Hi TPF, I’m new here and hoping to pick up a nice vintage leather coach bag. I’m not new to vintage coach and might get around to posting the two thrifted ones we found - a tan 9136 and a black tote (maybe 9809?) - for authentication. I appreciate any help in advance, and I think the knowledge here is very impressive.

Also, I’m not a big brand snob, I’m only searching for coach as a shortcut to quality leather and construction, and if a fake can replicate it well enough to fool me, then it might as well be what I was looking for… or maybe I’m telling myself that to feel better.

Anyway, thanks. Hope it’s okay to combine multiple requests and I apologize if I messed up the format. If any of these don’t have photos of the creed/stamp/whatever they’re called, I’ll go back and ask…

Also, if this is too many, I primarily want to know if the first one is legit just cause of the price.

Welcome.

Please limit 4 listings per post. More than that is too confusing.

I've numbered for ease of reference.

1. Need creed to comment

2. Seems okay

3. I'd like other opinions on this one.

4. authentic

Good to know, I’ll keep any further requests to a minimum. Thanks nonetheless.

I did read the bit about the all-leather bags having fewer fakes because it’s just not cost effective to forge, but still nice to know most of these are okay. I’ll get creed pictures for 1 and 7

Welcome to the forum. You've got too many in one post. It makes it hard for us to keep track. Next time, only put 3 or 4 in a post. You've already gotten some answers. I'll try to fill in the gaps. If #1 turns out to be authentic, it is likely the exact same color as #2. They might both be camel.
#3. I believe it is authentic.
#7. I had one of these. The extra pockets are nice but the leather isn't as nice as vintage.
#8. 9076 is companion flap; I've got 9715 listed as Legacy turnlock companion flap.

ETA: It isn't true there are fewer fakes of all leather bags. There are plenty.

Sorry, I got the the message about too many listings in one post. Won’t do that again.

As for the first two 9076s, I had a hunch they were the same color in vastly different lighting, but I couldn’t get a straight answer. Hoping it’s real - I don’t have an eye for vintage coach, but I do have an eye for leather and it looks like decent full grain.

RE:#7, appreciate the input - I was leaning against picking up a newer one like this. The leather just looks shinier and less real and I’m not into much branding.

Nice to know the names of the 9076 and 9715 - I was confused whether they were the same or not. So is the 9715 a more recent legacy reproduction that’s effectively the same?

There are thousands of "all leather" fakes. Some are made of leather and others are pleather but they're VERY highly faked.

Ah, I’ll keep that in mind. I like to think I can spot real leather but I know it’s a crapshoot in online phone pictures. I’ve seen nice looking pleather in like a pebble grain or so, but I’ve never seen any that can match the matte glow of smooth leather. I shop for vintage shell cordovan shoes sometimes and it’s hilarious to see sellers try to pass off burgundy calf shoes with a bunch of creasing and wrinkling as shell. Once you know what it looks like, the way shell rolls instead of creasing is unmistakeable.

That said, if a fake is made of full grain leather and looks almost identical, I might as well, honestly - I’m not trying to impress anyone. Artisan/handmade/etc. leather bags on Etsy would cost at least a solid 50$ so if I get one for less that’s falsely labeled Coach, I don’t know if I’d be missing out. Would I?

The shininess of #7 was what I couldn't warm up to. I loved the 2 tone. I didn't keep it.
It's not clear if the 9715 is more recent. I have 9076 made in 2000 and 9715 made in 2001 so very close to same time.

Personally I wouldn't carry a fake. Someone profited over a lie. I don't know if you could get an artisan bag on etsy that is the same quality as vintage Coach. Most of lower priced bags on etsy look rawer, less finished. I've had my hands on several fakes. On some the leather isn't as nice. On others, it is pretty close. I doubt you would be able to tell in pictures.

Someone profited over a lie.

Ok fair enough, I didn’t think of that aspect.

And also fair point that I wouldn’t find the same quality of leather and craftsmanship for the price.

Guess I gotta do this correctly now..

In other news, got a creed photo back for #2, although you seem to have validated it already:

Edit: regarding leather fakes, I definitely didn’t read enough and probably saw that on some 2007 post. I appreciate the info about this. I’ll look out for them.

Now I gotta go take pictures of our other two and find out if they’re real. Particularly the 9136 feels amazing, so I’d be shocked if it wasn’t authentic.

This one is fine.

So now I’m curious and testing my spotting skills. This one’s stands out as a fake to me - I can just feel it. Something about the texture, microcreasing, font, and whatever’s flaking off in this picture.

definitely fake, for many reasons. That number is seen on a lot of fakes. It is never valid.
