How can you tell

The C pattern isn't aligned correctly, the stitching as shown on the underside of the strap in the first photo is sloppy and uneven, the "leather ware" under Coach stamped onto the leather trim piece on the front of the bag is 2 words when it should be only one and in fact I don't think that style should even have that stamp on it. Genuine Coaches with C pattern or logo lining fabrics predominant on the outside should NOT have C pattern or logo linings, the inside zipper pull is wrong, the plant code in the serial number is invalid, the creed is badly stamped and stitched AND crooked, the lining with that Red Signature C fabric on that style should be a solid red. and Coach did NOT make bags with woven C pattern fabrics in the US. C pattern fabric bags were only made overseas. The wording of the creed statement is also wrong for the month and year codes in the serial number.

The creed, serial number and lining for that style and color SHOULD look like this:

Another problem is that the creed describes a bag made of "completely natural glove tanned cowhide." Your bag is NOT a leather bag!

Authentic. The use of the I month code was done on several Beaumonts at this plant at the time.

I just found an answer to my query by finding Hyacinth’s post from Dec 2014. The 9795 is shown in the fall & Holiday catalogue in 1987. The Summer & Spring preview book shows the 9796 and refers to the added 3rd pocket which was not mentioned for the earlier 1975 version.
I must have seen only the 9796 version!

I believe the first run of spectator bags didn't have the front pocket. They changed the style number to 9796 once they added the pocket, probably early 1989.
