of this program, the inclusion of seller-generated photos in the eBay product catalog and the use of catalog content by eBay sellers in their eBay listings is authorized under the User Agreement.

If you choose not to use photos or product descriptions from eBay's product catalog, you must take your own photos and write your own descriptions. This will help you avoid the risks of using someone else's pictures or text, and you won't need to worry about getting permission from any third parties. Learn more about adding photos to your listing and writing a good title and description.

Make sure your listing follows these guidelines. If it doesn't, it may be removed, and you may be subject to a range of other actions, including limits of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account.

Since you've already been lectured on the risks of mis-describing something for which you've copied a description, I'll lecture you on how it feels to be the victim of someone else's plagiarism, whether they've copied my description/text or stolen my images.

I'll tell you right off the bat that NOT "everyone does it!"

As a seller, I've spent years developing a "style." I format my listings a certain way, not just to make it easier to read but to include all the pertinent details in a concise and accurate way. I describe my items in my own words, put the details and information in a certain order, take my own measurements and write my own terms as far as returns, where I ship, payment types I accept, etc.

For my pictures, I use the same photographing style, background, various pictures of all sides of the items, etc. It can take 2 or 3 dozen shots to get the 8-12 clear, well-focused pictures that show what I need to prove condition and authenticity to my buyers. Then there's editing, cropping, uploading to a photohosting site and finally actually listing the item.

And all that work described above can take an hour (or more) per listing.

Why would I approve of someone taking advantage of my hard work, time and experience and take the easy "copy and paste" route? While I'm flattered that someone likes my listing, I'm not flattered by their infringement.

I apologize for the long lecture but I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see my work in another seller's ebay (or Bonanza, Listia, iOffer or other site) listing. And when they say, "pictures don't do the bag justice," that just adds salt to the wound!

If you want to be a successful seller, you need to do your own work and develop your own style.

Hope everyone is great.
I just received a bag I was looking forward to re-habbing and it came with another purse's strap. Nickel grommets for a brass hardware bag. :shucks:
Figured I should have the whole thing verified here since I missed it (listing pictures were meh and I wasn't sharp enough).
Any advice on what to say to the seller in addition to authentication will be greatly appreciated.

AMEN!!!! and thank you BB for writing exactly what I was going to say!! As the victim of "WORD THEFT" there is not one iota of flattery involved..I felt violated..Not only did the thieves copy &paste my listings but they copied our STORE POLICY..return policys and other info that is reflective of what we sell and in no way reflected the items in their store..
Also, I sell everything from native american jewelry to American Girl Doll clothes(kill me!) to bizzaro hard to find vintage items..and I research it to death..I have even written listings and asked more knowledgeable sellers to comment with additional info..sometimes you just can't find a hallmark..or its so worn down on a piece of jewelry..you need help, so ebay sellers have emailed me and given assistance!
I have reported thieves of my work..and I consider my writing my work..it comes from my heart, and it takes a lot of time!! I have also confronted thieves that were stealing my pics & words and selling a non rehabbed bag of a different style, and at least one seller was selling a fake bag! If a buyer believes that was MY listing, what does that do for my reputation & credibility??
So..thats all folks..I YAM WHAT I YAM....CHEERS!! SHERI
