Hi all,
Has anyone dealt with the authentication issue with Mercari?
I was recently told that one of my bags isn't authentic, therefore, they will not allow me to list it. The bag was authenticated here.
Mercari requires the item to be authenticated before listing depending on what category and what price you plan to list it for. For Coach, they require the authentication if you price it over $300. I wonder whether anyone came across this issue and how you have resolved it? I, of course have an option to bypass it by selecting 'no brand' but I am not sure whether I will then open up the door for the remorseful buyer to say that the item is fake?
(Please post a link to the TPF authentication.)

I'm not on Mercari so I'm not sure how it works there.

Are you saying that you were trying to list a $300+ item and they stopped you prior to listing? Or did you list and they removed it?

I'm assuming that you weren't able to list it because they thought it was fake. Who does their authenticating? Is the item sent to them?

I have a problem with you workaround since it can encourage dishonesty, either letting sellers list fakes at a lower pricepoint than that requiring authentication. Or by listing as "no brand," it's circumventing not only the brand, but can be done (and often is done) by sellers who know items are fake.

The fact is that it's ILLEGAL to sell fakes, whether listing as "inspired," "authenticity unknown," "unbranded," "hand made," or any other euphemism that avoids using a brand.

Additionally, an authentic item isn't going to get the views if you can't list as the brand.

Can you appeal?

I believe I have found a fake Coach for sale and I’d sort of like to test my assessment (and seethe that so many fake are sold as real)! Can a dear Authenticator weigh in?

Seller: Virginia Sogas Frank
Venue: Facebook Marketplace

No number.

Thank you!
There should be a white label hidden somewhere inside the bag, possibly buried in the pocket. It has 2 rows of letters/numbers and we need to see a picture of it.

Hi @BeenBurned ,
Thank you for your response!
I agree it wouldn't be great to list it as 'no brand' and that statement came out of emotional place, I apologize. As for listing item that requires authentication, seller create the listing and have Mercari review it. They also require a seller to take a separate group of pictures on their phone for authentication purposes, maybe this is to verify that the seller actually have the item in hands and not sending Mercari the screen shots or stock photos of someone else's item. So on Mercari, unless you get your item reviewed, your listing will not go LIVE. I believe Poshmark authenticate items after its sales so there's some difference here.

Anyways, Mercari actually got back to me last night and said "Though our authenticator was unable to confirm the authenticity of the item, we have moved the item to "on sale" status. Because the result of the authentication review was inconclusive, the listing will not show the "Authentication" badge or be otherwise included in the Premier Authenticate program. Rest assured, the listing is still active and available for buyers to purchase. "

Mercari's definition of 'inconclusive' is:
*RA stands for third party authentication company, Real Authentication.
  • “Inconclusive”: RA could not determine authenticity.
    • An item may be reviewed by Mercari for a second chance to be able to list it. However, even if determined to be authentic, it will not receive the item authentication badge.
    • You may list your item elsewhere (off-Mercari) if RA cannot authenticate.
I have no clue what they are actually saying.. First of all, why do they not give seller an 'authentication badge' if the second review proves its authenticity? And they go on to say, "good luck with your sale elsewhere!" :annoyed:

Real Authentication
Although I've heard of RA (Real Authentication), I've never used them and don't know who they use as their "experts" nor whether have brand experts (different experts for different brands) but I do know I've read and heard of mistakes.

Although there are certainly posts about correct findings from RA, there have been mistakes.

Here's a post that discusses Real Authentication being wrong on LV:

Here's one saying that a previously authenticated Prada was found to be fake:

I would think that the authentication badge would add credibility to you and your item and it's worth a try (what's to lose?) by submitting links to our authentication on TPF and possibly refer TPTB at Mercari that they might benefit from adding additional authenticators for second or third opinions if a finding is "inconclusive."

This isn't to imply that there AREN'T cases where authenticity can't be proven but that doesn't appear to be the case with your bag.

This might seem obvious but just wanted this looked at to be certain…
I got this purse at auction with two other purses. I have never seen a serial number stamped like that ever! But I thought it could be a fake or maybe far older bag??
I tried my best with measuring
Height: 8.5
Width: 13
Thanks in advanced for all the hard work you all put into this site!
