I was wondering if some of the lovely vintage Coach buffs here could help me authenticate this? Could you also give me an idea of the style name and the date based on the serial number? Also, is there some thread on here or a website that might discuss specific dates according to serial number? I've seen some of you pinpoint your bags to an exact year. Thanks in advance for any and all help!!

Bags made before 1994 are impossible to narrow down to a single year, and the style number wasn't included in the serial number either. The number format changed in 1994 to include that information. There are several posts in the Answers to Authenticity Questions thread that explain how to disect a Coach serial number.

Your bag was probably made between the mid-1970s thru the mid-80s since it has the Made In New York City stamp. Knowing the outside dimensions would help narrow down the style and name but it looks like one of the Slim Satchels. The Large Slim Satchel measured about 13x9x2.5 inches, and theb Compact Slim Satchel was about 13x7x2 inches. I'm guessing it's the Compact version from the proportions of the bag.

The dimensions given are 13 1/2" wide x 7" high x 2 1/2" deep x 3.5” drop for handles. So a Compact Slim? It is indeed authentic then? Thanks so much for your help Hyacinth!

BTW I've been a die-hard fan of Keeping Up Appearances forever!

Wow, thanks for the help...I have been reading and learning a lot. Have you ever checked out the bidding site iOffer.com? It is absolutely FULL of fakes. Must not have any regulations. Buyers beware!

iOffer is a well;known cesspool that's LOADED with fakes of all kinds. A few may look ok but often their photos are stolen from Coach or from legitimate Coach resellers. Anyone who buys a name-brand bag or other item from them has about a 95-percent chance of getting a fake.

I'm looking at this one as well. I hope the link works. The dimensions given are 14" across at the widest point and 10" from top to bottom, 3" deep, 10" handle drop.

The seller says that it doesn't have serial numbers because it dates to before they started using numbers.

Definitely genuine. There's a very narow window in the mid to late 70s when bags would have had creeds but no serial numbers so that would be my guess on the date.

The style looks like a Marketing Tote and the measurements match. It's a style that doesn't show up very often. Nice finds!

The earliest retail prices I have for either bag are from 1986 so obviously the Marketing Tote 1970's price would have been lower but in '86 it listed for $170. The Compact Slim Satchel would have retailed for $104 in 1986.

Hope that helps!

Item: purchased at thrift store
Seller: thrift store
Comments: Purchased for 6$. I "think" it's ok, but know I need to check. (Daughter says if it's authentic, it's hers. Sigh. ;) )

Authentic? Name? If authentic, it's 1997? Pics are uploaded to an album, and posted below:

Dang! That was fast! Thank you! :D (Even daughter said, "that was fast replying".)

I've already handwashed it since those pics (soapy Ivory lather on hands; no stains at all, so didn't soak). Will give it a good conditioning tomorrow evening, and then I guess daughter gets her bag. ;)

She thanks you too. ;)

You're welcome! Daughter and Mom have great taste!

I Love those well made, fabulous leather Coach bags that last for ever!

;)

Ok, I've been out of the Coach loop for awhile (trying to avoid buying bags) so I don't recall this one. Not to mention I KNOW she has the name wrong!

The creed looks crocked to me. My brain is telling me FAKE, but I really want some tattersall items!
Yuck. Your brain is correct. You don't want this tattersall one!

Feel free to report.

Most everything on iOffer is fake and for the few listings where the photos show an authentic item, 99% of the time, the pictures are stolen and the item the buyer will get is fake.
