I am very aware of the rule, I got one of my Brighton signature canvas sunglass cases pulled for that years ago,
which was ridiculous because it was an item that Brighton sold separately, NOT something that came with sunglasses. It was a "stand alone" item, and retailed for about $34 .
I think it's a silly ebay rule - people should be allowed to sell anything THEY OWN,
as long as it's not illegal or unsanitary, etc.
I am more concerned with the abundance of counterfeit handbags and accessories.
I personally don't ever sell hang tags, sleepers etc but at the same time
I sure would not bother to report a seller for selling that type of stuff - if they want to risk it
that's their business - they are not hurting anyone.
Oh, I hear you, and I don't disagree.
It's not as if a "real" hang tag on a fake bag is going to fool anyone who knows anything about authenticity (which is, apparently, the reason eBay uses for not allowing them to be sold.) eBay has its odd quirks (to put it mildly.) If they spent less time worrying about hang tags & dust bags and more time removing actual counterfeits, we'd all be a lot better off.
I have a theory about that, of course (as in, what
don't I have a theory about?) I figure that if they can count small stuff like hang tags & dust bags in their "number of counterfeits removed," they look as if they're actually
doing something to tackle the counterfeits problem. Even if (just to pull a number out of the air) 85 out of every 100
Coach "removed items" are hang tags and/or dust bags, they can still say, "Look, we removed 100 Coach items under our anti-counterfeits program!" That
does make it sound as if they're making progress.
Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I don't disagree with you at all. I was just posting that info about "the rules" because it might be of some help to a seller who doesn't know. It's hard enough to keep a clean record as a seller without getting slammed for dumb stuff like not knowing you can't sell a hang tag.
eBay is not my favorite company, by any means. I stopped selling there a few years ago (after a long stretch, with feedback numbers in the thousands) because I thought things had gotten too bad to make the effort worthwhile. Ha! It's
way worse now, and I give sincere credit to any honest seller who can continue to fight the fight and not go absolutely crazy. I know that I myself just don't have it in me to put up with all of eBay's nonsense.
