Item: Navy City Bag, made in the Dominican Republic in 2003
Seller: Salvation Army $3
Comments: Please authenticate thank you, more pics in the next message.

This bag is in terrible shape! Much of the color and edging have gone, it’s filthy, the hangtag is missing, the strap stitching has pulled loose and an extra hole has been punched in the strap!

And while I was photographing it I realized that it has been “touched up” with shoe polish! Yuck! But then I figured, for 3 bucks, what the heck?!

More pics of the navy city bag, thanks again! I was a little concerned by the “X” in the creed. I’ve never had any bags from the DR so I don’t know what to expect, but again – it was only $3! Thank you!

Item: Small coach portfolio case, made in NYC, circa 1980?
Seller: Salvation Army $20
Dimensions: 9.5” tall, 13.25” wide, 3” deep
Comments: I will post additional photos in the next message, please authenticate. It is made in NYC and has the glued-in serial number, does that help to narrow down the date of manufacture? Thanks for you help!

More pics of the small tan portfolio, thank you!

(I'm a real sucker for any bag with an industrial TALON zipper!)

Authentic "Slim Satchel Standard" - Approximately 13 x 9 x 3 - Style 9430.

This is only my opinion - but I believe Coach was making changes fast and often when Bonnie Cashin left in 1974. I think they went from "Creed Wording alone" to "Creed with glued-in Serial Numbers" to "Creed with fully integrated Serial Numbers embossed underneath" - and I think they made those changes in just a few years.

Long way of saying that my best guess is that your bag was probably late, late 1970's, though I have no way to prove it.

Love the zippers too. They were perfect for the indestructible bags of that time.

Edited to add: (I can't help with the City Bag. I just don't know enough about those plant codes)

#1. The bag looks OK, but a straight on, readable photo of the creed would be helpful. I think it says H8C-9455 which would be a "Basic Bag" from 1998, so not really "vintage".

My other concern is this from the description: "there were a couple wear spots on the bottom that I polished....excellent condition...brass zipper and hardware ...cleaned and polished".

My question would be - polished with WHAT? You do NOT want a bag if it's had shoe polish used on it. I would definitely ask the question.

#2. Again, the pictures are sadly lacking in detail, but it appears to be a "Court Bag", style 9870, from 1995.

If buying, always fund your payment with your credit card - just in case there's a problem.

Thanks DemRam,
The first bag will have to go.. I never thought of shoe polish though I've been reading about it many times. I have bought bags before on ebay but i have not done so for the past few years. My ebay skill is sadly lacking. LOL. Still looking to purchase my first coach bag on ebay :)

As for the second bag, the seller sent me a few pictures of the scratches. She also include a clearer picture of the creed. Do you think the scratches can be minimised with leather conditioner?

You're welcome!

The pictures from the seller look fine to me, but I would wait for Hyacinth to comment to be sure.

As far as the scratches, I have had good luck lately with "Leather CPR" (pictured below). It worked much better (than Lexol or Apple Brand) on some scratches in one of my older bags.

I couldn't find it locally, but it's available on ebay, which is where I bought mine.

Good luck!

Thank you, and thanks also for your opinion on the age of the slim satchel standard! They had quite a few nice Coach bags at the SA store yesterday and this was the cheapest one, but I think this one was the gem of the bunch. I love those big heavy zippers!

Besides the strange plant code, do you see any other red flags about the navy City Bag? What is the expected plant code for the DR? It looks like it will be a lot of work to rehab and I'd rather not even try if it's a fake! Thanks again!

It's fake. If you squint really hard while looking at the enlarged creed photo, you can see "Made in Korea".

Hey, I just got a nice little surprise! I thought that the hangtag was missing on the "Slim Satchel Standard" but I've just started working on the rehab and found the hangtag and ball chain inside the slip pocket! I don't mind replacement hangtags but it is always nice to keep the bag as original as possible. And since the color of british tan bags varies with age, it is good that the hangtag is of the same age and color. It is the older type of hangtag that is finished only on one side.
