Hi alansgail and Sheri, thank you for sharing your experiences! My initial impulse was to message the seller directly and hope for a positive encounter like alansgail's, but i have also been following the threads about confronted sellers turning nasty like Sheri says. I wouldn't know how to handle a situation like that.

I felt distinctly snitchy when i decided to report because, who knows, maybe this seller made an innocent mistake; there are some remarkably nice fakes around and few people are as experienced and sharp-eyed as our experts here. But it's done and i feel glad that i didn't just let it go.

I wonder what happens next though. That listing is still up.
My thought is that you can only appeal to someone's sense of decency. I know if I was unaware that I was selling a fake and someone brought it to my attention I would be grateful and try to educate myself. I can't be alone in thinking like this so I think it's worth it to reach out and let the seller know if they are selling a fake.

That's because you're an honest person.

Sadly, many on ebay, Etsy, Poshmark, Listia, and other trash sites know exactly what they're peddling and they don't appreciate being called out.

Although I'm not sure how other sites handle it, but be warned that ebay's messaging system isn't intended for the purpose of notifying members that they have a violation in their listing. They will and do naru people for "misuse of the messaging system." They advise that you use the "report" button to report fakes.

I'm not trying to preach but I do know of people who were suspended for doing just that and I'd hate to see it happen to you.

I would feel confident about purchasing from someone like you, alansgail, particularly because i would know that honest mistakes would be sorted out jointly and fairly.

BeenBurned, i didn't know that about ebay messaging; thank you for pointing it out. I suppose it's not a bad thing for ebay to channel all fake-reporting straight to themselves, but it would be nice to feel assured that they will take appropriate action. I haven't had the experience myself, but there seem to be quite a lot of instances of reported fakes resurfacing.

There are a few sellers I feel comfortable telling if I feel they have a listed a fake. These are people I have dealt with before or people who have previously asked to have things authenticated on the forum. In fact, I just got a thank you note from an ebay seller for warning them rather than reporting.

I have contacted sellers to ask a question about a bag that I suspect is fake, eg can you confirm that the serial number is xxxxx then replied to their reply with a link to the fakes list if its on there, or saying that TPF found that its fake. The honest seller will reply with a thank you and then remove the listing, the dishonest generally doesn't reply so then I report them.

Both are authentic. I really like the court with the nickel hardware. The brown one is called a Soho basket bag, but I've also seen it called a Soho small basket or bucket.

(Another) lovely bag, JOODLZ. How's the shelving coming along? You're going to need a warehouse like Tetondeb soon!

Please post the link to her 'baby sister'

OMG...can't wait to show this to my hubby!!! My shelving looks like doll-house furniture compared to this, but will serve my purposes. And there are lots of empty spaces :) Still a work in progress :)

I really only bought it because no one else bid and it could be shipped free with the Court bag. And of course, another little rehab project to keep me off the streets!

There are many opinions about all of this...
I can tell you that I would be extremely grateful if I listed a fake bag and someone let me know. I personally think it is a thoughtful thing to do.
As far as ebay's policy I cannot imagine them reprimanding people for conversations. It's freedom of speech, unless you harass someone and/or they tell you not to contact them you are doing nothing wrong. (As long as you don't make yourself the "fashion police" :police: and spend all day contacting offenders).
EBAY, was started with the original idea of people from all over the world connecting in a friendly marketplace environment. I know they are trying to be more like Amazon, but I personally think that is a shame to lose that flavor. :dothewave:
That's my two cents for what it's worth.

I am going to slip in here because I want to express my thanks to both “whateve” and “Hyacinth” for taking the time to verify my two Coach bags (Station and City bags) as genuine. That is great!

The Station Bag I purchased at the Salvation Army thrift store for the tiny price of only $2. It is a sturdy thing, and draws quite a bit of attention from women and men. They like it--really like it! Maybe it is the beauty of the leather, the sleek simplicity of the style, plus the pizzazz of the brass trigger clips. Shoulder or cross body, it’s a terrific bag to carry a moderate amount of stuff.

The City Bag is my workhorse and it was sold to me by a doctor’s wife. She asked for just $25, and it looked like new, so I was wondering later if it was a real Coach.

Appears I did good, eh?

Thank you again very much for looking at my pictures and making judgments.

The honest seller will reply with a thank you and then remove the listing, the dishonest generally doesn't reply so then I report them.

When the seller is dishonest or indifferent, one problem with contacting them directly is going into too much detail about why their bags is fake. We've seen dozens of cases where a seller would be told that the serial number or some other detail showed the bag was counterfeit, and they'd remove the serial and creed photos or the photos of the suspicious area from their listing instead of doing the right thing and removing the listing. Or they'd remove the bag and relist it a few weeks later when they think the Fakes Police (that's us) have forgotten about it.

So the best thing to say if you DO contact the seller (and I dont recommend it either) is to just say that several details show that the bag is fake and they should ask for authentication here or at Ebay's Shes & Purses forum before they put their reputation and even their Ebay selling privileges at risk.
