There was definitely a small metal plaque exactly the same shape and size as the Coach plaque at the top of that pocket once upon a time. Although it might not be accepted as absolute proof in a court of law, I'm 99.99 percent sure it was made by Coach.

For $8.99, I'd say you've got a keeper, even if you end up hanging onto it yourself instead of selling it. And you might want to be carrying that one the next time you play Bingo or buy lottery tickets, maybe there's still a bit of that luck tucked away in that bag.
:happydance::heart: That's wonderdul news! I intend to keep it for myself. I'd been wanting one for forever, but the prices have been over my budget. Sooo grateful to have found this beauty! Do you know what colors these came in?
Also is there a such thing as a small and large Courier? Thank you again

There is a small and large. I don't have a catalog picture of the small one. They are hard to find so they probably didn't make them very long. I believe the large one was introduced first, probably starting around 1972. Earlier versions were called chunky shoulder bag. The earliest catalogs I've seen with colors mentioned are from around 1980. Yours was made in the early to mid 70s. This is the color chart for 1980.

Good morning! I guess... I'm hoping... that factories can sometimes stamp the wrong Numbers on bags...wishful thinking:hrmm: . Thank you for your efforts:smile:

Factories DO sometimes stamp the wrong numbers, but the chances of one stamping a handbag style number inside a briefcase are pretty slim (style 9944 belongs to a Taylor Zip handbag). The big problem is that the bag looks like a copy of the 5281 Field bag, but the front pockets aren't quite right especially at the bottom, and while this one has a date code for July 1994, the 5281 Field Bag wasn't even introduced until the Holiday 1995 catalog.

I THINK this is what it's trying to be, from the 1996 Preview catalog showing the new-for-1996 turnlock design:
5281_Field Bag-1996Preview-a.jpg

I can't find any style available in 1994 that matches the bag in the listing. The only thing that's even close is a dowel version of the Field Bag.

More opinions are welcome

ETA -
we just authenticated a genuine 5281 Field Bag a few days ago, you can compare the differences in the front pockets. Even the front flap looks a bit longer on the suspected fake.

Here's the questionable bag from Posh:
5281_POSS FAKE_G4N-9944-g.jpg

If it wasn't for the date it might be tempting to just think it was a plant screw-up with the style number, but a year and a half is just too wide a gap.

Good morning Authenticators,
Could you please check this bag when you get a chance? The pictures are terrible so I attached a couple more.
