You are correct, the bag actually is black when the Coach store associate used their cleaner and moisturizer on a portion of it. Thank you so much for your response. As I told NoShowPolish the Coach store was awesome, they gave me a strap and leather and silver hangtags, and I bought their cleaner and moisturizer to restore the entire bag. You all are a great resource. :smile1:

We need to see photos of the creed stamp and serial number. Maybe if Noshoepolish comes by she can tell you what other areas we need to see.

I'm surprised that a brown briefcase from late 1995 for early 1996 would already have nickel hardware, that seems a bit early. We really need more photos.

Thank you again for sharing your expertise.

You should be able to pull it down enough to get a photo of the creed. I need to see that to authenticate. Can you add some more photos of the back, sides and interior?

Do you have the strap? That is very important for this bag. Most buyers want the strap. Without the strap you may not get as much.

It is a Coach Organizer Briefcase.

If you list it after I can see the rest of the photos, make sure you say whether it is smokefree or not.

Put the hardware against a sheet of paper, try looking at it outside. It is probably brass.

Most Coach employees cannot authenticate Coach. In fact, I sold one of these bags (which I specialize in) last year and the buyer claimed Coach told her the bag was fake. I ended up calling the District Manager.

What kind of strap did they give you?

Why did you think the bag was brown? Did someone shoepolish or dye it?

Depending on condition, they can go for $99-$499 on eBay.

Unfortunately you've listened to information from a source that's totally unqualified to authenticate older Coaches.

Coach store employees have NO training in analyzing creed stamps or serial numbers and NO records of what was and was not available on Coaches made in a certain year or with a certain creed. Your bag even when revealed as Black still has one unexplained problem that makes me question its authenticity, and that is the simple fact that nickel or silver/colored hardware on any color briefcase including Black was not shown as an option in 1995. According to their own catalogs silver hardware didn't come into use UNTIL Fall 1997. Just because a bag has a stamped serial number DOESN'T MEAN IT'S GENUINE, 90 percent of the fake Coaches being sold on Ebay have what appear to be valid serial numbers. Any professional counterfeiter with more than three brain cells can copy a valid serial number.

If you search this forum for instances of Coach employees badly mis-identifying items as real or as fake you'll find that we've discovered that they're probably wrong in about 90 percent of the posted cases. I don't understand why you don't want to post photos of your bag, but since you say you'll keep it and use it yourself, I hope you hold to your word. If you try to sell it there's a possibility you'd be selling a counterfeit item.

DO NOT BUY! With the exception of coach.com and its invitation-only online outlet sales, any site with "coach" in the name sells fakes.

Back to reading the Salearea Guides.

And Coach used a large variety of stamps and fonts, don't ever judge one based on a totally different bag, plant, style or year.
