Morally you shouldn't have to return fakes. I think you should just be required to show evidence of having destroyed the offending article. However I had one seller insist that I do so and she sent me the return postage and then a full refund including original postage when she received the return. She hasn't relisted so not sure what she intends to do with it. You shouldn't have to bear the costs of shipping either way but I don't think ebay has any strict position on any of this which is unfortunate and not at all surprising.
I have returned nearly every fake I have received (except those I didn't know were fake until it was too late). I have never been told by ebay to destroy the item. In one case, the seller was super nice and told me to just keep it - then she sent me an authentic bag for free because she felt so bad about it. In one case where I returned the fake, the seller owned a thrift store. She told me she was going to keep it for herself but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she sold it locally.

I just wanted to add my opinion about returning or not returning fakes.
I think the reason that ebay does not have a strict rule about this is because basically ebay is not capable of actually determining whether a bag is fake or not based on a buyer's claim.
They are not in the business of authenticating and have no interest in doing so.

As you might know, I recently had a claim against me on ebay for selling a counterfeit bag which is NOT counterfeit. However should I let ebay decide the outcome of this they will surely side with the buyer as they do almost automatically when they really don't know either way if it is fake or not. Why should I lose my merchandise in addition to the insult of having been accused of selling a fake?
This opens the door to dishonest people deliberately claiming something is counterfeit just so they can get a refund AND keep the bag.
If the bag was deemed a fake by the Vero rights owners OR by written documentation from the designer, then I guess it would be a different story. And I would imagine that would only happen with higher end items, like LV, etc.
In that case the buyer could send the bag to a neutral party to be destroyed (on ebay's dime, they make enough money...lol).
What think you all??

Hi Whateve!
I too have returned countless fakes to the sellers who ask for them back, but I do ask them to pay for the shipping. And like you, I have also had very nice sellers who did not want them back and refunded me anyway, or replaced with something else.
Funny thing is, just yesterday I bought a group of four bags on ebay and every single one was a fake!!
You might wonder how I was so stupid to not see they were fakes from the pics, well it was only one photo, and it was a $20 BUY IT NOW sale plus $10 shipping. I knew that the little LV in the pic was going to be fake, and maybe even one more, but I would still be getting a bargain for the two "real" ones. (And I would NOT have made the seller issue a partial refund because I bought it knowing at least one was fake). But I was shocked to find them all phony...lol. The seller sent me a full refund.
Now if only I knew what to do with the mountain of crappola I have accumulated......

My memory may be faulty here, but I seem to recall that years back, eBay had just just a program - stuff was sent to a warehouse somewhere, supposedly to be "destroyed" - but it ended up being sold in bulk from that warehouse!

Anyone else remember this?

I do remember that. I also recall that the company was called liquidation.com and not only did they resell the items knowing they were fake, but many of those items ended up back on ebay!

In fact, if you google liquidation.com, you'll see that they don't have a good reputation.

Wow, that is so interesting! A few years ago, my son tried to get me interested in buying stuff on Liquidation.com to sell on ebay. I watched a few auctions and was amazed at how high things were selling for. It didn't seem like there would be any way to pay that much and make a profit reselling on ebay. It never once occurred to me that the stuff might be fake.

I have also bid on lots that had obvious fakes because I figured the other stuff was still worth the price, or because I really wanted one item in the lot, but I've never ended up with a lot of all fakes! But when I first started buying on ebay, I remember winning two auctions for Coach purses, one for me and one for my daughter. When they came, mine was one of those really poor quality fakes. I had to escalate the case in order to get refunded, and I had to pay to ship it back. Because the quality of the one my daughter got was so much better, we initially thought it was authentic, although it would have been obvious to anyone who knows even a little about authenticating. I didn't realize it was fake until it was too late to dispute it, and it never occurred to me to dispute the credit card charge. Before I discovered tpf, I probably lost more than $300 on fakes.

Could someone please authenticate this Coach Bag?

I have the style number as 8612, which is a polished calfskin *something* - compact clutch might be right.

They've remade several similar styles over the years so I don't know which your wallet is.

ETA: Now that I'm looking at the side-by-side pictures, I'm thinking that you might be correct with the style number. The wallet collection I've posted had patent leather trim. Yours doesn't appear to have that.

This is Coach's 8612:
