Hello! I purchased a wholesale box and received this Coach bag. I definitely am not interested in selling fakes, but I was never a Coach enthusiasts so my knowledge is desperately lacking. I've tried to image search this but the only matches have slight differences from this so hoping someone can help. Thanks in advance!! 20220608_135648.jpg20220608_135342.jpg20220608_135329.jpg20220608_135425.jpg20220608_135435.jpg20220608_135452.jpg20220608_135640.jpg20220608_135648.jpg20220608_135705.jpg

Would you please authenticate this bag I purchased from a consignment sale? It's the first fake I purchased in awhile and I am trying to show the seller. About 8" x 6" Thank you.

It's a very bad fake. The MAJOR red flag is that the serial number's font is totally wrong for any bag made in the "D" Coach plant in 1997, the serial number in the fake claims it was made in January (code A) 1997 (code 7) in Coach's "D" plant (code D). Here's the fake in question:
1997_D-plant-FAKE_A7D 9019_Maggie-tan-a.jpg

THIS is a creed and serial from a GENUINE Coach with a slightly different style number from January 1997 and made in the D plant, the most damning mistake is the too-long length of the underscore in the "No" abbreviation.
1997_D-plant_A7D-9018-a.jpg

and here's another GENUINE creed and serial from a month later, "B" indicates made in February. Same style number as yours, same underscore and number 1 details as other genuine D plant serials. Coach issues each main plant their own creed and serial number stamps, and to an experienced authenticator they're almost as unique to each plant as fingerprints are to humans. They're the most accurate way I know of to spot a fake Coach or to authenticate a genuine one. BTW, the variety of small lines and dots above and below the digits in the genuine serial numbers are another STRONG indication that the bag is genuine when and only when they're exactly what a highly qualified authenticator knows they should be, which these are.
1997_D-plant-REAL B7D-9019-a-a.jpg

and here's ANOTHER fake that's a twin to the fake in question with exactly the same fake serial number that was already in my files, same incorrect underscore, same incorrect number "1" with the missing horizontal bar on the base - that horizontal bar on the "1" is on the genuine number in the serial numbers from the D plant, but NOT on these fakes.
1997_D-plant-FAKE-A7D9019.jpg

One other point - the binding or piping wrapping around the base of the fake is too thick.

I am not looking at buying this one, I want to confirm it's a fake:

Vintage Coach Black Leather Crossbody Bag W/ Flap No. L4C-5130

Confirmed. Wrong font for anything from the C plant in November 1994. The hangtag is also an obvious fake but more important is the fake NON-Coach turnlock with indentations on the back.

Thank you very much for breaking that down. The seller did not believe it was fake. I share the link with the Purse Forum to everyone I meet regarding vintage Coach bags. The more people who authenticate before selling out there, the better it is for everyone.

Hello Authenticators! I want to thank you all for helping me NOT purchase any fakes thus far. I have had a few good ones get past me because I acted too slowly, but no fakes have been bought and you continue to teach everyone through this platform. I try to read some of the other posts to help me get a better understanding of what to look for and what to avoid. Thank you so much!

Can you assist with authenticating this one:

This is a weird one. It has a serial prefix for the A plant usually found in samples, Soho hardware with a Sonoma lining, a style number that I'm seeing as 9942 not in my records, and an unusually wrinkled strap and magnetic tab. It's also a style I've never seen before, but I've seen a similar type of mag snap before and a similar kind of long top strap.

Right now I'm thinking that it's a genuine sample or pilot bag but I want to do more digging. I DON'T recommend trying to sell it without actual confirmation.

There's still nothing on it that I can find. A few details make me sure it was at least made with Coach parts, but probably as a sample. Samples can't be authenticated since there's no record of the style in Coach's online or catalog records so we strongly suggest that they never be sold since they can't be authenticated. Just use it and enjoy it.

Hi, I’m trying to learn and am wondering if someone could clarify why this was identified as a “dinky”
Rather than a “pocket purse”. I thought the dinky had a zipper inside or something different- maybe it was the strap on the dinky that is sewn on rather than removable. Not sure. TIA

There are quite a few small differences aside from the strap attachments. here are their respective catalog pages from about 30 years ago, the Pocket Purse also has more pockets, surprise surprise!:
