Hi! I recently jointed tPF and this is my first post. Sorry if the link isn't clickable; I'm not sure I did it right. Would you please take a look at this one:
Item: Coach Legacy Hobo Purse Black

Comments: I'm a newbie, but I'm not sure about that serial number - JHM??

Sorry, "JHM-" is an invalid prefix - please DON'T bid on that bag.

I wish I had some factual information about the exact age of your bag, but I agree with Hyacinth that it's definitely 1970's. - probably mid to later 1970's. I only base my opinion on the very limited information I've been able to glean over the years about when Coach used each particular early creed.

I think (my opinion only) that Coach went through rapid changes after Bonnie Cashin left in 1974 as they scrambled to market their products. They went from the Cashin era "marks" - to a creed - then to a creed with glued on serial number- then to a creed with the serial number stamped as part of the creed.

The Coach employee who dreamed up the "serial number" concept had to be a marketing genius. How impressed women were to have the "ONLY" bag with that number.

Very nice bag! Beautiful condition.

Good Morning DemRam!
Thanks so much for the additional info about my Slim Satchel - and the compliments!

Do I understand correctly that there were creeds WITHOUT serial numbers that pre-date the ones with glued on numbers like mine? I don't think I've seen one like that!

Thanks again...every tidbit of information I get from all the authenticators is precious!

You're welcome!

The photo below is one of mine that has the creed with no serial number. (The young man who is in charge of the Coach Archives actually bought it when I listed it on ebay).

Since it does make some sense to me, I can only "guess" that the order of the creeds used after Cashin's departure was as follows:

1. Creed only.
2. Creed with glued in numbers.
3. Creed with number as part of the creed stamp.

There was a poster on the ebay boards years ago (she disappeared) who knew way more than I could ever hope to know about that 1970's Coach era. Her "guess" was that Coach was making those creed changes so quickly that the 3 various creeds styles could "possibly" have all been for sale VERY close in time.

I don't do much searching for vintage Coach anymore, but my experience in the past is that the "creed only" and the "creed with glued on numbers" are the more difficult ones to find. Once Coach added the number as part of the creed, they used that style for a long, long time - and you don't have to look very hard to find those.

please authenticate this bag i bought but haven't received yet:
item: hobo vintage

seller:073193gt
comments: it has no creed, only a metal tag. i know that tags were used early on. do you know the approximate age, whether it's authentic, and what the real name of the bag is? i'm curious whether it's easy to just collect these metal coach tags and affix them to old bags, or whether they are generally authentic? thanks so much

The bag certainly appears authentic, though I have no idea of the name. As far as "collecting" those metal plaques - Anything is possible - but the bag looks like Coach quality from that time frame.

Coach DID use the little black/white metal plaque during the Cashin era. I have a bag with that same mark that was dated to 1967 by the Cashin Foundation.

I'm not sure IF they continued to use that same mark after she left - so there is maybe a 50-50 chance it's a Cashin design, but there is no way to be sure. The Cashin Foundation doesn't seem to be authenticating any more.

Maybe someone else has a name or more information.

Sorry I can't help, it doesn't look familiar but could be genuine.
