Hello everyone, this is an older Coach bag I was given yesterday. It might seem like black that lost its color over the years, but it's actually a very dark navy blue. It doesn't have a creed, I assume, because functionally it's more like a wristlet, although a purse-like one. There's a tiny embossed Coach logo that you can't see unless you pull the kiss lock down, maybe 3/4" long. And the hangtag chain has tiny words "beau chain" engraved on the fastener. The kiss lock frame is covered with the same navy leather. Does any of you experts know what it is? I saw a couple of similar ones selling on eBay, although not the same, and they're claimed to be from "Bonnie Cashin era", but I'm always skeptical of those claims. Let me know if the couple of pictures I'm posting is enough, and thanks!

P.S. The top doesn't have an opening so there's just a seam there.

Wow! This is wonderful! The reason it doesn't have a creed is because it was made before Coach used creeds! It really is a Bonnie Cashin, probably made in the 60s. The chain actually says "bead chain." I've seen similar bags but I don't recall one exactly like this. I bet there are B's on the hinges of the kisslock.

Thanks, Whateve! So it is true that one man's trash is another man's treasure, because the person who gave it to me was just happy to get rid of it :-) I looked closer, and you're right, the engraving on the chain says "bead chain", not "beau", it's just that the D is a bit smudged. And yes, there are tiny Bs on the hinges of the kisslock - if you didn't mention it, I probably would have not even looked. Thanks again for pointing it out, Whateve! (OT: I was so sick of autocorrect in my tablet endlessly changing "Whateve" to "Whatever", I went inside its dictionary and changed it. But now every time I need "traditional" spelling, I have to do it manually LOL)

You're welcome! I need friends like that!

LOL, I'm sorry about my name! Usually when I create an account somewhere I try to come up with something meaningful, but when I joined tpf I just wanted an authentication and didn't want to take the time. I had no idea I would never leave!

Hi everyone,
This bag looks odd, can someone authenticate?
Thrift store find. I don't know the style name.
Serial no. B9P-9087
The last 4 numbers look like a different type style from the rest, and I've never seen a key fob on the inside of a bag before.
Thanks!

Really? I've never seen one in that color - hope you're going to post it here so we can see! And it's always a good idea to have it authenticated anyway, especially when a bag is an unusual color.

Here is the Janice in yellow/gold. I chose the pic that best represented the true color. It needs work, but it's a nice bag. I hope it's authentic!!

The creed pic doesn't capture the color well.

OMG this is gorgeous. What a great friend. Congratulations.

I don't think I have good news.

We talked about 2 other J5L- serial numbers recently, and someone also asked about one at the Ebay Purses Board.

The first creed pictured below is from a genuine bag made in the "L" plant in September of 1995, the "J5" part of the serial prefix. Not only does it match other bags we've found with that number, but in the upper left you can see the first two letters of "DONATED" that Coach used to stamp in bags donated to charities for use or resale.

The second creed is supposedly from the same plant, month and year but is very different. I don't believe it's genuine.

Compare both of them to yours, same serial prefix. I'm posting it right below the others. Look at the differences in the fonts of the serial number, and the thickness of the border around the creed, among other details. BTW, how many buckle holes are in each end of your strap, and is the hardware brass, and are the buckles stamped Solid Brass on the undersides? Another problem is that I've never seen a genuine 1995 Janice's in Yellow. Be VERY careful about buying classic or vintage leather Coaches in unusual colors.

I'm sorry, but there's a good chance yours isn't genuine. I hope BeenBurned and Whateve will also take a look.
