For further information, please refer to the first post on page 1 of this thread.

Please follow the following requests:
  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated by searching the seller ID and/or item number. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • Note that authenticators have the right to refuse any requests. This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:
  • FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller and site where listed
    Link:
    Comments:

  • FOR ITEMS NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Where purchased or how obtained
    Comments:
BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)

  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

There are some websites, sellers and item locations for which I prefer not to authenticate. There are various reasons, among them, the site or the sellers' refusal to do the right thing when it comes to counterfeit items. (And it is a volunteer authenticator's right not to authenticate any item for any reason if that's their desire.)

While I believe that some Goodwill online sites (supposedly) have statements affirming that they abide by federal trademark law and won't sell and will remove counterfeit items, other Goodwill sites imply a "caveat emptor" policy.

And as pointed out by @kithrobyn's experience in notifying a Goodwill listing of a fake (here), they were unwilling to admit that their "expert authenticators" know what they're doing.

Because the counterfeiters have been getting better in replicating their fakes, some styles are very well faked and swaggers are among them.

I do believe that the bag you won is okay but the pictures aren't as clear as they should be for such a well-faked style.

@BeenBurned Thank you for taking the time to explain. I saw your response this morning at work, but wanted to write something more than a just shallow thank you.

I would also like to apologize. I genuinely thought my post was missed or hidden, or a combination of the two, like my previous post. To say I am embarrassed is an understatement. In my short time here, I have seen how remarkably fast authenticators have been to respond to requests and I have yet to see a post ignored, so I assumed it was an issue with my account. I know you volunteer your time and completely understand your right to ignore a request. I have read responses to past requests, indicating that the authenticator prefers not to authenticate for X or Y, but I haven’t run across a request with no response at all. Had I known you, or any other authenticator, preferred not to answer because of experience with this location, I never would have considered this bag, much less post two requests.

Knowing this, it is even more gracious that you went ahead and looked at the bag anyway. I thought I would feel relief at seeing your opinion of the bag, but I just feel like an idiot. Since finding this site I have really enjoyed finding bags and combing through all the information, not only to see if they are authentic, but to generally learn more about Coach and vintage Coach. Its is becoming less of a pastime and more of an obsession. Everyone is so nice, knowledgable and willing to answer questions, it’s such an amazing resource, even for those who just want a quick answer. I don’t know why I didn’t take advantage of that, I should have taken more time to research the bag and left the authenticating to the experts.

I guess all I can really say is that I am thankful and grateful for all the time you and the other authenticators take to patiently answer all the questions and requests, even when the requester screws up and panics, it is genuinely appreciated.

Can someone look at this one for me? I think it is a Coach Copley.
Item: Coach Handbag
Listing number:
Seller: Akerwoman
Link: https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m87...gnpBb887llYVOGoUdtZjPzpeVZq87jjhoCcE8QAvD_BwE

Comments:

Since Mercari apparently doesn't allow non-members to view their photos, I can't help. I refuse to be forced to give personal info to a site just to see what they're selling. Someone else should be around soon to take a look.

It's fine.
That's weird. I'm not a member there but I can see the pictures.

So far, I don't see any obvious red flags but I'd like to see more pictures including the stamping on the bottom of the bag, a closeup of the handles, view from the top of open bag showing pockets and lining and a picture of the front rivets and hang tags.

There are close fakes of the 1941 bags.

Good morning. May I request to ask if this item is authentic. I could not find the code anywhere in the internet. This bag came from Canada. Thank you so much
Was it purchased online? Is there a listing from which it was purchased?

I

It was purchased on sale at a coach store in canada.. given as a gift but i could not seem to find the code in the internet
If it came from a Coach outlet store, there's little reason to doubt authenticity unless there are obvious problems that might indicate a dishonest buyer returned a fake.

In this case, I don't see obvious red flags but I've never seen the bag IRL and I'm not familiar with it.

Would you please post pictures of both sides of the made in tag from inside the bag?

If any other members own this bag, their comments and opinions are invited.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I appreciated BeenBurned's posting on why they choose not to authenticate from certain sites; I have been lucky so far in the bags I've found (in person) at Goodwill but haven't experimented with their online auctions, so I know now to be very cautious, especially based on other posters' experiences.

I also want to tell you not to feel like an idiot for not being able to tell whether the bag you were looking at was authentic or not. That's why we're all here -- to clarify our suspicions and/or allay our fears about the authenticity of our bags (desired or owned). I've been picking up what I believe to be vintage Coach bags at thrift stores for 15+ years, and was never 100% certain of their authenticity until I found this forum recently and the wonderful authenticators here have confirmed several of them. It truly does become an obsession, but I've definitely come across more counterfeit bags at thrift stores than genuine ones. Keep searching for your Coach holy grail!

There's no need to apologize nor to feel like an idiot.

I'll go further to clarify my feelings toward some sites, one of which is Goodwill.

With Goodwill, although all (I believe) are under the goodwill.com umbrella, different regions seem to have different attitudes toward the listing and sale of counterfeit items (although the law disallows them entirely).

Some Goodwill online listings have what amounts to authenticity disclaimers while others have a statement attesting that they comply with Goodwill's policy against the sale of fakes. Listings also state that if there are questions or concerns surrounding authenticity, to contact the seller.

My issue lies with the fact that in order to contact *the seller,* (Goodwill), whether to ask a question or to inform them of a counterfeit item in a listing, one needs to open an account with full name, shipping address, phone number, email address. These are REQUIRED items, even to ask a question! I should NOT have to disclose my full identity in order to ask questions. (I understand that should I buy, I would have to give my info but for questions? NFW!)

The following form is required to be filled in order to ask a simple question. Asterisked items are required. (Ebay, Bonz, Tradesy and even Poshmark (another unrecommended site) allow aliases and/or guest accounts.)

What do you mean?

I just searched for "coach leather 48629" and found at least a dozen links to various selling sites. I don't know whether or not some of them are trustworthy, but I don't know how you couldn't find any of them.

JUST AS A MATTER OF INFORMATION - When searching for a serial number on the internet, YOU SHOULD NEVER SEARCH FOR THE ENTIRE NUMBER SHOWN ON THE STAMP. Unless you're looking specifiaclly for a bag made in that exact plant, month and year the only numbers that should be searched for are the 4 or 5-digit style numbers, the second half of the serial number. The first half of the full serial number are internal production codes, and the "F" in front of a style number just means it was made for the Factory Stores. SEARCHING for the number in your bag, K1847-F48629 BRINGS UP ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Searching the CORRECT way for just the style number brings up a LOT more. Here's a simple Google search I ran using the correct terms:
https://www.google.com/search?q=coa...rhAhWEylkKHbu6A644FBDy0wMIigE&biw=839&bih=476
and an Ebay search for the style number:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=coach+48629&_sacat=11450

Speaking of which, bags made ONLY for the Factory Stores as indicated by the "F" in front of the style number will never show up on any Coach.com site. If that's what you were looking for you're wasting your time. As BeenBurned already said twice, if it was bought at a legitimate Coach store, why are you even looking for it?
