Possible to have a Z plant code for US bag?

Hi all -

This is my first post here (but won't be my last), I've been learning a lot from following the threads. I have been accumulating a number of older Coach bags with the intent to clean them up and resell them.

I have a Legacy Zip with #L6Z-9966 under a United States creed. I just realized tonight that all of the other bags I have with the Z plant code state that they were made in the Dominican Republic (they have whacky Z's on them, which is another post). I compared the L6Z bag with another Legacy Zip with # F0D-9966 and they are identical as far as i can tell except for the main zipper pull - the L6Z bag pull is narrower where is connects the zipper.

I have posted photos here - showing the bag, the buckles, the YKK zippers, etc. Any input you can provide would be most appreciated.

I think you have a valid concern, but there's probably no easy answer. The only place I've ever seen a Z code is in bags made in the DR. Besides the questionable plant code there's a problem - several problems actually - with the Coach logo at the top of the creed.

Since there aren't any proven-genuine made in US creeds with Z plant codes I'd have to call it questionable (and you DO know that YKK zippers don't prove a darned thing about authenticity, right?) I'm much more interested in seeing both ends of the zipper and how they're sewn to the bag than in any stamp on the zipper itself.

Does your other bag made in the DR have a buckle that says "Solid Brass" underneath?

Does the brass ring connecting the zipper to the leather zipper pull fit flat against the top of the bag when the zipper is closed, or does it stick up on one side? It almost looks too big for the space it's supposed to fit in. The genuine zipper and pull should look like the one below. (BTW, the Zs are supposed to be wacky on the DR-made bags).

Thank you, Hyacinth. Yes, ma'am. *looking down and poking toe into dirt* I have read your posts pointing out that the "rules" aren't rules at all and do know that YKK zippers don't necessarily mean anything.

My two DR bags (a 4150 and a 9145) have brass hardware and do not have a "solid brass" marking on any of the buckles. Thank you for suggesting that I check that AND the tip on the wacky Zs.

I have uploaded details of the ends of the zippers and the zipper pulls for both of my Legacy Zip bags. I see now that the zipper on the Z bag does not go all the way up into the fold that holds the strap, which it does on the F0D bag. However, the zipper pull on the F0D bag seems too big compared to your photo so I've posted photos of that one and the creed on that bag, as well.

The shape of the zipper pull on the Z bag is wrong. I have never seen a zipper pull on an authentic bag that is that shape or is sewn to a point next to the zipper. It should be squared off like on the D bag. The other end of the zipper looks crude as well. The Coach lozenge on the creed is odd-looking, as Hyacinth mentioned. I doubt the Z bag is authentic.

1- actually the late 1990s replacement for the Basic Bag, called the Mitchell Zip. Looks ok.

2- Nothing in my files for that style but I don't see any problems

3- ok

4- there's one red flag on the Maggie Duffle and a few small things like the leather tab on the zipper pull. Sorry but I can't discuss what the red flag is since I don't want to tell the crooks that also read this forum how to make their fakes more accurate. But that combined with a J8Y- prefix makes me think it's probably counterfeit.
Thanks for your time and eagle eye. I think I figured out the Maggie issue but have pm'd you for clarification. Still trying to learn -- one bag at a time.

What would we do without all you authenticators? Thanks again!

You're a very good observer. :smile1:

We always have to make allowances for wear-and-tear parts like zipper pulls and hangtag being replaced over time, but things like the zippers themselves were always very well-installed and finished off. The zippers should always look as if they fit the bag perfectly and were designed just for that style. Many less expensive fakes have zippers that don't quite fit and look too long or too short for the zipper opening.

While you'll usually find a few obvious fakes or questionable bags, if you check Ebay's current and Completed listings for bags in the same style you'll get a good feeling for exactly how specific parts of a bag, (or wallet, keychain, etc) should look. Bags from the same plant, month and year are the best to use for comparison, but other than the occasional styling adjustment like changing the strap length and design a la Court Bag, Coach didn't make many production changes over the life of a style.

The "Solid Brass" buckles may also be a problem unless they're on very early bags that qualify as "vintage", 20 years old or more. Others at this forum are more familiar with that detail than I but that stamp on a 1990s or newer bag needs a very careful examination.

I'm a little nervous about one detail on that wallet especially since that style is very easy to fake. You can wait for more opinions but I personally would not bid on it. JMO.

Also among other problems I have with that seller, she's also famous among authenticators for not authenticating items properly, and I've seen quite a few fakes and incorrectly described items being sold through EDROPOFF

BTW, please read the very first post in this thread for the correct format to use when asking for authentication.
