Hi! Oh no - did I buy a fake? The zippers pulls are a different color than the buckles and are not engraved YKK. Purchased recently through Mercari.

Approx dimensions: 9.5" W (without snap pouches) x 5.0" H x 2.25" D

Thje brand of zipper has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Coach authenticity. Read the Signature paragraph at the bottom of all my posts. And wherever you heard or read that nonsense, please ignore it and everything else from that source. That "rule" was exposed as false almost 20 years ago.

And plating on zipper pulls can wear off. Neither of the details you mentioned are never used as a sole proof of authenticity or lack of it.

Read the six Salearea Coach Guide thread before going any further, and don't worry if some of the links in it no longer work:

It looks like a genuine Waist Pouch, style 506 from the early 1990s

Hello.. Can you help me to authenticate my latest coach bag that I found online please?

Item: Coach zip tote bag (I guess)
Serial number: I can not found any serial number on the creed (please see pic below)

Comments: I found the creed is suspicious, there is no serial number and it has crossgrain leather on the lining. And for the most Coach zip tote bag (with signature style), I saw the lining they used is genuine leather instead of crossgrain leather (the lining, the creed, and hang tag). This coach bag is made in vietnam by the way. Thank I hope you can help me. Cheers

I just want to thank you again for an authentication you all did in August. I remember seeing it then, and now, months later, I ended up with this unique Coach sample bag! Yay. It's for my personal collection. https://www.ebay.com/itm/266128816838?nma=true&si=Hm3D9VirJ1Olw7j2FUdXg2EGoto%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Hi dear Authenticators,

Please find below a bag that I found at Goodwill. I was very happy to find a Made in NYC bag, but upon further inspection, I realized style number (9219) does not match the style (Dinky?). Can you please kindly share your thoughts? Also, what color would you say this?

Thank you so much for sharing your precious time with us here. I am beyond grateful.

ON SELLERS MAKING THEIR OWN CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY

This is at least the third time I've seen this and AFAIK always from different sellers. Certificates Of Authenticity ONLY have credibility when they are published by known and impartial experts, usually members of a professional (meaning for-pay) authentication service. They should always include the legal or business name of the person or company, the service's contact information, perhaps a disclosure of the terms of restitution if the authentication proves to be in error, and a description of the item including any identifying, registration or serial numbers.

Sellers on Ebay can't create their own COAs for their own items. Not only is it deceptive, but such self-published "certificates" have NO recognition by Ebay, Paypal, or any legitimate selling or auction entity and according to common business practice should never be accepted as proof that an item is genuine, since there is NO proof of the "authenticator's" experience, expertise with that particular brand, or impartiality.

But while looking for something else on Ebay I came across a seller doing exactly that, not just for Coach but for 6 or 8 other handbag brands as well. The 'certificates" don't include any authenticator or service name or contact info and no identifying numbers and were apparently produced by the Ebay seller on their computer, which I believe is against Ebay Rules as well as accepted business practice. Even services that have a poor track record with authenticating follow a basic format.

I've posted here at tPF before about this situation. A seller has to KNOW that a brand-name item is genuine to list it on Ebay. Trying to convince a buyer that a qualified authenticator has looked at and verified its authenticity when no such examination has taken place is essentially deceptive, it's lying to the potential buyer and can give them a false sense of security. If the item turns out to be fake, the certificate is meaningless and doesn't prove a darned thing. It has no legal standing or merit. Please DON'T think that a COA always guarantees that you're getting an authentic item examined by an expert. Granted,a few well-advertised services aren't much more accurate with Coach products than if they just flipped a coin, but any service that can't prove their own expertise or back up their statements with a trustworthy COA that would "stand up in court" should be avoided. I have no problem with the Cleaning and Defects disclosures, but self-authentication is a very slippery slope and should be avoided.

Here's an example, click to enlarge:

OK, rant over.

It's genuine. 9219 is NOT the style number.

Read the Salearea Guides thread for information on creeds, serial numbers and more. The Guide itself starts at post 13. Some older URLs are no longer active.

Genuine, actually a Penelope Bucket or Penelope Bucket Tote. The little key hood is missing, but there's no photo of the key hood in my files..

Both are genuine, Dinky and Legacy West Hobo
