I have a quick question (before I post my pics)....

My first Coach bag was given to me Christmas '99 from my sister. It's a dual-question of authenticity AND the name/id of the bag. Where should I post my inquiry? At this thread or the "Id this Coach" thread?

I really don't want to be a pest, but I'm dying to figure out the name of my bag and I want to make sure the bag is authentic...though I'm 98% sure the bag is the real McCoy, since back then, my sister did have a friend who worked at a Coach boutique, and if memory serves, she bought the bag from her friend.

If there is any question about authenticity, I would post it on this thread first.

You can ask about authenticity AND if the name of the bag is known.

Then, if it's authentic and nobody here knows the name...you can post it on the "ID" thread.

Ok, here it is! (my first time attaching pics, so hopefully I do this properly.)

I received this black bag from my sister as a gift Christmas '99. The black is pretty simple, (did have a hangtag at one time, but I recall I took it off a few years ago to use on another classic bag I bought online.)

The bag measures 9" long by 11 1/2" wide and about 2 1/2" deep. Nothing stands out to me as screaming FAKE, but over the years I've perused eBay to try to find another like it, and I haven't seen another like it (which may just mean that it just wasn't an overly popular style.)

At the time, I recall my sister having a friend who worked at a Coach boutique; so if I recall correctly, she bought the bag from that associate...it would be heartbreaking for me to learn that my first bag isn't authentic, as you can understand....but I have to know...and I also would like to know the name/style of the bag. Thanks in advance. I'm quite new to this forum, and I learn so much every day from all the helpful gals here.

Unfortunately, I have 9960 listed as the style number for the "Day Pack" shown below.

Based on that information alone...that bag can't be authentic.

Wait for other opinions.

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but it's not genuine.

Style # 9960 belongs to a Daypack, which is a type of backpack, with a front turnlock and back straps. I've posted a photo below.

There are several other mistakes such as conflicting or invalid codes in the serial number including the plant code "A" which had been closed for years by the date this bag was supposedly made.

For that bag to be genuine it would had to have been deliberately stamped with incorrect style and plant codes, and at a time when almost all production had been moved out of the US. So unless someone at one of the US factories deliberately sewed and stamped out a few of the last Coaches for friends and family using whatever creed template he could find before the plant shut down for good, it can't be genuine. (And yes, it could have happened, but the chances are slim-to-none).

Wish I had better news, sorry.

Well, I know its never fun to deliver bad news, but I was kinda thinking the same thing, Hyacinth and DemRam!

On a happier note, now I can throw this bag in the garbage and not worry about conditioning the leather next week!

**It kinda stinks that my sister gave me a fake bag, but the leather on that bag is simply amazing...I used that sucker daily for almost 3 years and it still looks good!

BUT, since I'm older and more selective, I don't want this FOACH to rub off on my other bags in my closet...so it's gonna have to go!

ETA: Thanks again ladies for looking at my bag and conducting that research. I guess I kinda always thought the bag was fake, though the quality of the leather always made me second guess it.

Back then, a genuine Coach would have run about $250, and my sister and I have NEVER spent anywhere near that amount on gifts to each other, so when I discovered that she had bought me such an expensive gift...well yeah...I wondered. (And, since this was pre-eBay....I knew her options were quite limited.)

Don't be too hard on your sister. Depending on where she bought it, she may not have known it was a fake.

There are many "real looking" fake Coach leather bags, with nice leather, that are really, really difficult to distinguish from the "authentic" ones. Those older leather fakes were nothing like the ridiculous and obvious ones we see today.

Many who have collected Coach for many years have been fooled. I know I have been.

I am sorry about the bad news, but at least now you know.

Even though this isn't a genuine Coach, it is genuine leather...and its held up quite well for the 10+ years of ownership! It was my very first "really nice" bag, and this is the bag that "unknowingly" started my Coach obsession!

I used that bag DAILY for the first three years I had it; then it soon became too small to use.

Now, I do get all my bags out every spring so I can condition the leather. Last year I noticed that the strap on this bag was in need of repair, so I just wanted to get a confirmation on it.

**Even though its not authentic, I won't tell my sister about this. I know her intention was not to "dupe" me or anything...

Hyacinth? DemRam?

Bag from local antique market. Authentic?

Thank you. :flowers:

item name: Coac Leather light pink wallet
item number: 250763989707
seller name: rgar2486
link:http://cgi.ebay.com/Coac-Leather-li...707?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a62b2d2cb

Does this wallet look genuine? Thanks!
Wallets are a rather "well-faked" category of items in that often, the pictures make the wallets appear "proper" and it's often hard to identify whether they're authentic or not.

In this case, I have several reasons for feeling uncomfortable about this seller and items.

1. Low feedback and no feedback as a seller. (This seller has just 3 feedbacks and all were as a buyer.)
2. Wallet listing has only 2 photos, neither of which is close enough nor clear enough to see details. More pictures are needed and they need to be closer and more detailed. All tags, hardware, paperwork need to be fully shown.
3. All seller's listings appear to be avoiding listing restrictions by misspelling Coach as "Coac."

Although I empathize with sellers' frustration with listing limits, purposely misspelling the brand name is (at best) unethical and I can't recommend a seller who does that. JMHO.
