I think she's just offering another choice of the name style bag.

Neither shows any red flags but for the first one you asked about, I'd like to see a clear closeup of the creed as shown in the listing Whateve posted.

I was offering the other one because the first one was ending so soon you might not get the picture of the creed in time. Sorry you didn't understand.

I"m trying to authenticate my Vintage Willis, and having learned a few tricks from hanging out here, I am pretty good at figuring it out on my own. But, I"m wondering, how old are the oldest Willis Bags? What year approx were they first made, etc? Many show the creed of 9927, but mine seems older, seems, looks, feels AUTHENTIC, and I"m noticing even on *bay when looking at vintage Willis bags/creeds, the same thing applies on a few of those as well. If you say they are all always 9927, then I guess mine is fake...but it seems a bit too old for that. Made in USA.

Please post photos of the bag, especially the creed. According to the catalogs the Willis came out in mid-1993 as a Fall 1993 style so there will be a few with all-number serials. But there are also fake Willises with all-number serials so without actually seeing your bag there's no way to be sure which yours is.

BTW, I unknowingly bought one of those fakes when I first started shopping on Ebay and except for the inside pocket it's absolutely identical to the genuine version INCLUDING the quality, thickness and softness of the leather. Some of the fake "classics" are surprisingly accurate.

I wish I could memorize creed#'s. When at a thrift shop all you have to go by is workmanship and "instinct" and I guess I was way off on this one. Now that I've really studied the creed #, it's kind of laughable. (012-3445 good grief!!) but I don't look at the ACTUAL # very deeply when out at the shops, just because I figure a fake has other flags, and I can check #'s at my computer at home since I can't possibly remember them on my own. Do you see other spots besides the creed# that should have tipped me off? That's what I am trying to learn. I can post other pics if need be. Thanks for your responding to this. I love Willis, and if you don't see other tip offs then I will still carry it since nobody will know the creed but me. I can't sell it, and I paid a bit more for it than most other thrift bags unfortunately, since it's in great shape. It's a nice bag..darn it!!

The thing that jumps out at me first is that the word "scratches" is spelled "scrtches".

I'm not sure about this, but the "D" rings (where the shoulder strap attaches) look too close to the ends of the wooden dowel. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe it's just the photo.

Definitely wait for other opinions. I no longer have a Willis to compare it to.

:smile1:

"scrtches"...LOL...and I'm quite picky about spelling too, LOL. I don't have another Willis either so I hope someone else mentions anything they notice....but that misspelling should have smacked me in the face LOL...> THANK YOU!! P.S. I just looked at a well shot willis photo online, and you are right about the D rings-they are too close...good call!!

Why should you try to memorize the fake numbers? Just print out the two posts at the "Answers..." thread listing the most commonly found fake numbers and carry them with you. That number is on the list. Posts 549, 550 (and 551 for good measure just as a reminder of the other red flags):

We always emphasize the importance of the creed in authenticating and it's especially important with older handbags. Fake numbers, incorrect fonts (notice how thick the numbers and the "No" are), spelling and punctuation (on older bags the word "markings" is never broken and hyphenated between two lines of text, and sometimes in fakes the "k" in "markings' or "wrinkles" is replaced by an "X") will often give away a fake with just a few minutes' examination. Placement of the top handle and strap mountings on Willises can be another red flag but the creed is usually the key in spotting classic fakes.
