Okay this thread has got me looking through all of my thrifted finds to make sure they are authentic (aka paranoid).. I have a black Abbie Zip which has a creed that looks just like this except my serial is D6J-9017 (also says made in US).

Item: Abbie Zip
Seller: sa124m
Link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161878161691?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

What is especially bothering me about it is the dash under the No. and the font.
If this one is fake, then sadly that makes mine fake as well because they have identical serial number font styles. To be honest, I had no idea how prevalent counterfeiting the older leather Coach styles was, ugh!

Good evening everyone! Here's the other duffle sac that I was talking about. These are the seller's own images. I've been in contact with the seller. After she sent the creed picture to me, I told her that I would be getting a second opinion on its authenticity.

I tried to match the style/country/plant number/year/ etc., and I couldn't tell if there's anything wrong with it as I am very inexperienced still. There's the weird line under the serial number-- don't know if that's supposed to cause any concern.

In her listing, she dates the bag in the 80s... but I thought the 4 meant that the bag, if authentic, would have been made in 1994. Not sure if I'm misreading.

Please help me authenticate. Thanks in advance!

This just proves why it is so important to get things authenticated. It's fake. The creed is wrong.

ETA: Here's a picture of an authentic creed for that number.

ETA2: pay attention to the pocket size too. Counterfeiters of this style almost always make the pocket too big.

Thanks whateve :shucks: I've been having no luck with this bag. Oh well, I will just have to keep browsing!

[Edit] I also notified the seller-- I'm hoping that it was an honest mistake and that she does not keep the listing up/relist.

Please post a link to the listing and the seller's ID.

For future requests, refer to post #1 for the required info and posting format.

Your bag is fake (with D6J prefix). The J plant (on your bag) is a Chinese plant and wasn't used in 1996.

Sorry I thought the format was for ebay/bidding sites only.

This item was from Etsy. I bought the bag through paypal, so the the listing is labeled as sold. However, the seller refunded my money as soon as I notified her that the bag is a fake. She hadn't shipped the bag out yet either as I told her I was going to get a second opinion of the bag.

Also, I checked and don't think the bag is relisted.

Hi again!
Just curious, there seem to be quite a few bags with the prefix D6J that have the correct style number after..

It just seems like a lot of effort for (I assume one specific group of) counterfeiters to go through to make soooooo many different styles, that all seem to be authentic with the exception for the plant code.

Here are some:

Geometric bag:

Legacy companion:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-AUT...EATHER-SOULDER-BAG-No-D6J-9715-/221947538487?

While looking for other styles I found this cached set of posts from tPF where it was mentioned that J was used as a clothing plant which would make sense for the following leather jacket:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COACH-D6J-0964-BROWN-SUEDE-COAT-SIZE-SMALL-8-10-/131255664084

I don't know enough about catalog years to know if all of these bags were available in 1996 (and of course there could be other problems with the bags as well), but IF THEY WERE would we have to assume that all of them are fake based solely on the J plant code?

Finally, this is a bag I saw posted in the Hall of Shame, which is what prompted me to look into this further.. Barring the fact that she listed it as Bonnie Cashin from the 80's etc. what else about THIS specific bag would set off the "fake alarms" besides the J plant code? I know this seller has dubious credentials which is why I mention this bag specifically.

The more I learn the more it seems like Coach's motto is "The rules are there are no rules."

THAT STYLE WASN'T EVEN MADE UNTIL ALMOST 18 MONTHS AFTER THAT DATE CODE

THE 9966 LEGACY ZIP WASN'T INTRODUCED UNTIL SPRING 1997 SO THE D6J- CODES FOR APRIL 1996 ARE ALL A YEAR TOO EARLY

Station bag:

WRONG TURNLOCK

Backpack:

INTRO'D IN THE 1998 HOLIDAY PREVIEW CATALOG. tHAT'S MORE THAN 2 1/2 YEARS TOO EARLY. DON'T TRY TO REPORT THIS ONE, WORTHPOINT ISN'T A SELLING SITE AND SOME POOR SCHMUCK BOUGHT THAT IN 2011

Beekman:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lea...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

THE BACK OF THE TURNLOCK IS COVERED OVER BY LEATHER WHICH MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE OWNER TO REPLACE. COACH ALWAYS LEFT THE BACKS OPEN.

Legacy companion:

STYLE 9715 IS THE WRONG STYLE NUMBER AND BELONGS TO A TURNLOCK FLAP THAT WASN'T EVEN INTRODUCED UNTIL HOLIDAY 2001

AS FOR THE LAST BAG FROM OFTEN-DISCUSSED AND ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMENDED ETSY SELLER GUTSY GIRLS, WE'RE NOT GOING TO GIVE THAT ...PERSON ANY MORE INFORMATION ON WHAT DETAILS SHE SHOULD LEAVE OUT OF HER PHOTOS. THE FAKE DATE CODE IS ENOUGH TO PROVE THE BAG FAKE, AND THE BLATANT LIES ABOUT THE DATE AND DESIGNER OF THE BAG SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO CONVINCE ANY POTENTIAL BUYERS TO HIT THE "BACK" BUTTON WHEN THEY SEE HER NAME OR STORE ID.

Here's just the LATEST discussion on that seller for anyone who didn't read the Hall of Shame posts. And there are a LOT more like that in these forums about debbieb208 and Gutsy Girls:

My comments are in CAPS I hope these prove what we're already said.

And you're close, but Coach's official motto is "The only consistent thing about Coach is our inconsistency"

You're REALLY determined to make us spend our entire morning on the day before Thanksgiving reporting fake bags, aren't you? :D

When posting is in the required format, it allows us to report the listing, watch the seller, see the listing, take note of if it's relisted either on etsy or on another site, look at her other listings to see if there are other fakes, etc.

Coach Court bag?

https://www.thredup.com/product/women-coach-brown-small-accessory/10939437

The bag measures 9.25 "x 8.25 "x 3"
Creed: E6G 9870 Made in the United States

I bought this bag from Thredup--an consignment company. I have purchased authentic things from the company before, but this bag is giving me pause. What is concerning to me is that creed is so lightly stamped that I am having trouble reading it, the stitching is sloppy in places, the inside of one pocket has a gap in the leather at the bottom, and the zipper pull is different from my other older Coach bags. I would appreciate any help in authenticating this, as I am just going by gut instinct on thinking it may not be authentic.

Thank you!

Please wait for other opinions but I don't believe that bag is authentic.

Compare your creed to this one from the same plant 2 months later. The text is different and the font is wrong:

Comment : is it a City?

A big thank you, ladies :)

Once again we'll remind everyone - DON'T EVER EXPECT A SELLER TO KNOW OR POST THE CORRECT NAME OR STYLE NUMBER (or to know or post when it was made or who designed it, or what "vintage" actually means)

It's NOT a Penny, it's NOT a 9755 Pocket Purse either. It MIGHT be a City Bag but Coach gives the City Bag measurements as 11x7, the seller says this is 8x10. Whatever it is, it's genuine, made in 1987. At least the seller posted the right time period.
