I found this purse in my grandmother's attic. It's from the 70s or 80s ( even an old 13 cent stamp inside) and is all leather- it is a " new york" bag and the new york creed matches up ( hard to read in the pic I know) There is no lining- and It's in need of serious clean up, but I wanted some help in finding out if it was authentic or not. I know that they did fake bags in the 70s/80s SO i was hoping for any input. Thanks Also the zipper is talon brand and heavy duty...View attachment 2649550

I think it's genuine but don't have any information about it, and the few catalogs I have from the 70s and 80s don't show it. It looks like it may have been the original version of the Legacy Satchel #9163 that was made in 1999, and the strap mountings are the same as a 70s-era tote I've seen but that's all I can tell you.

Edited to add - I found a few pictures of what might be your bag. You didn't post measurements (which are always a big help with vintage bags BTW) but if yours measures about 14x11 inches this may be the same bag. There's also a similar bag in Coach's Archives. It's just filed as a "60s-70s-era satchel" in my photo files.

Maybe this will be helpful. On Debi's website she highlights a bag, that looks a lot like this bag, as a vintage Flight Bag from the 60's-70's. It preceded the Skinny Flight and succeeded the earlier Men's Flight Bag. http://www.sacsmagnifiques.com/2014/05/throwback-thursday-vintage-coach-flight.html

(I wish I had a grandmother with an attic full of treasures!)

It has B on the round metal thing, on the sides of where the pocket opens. I will look for holes where it could come loose. Anything else I should look for? I know a few people have these in their collection...

Sorry, as I said I'm not experienced with those styles.

The B on the frame means Branson Manufacturing. They made the kisslock frames for Coach but also for other makers too so you can't use that to authenticate a bag, no matter what some vintage Coach "guides" claim. It's just like YKK zippers, they don't really prove anything.

You''ll probably have to wait for someone who's more experienced with early vintage. Or you can try posting at the Vintage Clubhouse in the main Coach forum:

Hi ladies,
Can you experts please take a peek at this one for me? Many thanks!

Please wait for opinions on the bag in question from seller: allred1992

My comment concerns the seller's history, which is why we have a posting format which includes the seller ID.

She has sold multiple lots that included (at least) 1 fake Coach in each:

In this listing, the light blue checkbook holder is fake:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-Of-13-W...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

And in this listing, the optic signature wallet is fake:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coach-DNKY-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

$_12.JPG

She actually sold that fake listing three times:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coach-DNKY-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coach-DNKY-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I don't recommend sellers who mix fakes into lots in order to get away with the sale of counterfeit items. JMHO.

Thank you so much for that info....my sister is interested in it but my advice to her will be to move on....I abhor those who sell fakes as well!

Ugh!! Here's further evidence of why (IMO) allred1992 should be avoided.

This is a current lot listing, again with a fake Coach in the lot. Notice that in this listing, she (purposely?) left "Coach" out of the title:

I'm not completely sure about that one. There are small differences in the serial number stamping between that one and another E9C- serial but I don't know if that's enough of a problem to be concerned about. The stitching on the strap worries me a bit too, it doesn't look as precise as it should.

Can you post a photo of the back of the turnlock plate, the part that's on the leather tab? And is the back of the main part of the turnlock visible inside the front pocket?

Here's why I'm worried - the top pic is of a genuine bag, same plant, just a month earlier than yours. Next is yours, and last is one that I think may be fake. The second and third creeds and serial numbers were stamped with the same creed and serial number stamps, and all the fonts in both stamps are different than the first photo.

While it's possible that one plant may have been using two different sets of stamps, it would be unusual. But Coach made their own rules, which is why I'm not comfortable saying yours is fake.

I wasn't entirely sure what you were looking for so I included a few.

The leather is nice and soft but I'm afraid I'm not experienced with vintage bags!

I have another bag to authenticate, found today while thrifting after work.

Item: I *think* it's a Lunch Box Zip Style #9991
Seller: Local GW
Comments: It measures about 9" wide, 7" tall and about 3.5" deep. Drop length is 23" but adjustable. The leather feels right but is in need of some serious TLC. Going by the creed, the bag was made in 1996.

Here's the pics!

OUCH.

The first picture shows the back of the turnlock assembly covered with leather. The back is usually left uncovered on genuine Coaches since the turnlocks are designed to be able to be replaced by the bag's owners if they break, and you can't do that with the back part covered by leather.

The third picture showing the back of the turnlock "plate" also shows small indentations that the 4 prongs are set into. Unfortunately genuine Coach turnlocks don't have any indentations there. The prongs are also too short to be genuine.

I'm including a pic of a genuine City Bag showing how the back of the turnlock should be visible.

Sorry, both problems point to your bag being counterfeit.
