I'm away on vacation with limited computer time. I'm also on my iPhone and with the very small picture I'm seeing, I don't want to guess on my opinion. ID prefer to wait till I have access to full sized pictures on my computer.

Hello everyone! I have a little cutie I'm curious about. Picked her up yesterday at the GW and was so excited when I saw the lining. Can't find any Coach mark but it does have a big Union stamp on it. Could this be vintage Coach? Thanks!

Vintage Wallet
Approximately 4" wide x 3.5" tall.
Stamp inside reads "Pocketbook and Novelty Workers Union Local 1, NY"

I found a reference listed in the NYU library for the union which lists Coach as a primary subject and another that identifies 1937 as the date the union adopted that name. A third source, "Coach, Inc. History" on FundingUniverse says that all of the original employees of Coach in the 50's were members of this union. Ok enough of my historical research...

Those stripes and colors along with the leather make me think it's B.C. inspired. But that's only based on the few Cashin items I've actually owned.

Hello all. I would like to have a couple of bags authenticated. Thanks for your help!

Hello All

Am a newbie starting to collect Sonomas, and have a question regarding leather quality as one way to spot a fake. Been studying, and the Salearea Authentic Coach leather guide mentions that stretched "elephant skin" can often be on a fake. Not sure what that is? See two photos - black bag is a fake 4316, the cream is from an authentic 4919 (1995 from Costa Rica) is on inside of flap only.
Is this what you mean & does it indicate a less quality bag?

I understand that Creed and bag style are most important, but thought this info might help me to make informed purchases going forward.

Thanks for you patience & any insights!

The elephant skin that was described doesn't refer to the pebbled leather of Sonomas. It is something we see on fakes that use low quality leather.

Even on an authentic Sonoma you are going to see some variation in the size of the pebbles and some veins. But I think Coach's quality control would have tried to make sure that the best pieces of leather were used for the most important parts. On one of mine, the leather on the sides has smaller pebbles and there is a vein on the bottom. I've seen some bags, particularly on Hudsons, that seem to have more irregular leather than others.

I've never seen that union stamp on a Coach product. The lining definitely looks like Bonnie Cashin but I don't know if she was the exclusive user of it. I've seen vintage Coach wallets that are stamped "top grain cowhide" in gold but not "glove tanned cowhide" like yours. Are the hinges stamped with a B? Is there anything on the snap?

No, that's not what I meant by "elephant skin". Maybe "cellulite" would be a better description, but I'm talking about fine wrinkles that usually run parallel to each other, like the picture below. You won't find them in Sonoma leathers, only smooth leathers used in fakes. Some genuine Coaches can stretch like this in high-stress areas like the bottom corners, but the fakes can have this kind of overstretched damaged leather anywhere on the bag and in places where the leather never gets stressed or stretched.

Hey ladies I got this Alexandra off if Craig's list last week and I was pretty sure she is/was the real deal I just wanted to make sure. The leather in it is not as nice as sime of the older bags I have had, not that this is a new bag it anything, and the zippers don't run as smooth as I would expect.

So of course now I am doubting myself and my authenticating skills.

I'm so happy to hear that those pebbled variations on my Sonomas are OK.
I actually like the way they look, gives them character!

Thank you so much Whateve & Hyacinth, and also for the visual references.
Will add to my Coach reference collection.
