Hi there!

Item: E5S 9953
Where purchased or how obtained: local Goodwill
Dimensions: 28 cm tall, 30 cm wide
Comments: I would like to know if authentic and help ID (if possible/willing). I know virtually nothing about Coach and authenticating, but love this bag and am just curious. In my little research done tonight I believe it’s a Helen Legacy Bucket Bag- 9953 -but the creed seems to be different, older than the ones I’m seeing online.
Creed is difficult to read: can’t ID a word in it, after “natural” and before “characteristics”. Maybe not authentic after all…?

Thank you!!!

I finally found one that matches! The missing creed word is “markings”.

Sorry it's fake. That very fuzzy stamping and the mismatched hardware - brass buckle with silver grommets - are two giveaways.

here’s another I purchased to rehab before I found this amazing place. Please tell me this one is authentic lol :P

Item:9981 Watson ?
Item #: 265546665350
From: ebay
Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-CO...=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

Here is also a pic of the creed I requested via message. Seller said it reads H5D-8981 but is very rubbed so I’m pretty sure it’s 9981.

Wow, you're certainly not afraid of a challenge!

And you're correct about it being a 9981 Watson Bag. The serial number isn't readable but the details shown and the font used in the creed stamp makes me beieve it's genuine when I compare it to a known genuine bag in my files from the same year and almost the same month. I'll take the seller's word that the year code is for 1995.

There's also a correct detail that the fakes makers often get wrong.

I'm sorry, but it's fake, The Coach logo above the creed has a problem, and the "S" plant code is invalid not just for the month and year but even the COUNTRY where it was supposedly made. There are other problems too, but there's no question that it's fake. Whateve has already pointed out several other problems.

If you already bought it or paid for it, get your money back.

Here is a GENUINE creed and serial number with an E5S- prefix, note the country of manufacture. That plant in 1995 made only business and travel bags and luggage:

Thanks! This is the first one I’m going to give a go that may need more than just a bath and condition. We’ll see what happens!

I feel you…I had the same experience and only learned afterward this thread existed. SO thankful for all of the authenticators on this thread! Learned lots and it has helped me become a more educated buyer.
Same here!!!! Still have a couple to authenticate I bought before I knew about this amazing resource and all of these generous people donating their time and expertise. Thank you all so much.

Do you guys have any suggestions how I can alter the strap? The more I think about it the more I don’t think I like it as is. Maybe I’ll just re-sell (fully disclosed of course)
Ask in the rehab club. I think you could get someone to sew on rings and then you could use any clip on strap. You could possibly use the leather of the strap to make the tabs to hold the rings.

Another thing you could do is put some casings inside the flap to hold a strap, similar to this picture:

7000 gramercy clutch bigger 1998 M8E with flat bottom feet different strap attachment 11 point...jpg

You could cut the current strap in half and then attach the ends to a chain, making a chain strap.
