Coach's picture of a 1980s-era stamping machine seems to confirm that. That's definitely a large unattached piece of leather in the photo.

Thank you, so much for posting the photo of the stamping machine. :reading: and learning all phases of the manufacturing process is fascinating to me. Maybe I should pick up a copy of The Factory.

Boy, the photo illustrates perfectly how easy mistakes can happen, but more importantly how precise, consistent, and accurate the stampers have been over time given how many bags have been produced.

(ETA: When you have a moment I posted an ID query on the ID This Coach thread.)

Thank you for the heads up!

I'm thinking I might try and look around for another challenging rehab elsewhere...or I might chicken out and just snag an easier City Bag rehab project I'm currently watching instead. LOL
I'm done with challenging! My beige soft satchel isn't going too well either. I'm staying away from light coloured bags that need a lot of work and sticking to black and brown that just have a few issues!

I bet there's heaps of safety equipment on the stamping machines these days too! You probably can't get your fingers any where near as close as shown in that pic!

I was so surprised to see what happened to the crescent. I rehabbed a bag like this one. I think mine was in worse condition than this one, and it didn't fall apart in the bath. It was very sturdy. The leather never really softened up very much. I probably would use different products now.
I have a bag exactly like that one. I have never worn it, I know it needs to be rehabbed but I have been very hesitant to start. The leather is very hard. You can tap on it, it sounds like a drum! Does that mean it has dry rot? I remember someone quite a while ago mentioned that they had a very dried out bag and they slathered it with Blackrocks or something before dunking it just in case. I am dreaming that?

Mine wasn't hard it was quite floppy and really filthy in the places where it broke up. It sounds like a good idea to see if you can soften it up before dunking. I wouldn't use Black Rock because it contains carnauba wax. You need something that will be absorbed into the leather like Leather Therapy.
Should we look to see if any of us own the bag with that particular serial number?:graucho:

How cool would that be! We need eagle eyes to see the number. I can only make out 198- ?60 and we can't see the last digit.

Comment: Interesting serial number?
I remember this seller having a fake bag similar to this listed before but the colors looked different. I wonder if this is the same one with different pictures.
