Never base an authentication on a written statement of what the creed says. Sellers can read wrong or might have typed it incorrectly.

Without a legible picture of the creed, we can't authenticate it.

With regard to "Z" in front of the style number, that designation is stamped on creeds that were sold (by Coach) to discounters. Although Nordstrom Rack is one of those discounters with "Z" bags, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and other discounters also get them.

Threatening to neg a seller because she won't pay return shipping can get YOUR account dinged and possibly suspended.

ALthough SNAD claims require the seller to refund original shipping, return shipping is at the buyer's expense. (Often, decent sellers who take a return as a result of their own error will make the buyer whole but they aren't required to do that.)

It's considered feedback extortion to threaten negative feedback by demanding something that the seller isn't required to do.

Here's the feedback extortion policy:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/feedback-extortion.html

And the pertinent part:

pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/icons/iconNotAllowed_25x25.gif
Not allowed
Examples of Feedback extortion
The buyer can't threaten to leave negative Feedback or low detailed seller ratings (DSRs) if the seller won't:

  • Accept a return and pay for return shipping.
  • Give a full or partial refund for an item.
  • Lower the shipping and handling costs.
  • Refund payment before the buyer ships the item back to the seller.
  • Send an extra item that wasn't part of the original listing. (This doesn't include when a buyer requests a replacement for an item that doesn't match the original item description.)

I have been told by Ebay personnel over the phone that I do not have to pay for return shipping on a fake item, in fact they said that I have the right to send it to the authorities if I want to and still receive my full refund. The buyer is to pay for return shipping if for some reason they do not want the item or if they feel it is not as described, if it is a fake this does not apply. Ebay does not tolerate sellers knowingly selling fake items. I both buy and sell on Ebay and have experienced returns on both ends.

Comments: I've been doing some research and it seems like Coach bags with the serial numbers that start with J8Y, such as the one linked, are often fakes. Would anybody be able to help me out with authenticating this particular bag? Thank you!

We have never seen a proven authentic bag with a J8Y prefix, so I would assume anything with this prefix is fake. Every authentic bag I've seen listed for this style was made in 2001 or 2002, so 1998 is probably too early. The shape of the inside pocket is off. The bag is fake.

The official catalog introduction for that style, # 9715 Legacy Turnlock Companion Flap was in the Holiday 2001 catalog. So the fakers really blew it with that one.

The latest Fake Numbers List still leaves J8Y-, J8H- and J9H- prefixes as "may ALL be fake, they all need to be authenticated here at tPF. They show up in many extremely close fakes, but small mistakes in details have always put it on the "questionable" list. Unless we can find absolute proof that they've appeared in genuine bags, we now have to consider them fake..."

All the evidence points to fake the longer we look, especially since both the 100 percent confirmed-beyond-doubt fakes and the really close maybe-fakes all use exactly the same font and spacing in the serial number (except when they put the 8 in upside-down!) and were probably all stamped by the same machine. Unfortunately some bags with those prefixes may have been authenticated before we had all the evidence available to us now.

The chat about Whitney's (on the Vintage Clubhouse forum) inspired me to look on eBay...and I found this alleged fake. Please verify/confirm.

Item:COACH Whitney Top Handle Shoulder Bag/Purse Brown Leather HO2 9185 Used
Item#:251379271834
Seller:antiques_sandy
Ebay URL:http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-Whitn...rse-Brown-Leather-HO2-9185-Used-/251379271834

My comments: Other than serial number, note the spelling of Coach and grain in the creed. (Coack, Gran.)

Aside from the seller's authenticity disclaimer, I think that bag is okay. It appears to be the angle and perhaps light/flash reflection that distorts the letters.

Thanks BB!

The H02 threw me off, too. But maybe it isn't a two, or is it? (scratching head.) And there is a bullet mark on the upper right section of the leather credo patch...so one would assume it came from Coach. I can see what you mean by how I read a K instead of an H in the word Coach.

I don't know if you tried to customize your post with different font sizes and colors, but there was so much html coding for that in the Reply With Quote box that it actually crashed my browser. If you tried to add those, in the future please keep the html tweaks basic when asking questions. Not only can it cause browser problems, but a post loaded with hidden html is suspicious and might even be blocked or deleted by the forum mods in case there's dangerous or destructive code included.

If you didn't add them and any other problems with html-loaded Reply boxes turn up in other posts, the forum mods and managers need to be notified. It may have been just a temporary glitch.

1 and 3- genuine, early 2000s. I don't have a name for it. They would have been called Framed Wallets, I don't think they were called Madisons or were from any wallet line called Madison

2- genuine

4- genuine, same line as 1 and 3, with no connection at all to Bonnie Cashin

Older accessory styles are hard to name. We don't have style numbers and with some items like the kisslock coin purses, they're such generic styles and were made over such a long period that there's no way to pin them down. Also, a lot of wallets never made it into the catalogs. The few that did often don't show a full set of photos (outside-inside) and it's impossible to know the exact construction details.

(Experts correct me if I'm wrong). When Coach ran out of letters of the alphabet they started using numbers for plants, hence the 2 is for Turkey. The 0 is for the year 2000.

I don't see any problems either. There's an "i" in grain, and the H is just badly lit, like some Ks in "markings" that look like Xs.

Whateve is correct about the serial number.

Hello Hyacinth,

Sorry about the post, I'm not sure what happened! I don't have HTML coding skills, perhaps it was the copy and paste from Ebay site?

Thank you for the reply! ;)

That's strange, all the html shows up in the Reply box but not in the finished Reply, just that huge empty space after your post.

Here are screencaps of just small parts of it, there must be a hundred lines all together including your actual post. It's probably the forum software throwing a snit fit but I've never seen this before. The third screencap shows where your post actually ends and then just the first part of all the extra html that comes after it that probably caused that big empty space.

Weird.
