Hello I bought this Vintage Coach Willis bag on Mercari. It’s a very thick, luxuriously soft leather and the brass pieces are heavy and well made. I posted this on another site and someone immediately told me it was fake and a different site told me it was real. I’m looking for a 3rd opinion! Thank you.

Sorry, it's fake. The serial number isn't using the correct font for a genuine bag with the same plant, month, and year codes. There are also at least two construction details that aren't right, and if we had photos of several other details we could probably find more mistakes.

Details in creeds and serial numbers, especially the exact fonts used by each plant during a specific time period, are critical in authenticating Coach items. The site or person who told you it was genuine should never be trusted with any more Coach "authentications".

Any genuine Willis or similar Coach with a serial number starting with "J6D" should have a serial prefix with digits that look like this, although they might NOT have the same short lines right above or below the letters and numbers those "overstamping lines" are not important here. The second half of the number is the style number and even though those numbers may be different, the fonts should be the same:

GENUINE J6D serial prefixes:

and
1996_D-plant-outlet-J6D-9993.jpg

compared to yours - the "No J6D"s are completely different, and so are the fonts

Could someone help me authenticate this and/or find model name or number? Thanks so much! I purchased on poshmark from Mokexpress, here is the link: https://poshmark.com/listing/Black-Vintage-Coach-Crossbody-5eb196cb284e994424cba9d
I’ll attach photos as well! Thanks in advance!

The Poshmark link isn't working. This looks like the right one, the last number is missing in your link:

Do you actually have the bag in your possession? The seller may have mis-measured the bag by 2 inches both ways. The style details are right for a Sheridan Greensboro, but Coach gives the measurements for that style as 9x8 inches but the seller says it measures 11x10 inches. That's a pretty big difference. The seller also implies that the bag was made before the 1980s which is NOT correct at all, it would have been made in 1992 or 1993.

I'm not completely comfortable unless you can verify the measurements with the seller. Make sure she's not pulling out or extending the sides when she's measuring it, the side-to side measurement should only be from one seam to the other. The bag looks genuine but the measurements should be clarified, they may not fit your needs.

This is Coach's page on that style from a 1992 catalog:

Thank you for this info. I’m very surprised it isn’t authentic. What construction details aren’t right?
