Do the buckles feel heavy like they should if they are solid brass? I've never seen that top grain cowhide on a bag that I can remember but I have seen it on a 60s wallet. I would have assumed that by the time this bag was made, they were using full grain. It is extremely hard to authenticate these as there aren't creeds to check, but I don't think pre-creed bags are usually a target of counterfeiters. But someone could potentially put a Coach stamp on a generic bag. I can't imagine why even a generic bag would have solid brass stamped on the buckles if it weren't true.

Here’s a better picture showcasing the gold plating wearing off. They DO have a weight to them, possibly even heavier than the brass, and they DO NOT have a magnetic pull whatsoever. I’m so perplexed by this bag.

The original eBay listing stated that the sellers sister worked for an airline and this was her bag. That might explain why it’s painted to high heaven! But I’m still stumped by these buckles.

Hello friends! I just purchased some great vintage Coach from my local savers. I’m pretty sure they are authentic but you never know. I was wondering if you could check them for me

This bag is like a puzzle, other than the solid brass looks like plated, leather is top grain not full grain, @whateve, have you seen gold colour print used in other pre creed Coach leather items? I am just curious, and want to know what to look for in the future. Thanks.

I have this label in a wallet. It looks a lot like yours. I've never seen this label in a bag but that doesn't mean it was never used. This wallet is mid 60s. I would have expected your bag to have been made later - probably early to mid 70s. Coach Bonnie Cashin clutch 1960s different striped lining top grain cowhide stamp.JPG

In my files I have the stewardess released in Spring 1977. That is close to the time when creeds started to be used. There could have been samples made earlier.

From the bags I've seen, very early bags didn't have solid brass hardware. I think they started using solid brass in the 70s, which would be consistent with your bag being made in the mid 70s. I have a metal tag bag with buckles that appear to be solid brass but aren't marked. The fact that yours don't look like solid brass has me stumped.

I don't know when they began using full grain cowhide. I believe my metal tag bag is probably full grain, and I have another early 70s bag with the embossed Coach logo that I'm sure is full grain. I can't imagine why they would use top grain on a bag made in the mid 70s, as your seems to be. But it is possible. Maybe yours was a sample and they just used whatever they had lying around.

Hello Coach Authenticators,
Please help me authenticate this bag I purchased on Mercari from the seller Qwanishia.
Thank you!

I hope you haven't paid for it yet.

The serial number is almost unreadable, which is usually a danger sign. It looks like it might say T8K-4914, but the style number 4914 doesn't match the bag style. No bag with a style number that begins with a 4 looks like that. If the first digit of the style number is a T, that's an invalid month code. If the third digit, the plant code, is a K, that's also an invalid code.

The bag looks like it's trying to be a style 9988 Saddle Bag but that style number doesn't look ANYTHING LIKE the style number in the serial number.

IF YOU BOUGHT IT AND HAVEN'T PAID, DON'T! IF YOU ALREADY PAID, TELL THE SELLER YOU WANT TO CANCEL AND INSIST ON A FULL REFUND.

If you had searched tPF for "coach t8k 4914" you would have seen close to a dozen posts going back to 2014 that pointed that serial number out as Fake and Invalid.

And please authenticate your purchases here BEFORE you buy, not after.

1- genuine, one of the Saddle Pouches, early to mid 1980s

2- genuine, probably a Saddle Pouch Large also from the early or middle 1980s.
