I was looking on ebay for fobs and stumbled upon this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-Leath...?pt=US_Unisex_Accessories&hash=item3f15d84c10

I have no interest in buying it, but is it fake? It doesn't look as well made as other fobs & there is no little coach tag on the key ring.

It's authentic and is called leather surf flower fob. The style number is 1606 and the tag, original box and the item are exactly as they're supposed to be.

This listing is for cherry. It also came in pink and blue.

Note that not all keychains have hangtag lozenges.

This one I do want to buy, but I have never seen it before, is this one real?

It's genuine. Not all keyrings have hangtags. This is an older one from at least 8 years ago and the name and style number on the box is correct.

This is also one of the very few GENUINE brown-and-white boxes made by Coach. A large number of fake keychains come with a box that has the same shape and colors (sometimes with the colors reversed) but it's two pieces instead of the genuine one-piece with what I call the cough-drop box type opening at each end. The fakes often have fake labels that don't match the style of the keychain. The two-piece rectangular brown-and-white boxes are always fake, and 99.9 percent of the time the keychains they come with are fake too. Note the fake labels in these photos.

Keep in mind that in rare cases a seller will send a genuine keychain in a fake box, but almost never the other way round, since the genuine boxes were only used for a very short time and Coach discontinued them about the time the genuine Surf Flower keychain was made, about 8 years ago. Any kind of rectangular gift box is a huge red flag.

Here are a few examples of fake boxes and keychains.

I haven't found any other bag with this style # though I have seen it before I am sure. reminds me of a Hadley? (the year 2000 Wayback machine is playing hard to get tonight.) It's a Thrift shop find and the creed is hard to photograph

The style # etc on creed is JOD 9817 I believe.

The Dimensions are : 7.5"H x 8.5"W x 2"D. Again, sorry my Image shack program has a perverse need to put the Creed patch sideways...it's uncanny.

I just bought a keychain at the factory store in a box. Normally you don't get a box, but they had one in a box and offered it to me. It is a two part generic white box with the identifying information on a sticker on the side. I think the ones you get from Macy's come in a similar box.

Again, the fake boxes are rectangular, 2-tone and 2-piece. I didn't say that Coach didn't make any boxes for keychains and small items, just that they didn't make boxes that met that specific description. I'm surprised that the box from Macy's had a sticker with the information for that keychain

Stores like Dillard's and Nordie's can also use 2-piece gift boxes but those are usually for a specific keychain like last year's Legacy Penguin from Dillard's shown below, and the keychain style number usually ends in the letter B to show that it's a boxed item.
