The same issue was brought up recently at the Clothing & Accessories Board of Ebay's Discussion Forums, and the answers cover that topic pretty well and from several different perspectives:

http://forums.ebay.com/db2/topic/Clothing-Shoes-Accessories/We-Cant-Use/5200003339#1307868374684

Thanks for the link! These were some of the same questions I had. I already had my own photos, but wondered why so many sellers used stock photos if it was wrong. Alot of them reputable powersellers too. I've read up on ebays rules to clarify & know it was right thing to remove the 3 stock photos I had.

I still think "BeenBurned" was a little harsh in her critique though. I had my own pictures with the stock photo in each of those listings she mentioned, with 1 exception (which I corrected on my own before this conversation ever began). And...I have a good reputation as a buyer & seller. Mostly, I'm just a crazy shopaholic...who LOVES Coach (seriously can't find any more room in my closet to store them)...whose turning a hobby into a way to not have to go back to work full-time.

I think this site is great though...people looking out for each other:smile1:! Hope you all will give me a chance to join in!

I'm sorry I came across as harsh but as a seller whose pictures (and/or descriptions) are stolen on a regular basis, I'm offended that picture theft is perceived as a harmless and victimless act. It's frustrating to scroll through ebay, Amazon, Bonz, blogs, etc. and see your own pictures in someone else's listings. So yes, I do get angry and IMO, it's justified.

For the following statement, I'm not just referring to my listings, but those of other sellers too. Sellers who have long histories of selling and post many clear and definitive pictures in their listings spend hours taking those pictures, editing, cropping, re-taking blurry ones, uploading to photo-hosting sites, transferring the HTML links into listings then writing their descriptions. To prepare one listing from start to finish can take an hour or more.

And the design houses' photographers do the same thing when posting to the websites.

So for another seller to come along and take the easy "copy and paste" route is wrong! It's stealing, immoral, unethical and misleading to the buyers who think they are bidding on the item they will receive.

And just for the record (without trying to be argumentative), your completed listings also used many stock photos. And some of those listings showed none of your own pictures of the actual items.

As you say, you are an honest seller but when you are using the work belonging to others, your buyers don't know how honest you are.

I agree with you...I too have had my pictures & exact wording of my listings stolen by another seller. They didn't even go to the trouble to mix it up a little. I have spent many hours doing all that you've mentioned, from the very beginning of my selling career to this point. That's why I have defended myself so vehemently, I have had literally less than 10-12 of my 158 listings w/a stock photo included. And that has only been when I've had focus problems with my camera (& retook the pictures multiple times). I have done the work & respect those who do the same. I would disagree with your term "many stock photos" & say "some recent use of stock photos" would be more accurate. Either way, I am not the "copy & paste" type of seller...I work very hard at what I do. I just don't want to be wrongly catagorized because of a few recent pictures amongst the 1000's I have taken over the past 2 years.

That said...I will own up to my ignorance & error on the subject of using them AT ALL. Although my few mistakes do not discredit the work I have done on a regular basis (just ask my husband who complains about my computer time working on listings). Just want the record straight, cuz I care :)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Item: Coach key chain ( i don't know the style)
Listing number:1949433
Seller: Kelly4
Link: http://www.listia.com/auction/1949433
Comments: There is some dispute as to whether this is authentic. The seller says the bought it at the grand opening of the COACH store in Niagara and is upset that there is authenticity questions. Myself and another member do not believe it is authentic but the seller is adamant. Any help is appreciated.

It's fake. And not even a good one. Coach didn't make a fob in this style, the font on the charms is wrong and the enameling is incorrect and sloppy.

Coach made a keychain with several (5) snaphead charms. (The original Coach stock photo showed 7 charms so the counterfeiters copied that pic even though it wasn't correct for the final item Coach put into production.)

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO AWAIT OTHER OPINIONS.

it appears that this fake is trying to copy style 92036 which looks like the following:

No other opinions are needed, it's a really bad fake. The colors aren't right either but the uneveness of the enamel and the shape of the Cs are dead giveaways, along with the wrong number of charms. Also the chain links are too thin and flimsy.

If the seller's so adamant, tell her to come here and post larger pics that actually show the details of the chain, charms and hangtag and we'll be happy to point out all the nasty mistakes.

It would also be interesting to see the receipt.

BTW,

Hyacinth,

Do you think there is any possibility that this keychain came from the outlet as stated by the seller?

Although we've seen possible instances where it's possible that a fake was returned (by a customer) and resold by the outlet, IMO, that's not a credible error for this item.

BTW,

Except for the hangtag color and the order the charms are in, this looks a lot like the seller's:
http://www.popselling.com/product/Coach Keychains/62736/18.aspx

Aha, we have a white hangtag. And the color order matches - scroll down a bit:

Several other fakes-selling sites I checked have the same keychain, in fact they use the same photos.

It's not credible but it's still remotely possible. But it's NOT a Coach piece. Check out the identical Chinese fake.

Tell the seller to post better photos - Macro shots of just one charm front and back without all the light reflections, and Macro shots of the hangtag and the links on the keychain. Oh, and that receipt, if she still has it.

To the very best of my knowledge Coach has never made a keychain with multicolor C-pattern disks. I went back through over two years of my files and Coach has never made and disk charms that look like the seller's.
