Hi, thank you for the response. I’m super bummed about the brown leather crossbody being a fake. Especially bc I’ve already paid for it so now I’ll just have to dispute it with my credit card company, most likely. Can you tell me anything that stood out and let you know it was fake? Was it the number? I should have checked before purchasing so that’s totally on me.

Also, for the crossbody listing on FB marketplace, this was the picture provided:

It looks fine.

And, I know better than to buy before authenticating...but there are these two shopgoodwill bags that were purchased on a whim:

Yes, there are problems with the creed, stamping and font. But the most obvious is that the text contradicts the serial number/plant code. Creed states that it's US made but the J plant didn't make bags in the US. J is a Chinese plant for bags.

Comments: please authenticate and provide year of production - 2000? I didn’t catch that it was made in China so I’m not sure it’s old enough vintage. I’m the purchaser. I’ve got to start skipping the ones I find close to the auction ending…

It's authentic but not vintage until 2025.

I was afraid of that. Can you give me the link to the thread that breaks down the serial number formats, please? I tried to find it and couldn’t. Thank you!
The Salearea guides are full of information. There's info about how to read creeds and serial numbers.

The style 9061 is actually called a Rambler's LEGACY. "Rambler" or "Rambler Bag" is a different and older style, 9735.

EDIT -
Item: #9530 Small Shoulder bag NOT the
small Legacy Trail bag Early version of 9965, correct?
Seller: ndnm189719
Site: eBay

Your question isn't really answerable because you're starting off with incorrect information. We can't say this too often - don't ever depend on sellers to get the names or histories of the items they're selling correct. Mistakes are passed down on the internet through years or even decades because once, long ago, someone got lazy and posted incorrect information and hundreds of sheep took a short cut and kept copying their mistake.

The "Trail Bag" identification as style 9965 is a perfect example, and we've talked about it here many times including the name confusion. 9965 is NOT a Trail Bag, it's a Legacy Small Flap. From a 1997 catalog:

THIS is a Trail Bag, style 9955, from a 1995 catalog, click on the thumbnail to enlarge:

I've never heard of a Legacy Trail Bag, there's no such animal in my files.

As for the bag you're asking about, it's authentic and made probably in the early to middle 1980s but it's a bit harder to pin down. It's probably a style 9530, the measurements are right. It was called a "Shoulder Bag With Turnlock" in the Summer 1986 catalog and a "Small Shoulder Bag" in a 1983 catalog, so you get to pick the name you want to call it.

Hyacinth, thank you very much for the clarifications and help. I will never confuse 'Trail bag' with 'Legacy Flap' again. Your knowledge and guidance is greatly appreciated. And the authentication is, of course, appreciated too!
