There are good fakes and bad fakes. The bad fakes can be quickly weeded out b/c they are made with inferior products (vinyl trim, poor stitching) but there are also GOOD fakes, the fakes that fool most people b/c they are made with good leather.

Take it from me! I have (in my possession, until trash day on Thursday) TWO FOACH purses. For years I thought they were the real deal. The style number on them is "off" slightly, but other than that, they are made of good leather and to the non-Coach expert they do look genuine.

Really, unless you yourself purchased the bag AT Coach or an authorized retailer (Macys, Dilliards, etc.) you really cannot be 100% sure on the validity of your bag unless you have one of the experts here cast their opinion.

These women who lend their time to lend opinions and their expertise BLOW MY MIND!
:yahoo:

*And remember, EVERY brand name out there in the world has counterfeits.

Oh, the horror! I'm somewhere between cracking up and horrified - Foach leather!

Yes, I'm completely blown away by the authenticators, such detailed knowledge. I just didn't realize that even the pre-1990s leather (not signature/canvas) was faked... sigh... Most of my vintage coach was either purchased myself, or passed down from friends and family who bought new, but now I know to be careful while looking for a vintage briefcase/attache for dh (he doesn't want a new one, go figure :-)

Yes, all bags need scrutiny. Coach leather has been faked for a long time.

Wow, I had no idea -- I have a bunch of questions now, but will move them to the authenticity discussion thread.

Thanks for the info, and for all the hard work you guys do. And I'm afraid that now I may have to add to that work, as I'm looking for a vintage briefcase, and thought I was safe buying early Coach - but I guess not!

Comments: I found this while browsing, I've never seen a creed like this before, any thoughts? TIA!
That bag is fake and the serial number, B5 834 64 appears to be a new candidate for Hyacinth's list of fake serial numbers.

The following screenshot shows a previous ebay listing item number for another bag with the same serial number. The listing isn't viewable but it shows the item number and the seller got positive feedback from the buyer.

I want to thank all that chimed in. Hyacinth, I have a question for you. I'm a bit confused with the mini bag. Creed says 4927, how did you find a style # of 9825? When I was trying to research the creed before contacting the forum, the most I could come up with was a Sonoma. However this one wasn't listed in there. Is the creed mis-marked? Thanks!
Sue

Because serial numbers from before 1994 are different. Please read my post about Coach serial numbers here to find out why:

oh another question that might be weird. If I did buy one in blue would there be any chance that the colour would transfer onto the unlined leather of my vintage bags? I have been trying to find a neutral brown wallet for that reason but if there isn't a chance of colour transfer I might try for a more exciting colour if I don't win this one.

Wait for other opinions regarding color transfer, but I don't think leather color would transfer to fabric (as long as it hasn't been dyed), but rather, I think it's more common that clothing dyes transfer to light colored leather.

I hope you weren't the winning bidder.

Do not buy from vicmikjon. The bag in the listing you asked about is fake and the seller other fake Coach bags:

You might want to direct the seller here because she needs to be made aware of the illegality of the items she has listed and sold as well as the risk to her ebay account when her listings get pulled.

Just wanted to let you all know that eBay pulled the auction and that I did hear from the seller. He sounds like a guy that made a listing but doesn't have a clue. I did direct him here for any future Coach listings but it sounds like he might be out of the Coach market.

First off, I am so sorry about the coach bag, I am not on Ebay to rip anyone off....that is not my intention at all, never has been and never will be...I will take full responsability and know that I was wrong, I should have known more about coach bags and done more research about them before I started listing them on Ebay. I usually and still sell sports jerseys and know all about them and wanted to venture out alittle more by selling coach bags without doing the necessary homework about them, was a bad idea. Listen, I am not trying to rip anyone on ebay off, I am just trying to sell my products, make alittle money and make my customers happy and satisfied with what I sold them. Too bad for me, they were coach bags, which I do not plan on selling on Ebay anymore, it's too risky and hard to know a real or fake, I can't tell and I am not willing to risk my rep on Ebay anymore.
Again, I am so sorry about the problem, I wasn't trying to rip you off, please believe me or any other of my customers. I told you before that I will gladly refund anyone's money if they are unhappy with anything I sell them, though my feedback is 100 %. Thanks again and take care, please know that I will never list another coach bag again... Dan
