Won this this morning. Didn't get a chance to post here first unfortunately. I see this item on the dept store websites but not the Coach site. Fingers crossed! Thank you!

Item: COACH CHELSEA PATENT LEATHER CLUTCH
Item number: 170681386553
Seller: booksandmore901

ETA: The description lines up with the clutch but not with what is pictured...the flap bag is what is in the picture.

ETA #2: The same item with the same photos and description was just listed by the same seller. I don't know what to make of that...

Are you the winner of the first auction?

I have no idea whether the bag is authentic because the pictures are awful! Although I don't see obvious problems, she should definitely practice getting clearer pictures.

My guess is that the first listing (listed and sold wihtout a reserve) was relisted because she was unhappy with the selling price. But that's probably because of the lousy pics.

Unless the seller can get clearer photos, I wouldn't recommend bidding on this item.

Thank you!

Yes, I was the winner. I shouldn't shop when I'm not thinking clearly

The seller told me the creed says D1193-17854. The style number lines up but I'm not sure if that is when the bag would have been manufactured?
Don't fret yet. The bag might be okay and the seller might have 2 of them. (If she got a great deal, she could have purchased multiples hoping to strike it rich.)

The style is a new style so having been made in April, 2011 isn't unreasonable.

If you haven't paid yet, please request a clear (macro) picture of the creed. Using the macro function takes practice and to add difficulty to the mix, photographing patent leather is also tricky.

Again, it's probably okay and you probably wouldn't have gotten such a low priced deal if the pictures were better but for your own peace of mind, get that creed looked at.

Unfortunately NO. Coach employees have NO experience in telling real from fake, and even less with bags that are more than a year old. In fact they are the last resource I would ever recommend for authentication, except for suggesting that whatever they tell you, the exact opposite is probably the truth. Sorry to be so negative, but we've seen that situation come up a hundred times, and 98 of the times the employee has been completely wrong. The outlet store employees are even LESS experienced and half of them weren't even born when that bag was supposedly made.

There's a big difference between "knowing" something because you sell it and knowing it because you study, analyze and discuss it 10 or 12 hours a day with other experts. The ONLY source employees have is a very limited computer system that only lists the style numbers of the bags made in about the last 10 years - and nowhere near all of those either.

In fact, Coach's legal "experts" are just as clueless. (BTW, I checked the bag when photos were still available online and it's completely genuine):

In fact right now on Ebay's Shoes & Purses forum there's a post about a poster gravelrd825 who claims to be a former Coach employee who not only repeatedly contacted and harrassed the seller of a GENUINE bag, but who even reported it to Ebay as fake. The post will probably get gutted or removed but here's the link. Remember some posts may already be missing:

Thank you for your informative replies, Hyacinth. I really appreciate the time you spent educating me about Coach, in general, this bag specifically. I appreciate the fact that you found a picture of what it is supposed to be/could be. If you ever run across a Chauncey, you'll have to let me know. I was genuinely surprised that no other opinions were put forth, given the multiple regular participants on this forum. But I imagine there are specific "eras" where some items are more familiar than others.

Keep up the good work. Looks like this forum has helped out a lot of people.

Some people only feel comfortable commenting on bags they are familiar with and/or have owned. But usually there is someone here that can authenticate for every bag, no matter the year.
I am not considered an authenticator in the least, but I do try to help out with bags I have owned or are familiar with, due to having been through (owned) over 75+ Madison and Poppy items. :D
This forum is priceless in the knowledge it contains, and by the lovely ladies who give their time to help us out.
I know I am very thankful, because without them I wouldn't know anything about Coach, LOL!

If it's 13x7 inches it's a Slim Satchel Compact, although it may have been called a Handle Clutch during the earlier part of its production, style number 9425 was called by both names. DemRam might know. It's probably from between the mid-70s to about 1987.

Just wanted to be sure this is authentic as the seller says its a newer style, but it doesn't appear to be one to me. It looks vintage but I don't have a clue so I am hoping you wonderful ladies can tell me. TIA

Actually it's neither since it's fake. The Coach stamp on the front is fake and so is the fake creed and the fake serial number inside. I hope you didn't buy it, it's junk.

And there are other problems as well. That serial number is also in my list of fake Coach serial numbers, you might want to read and bookmark the page - 3 posts:

It's fake. The style wasn't made and the serial number on the creed (that wouldn't be on a similar wallet) is a well known invalid serial number.

This post from Hyacinth's answer's to authenticity questions specifically mentions that serial number as being one of many known fakes. http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-sh...enticity-questions-94198-37.html#post18503288

Thank you.:smile1:
You're welcome.
